Ouch! I was there for the start of that bathtub run as a lad of thirteen. Grew up in Chemainus in the 60's and 70's. Miss those times.

My aunt and uncle took part in the bathtub races a time or two. The bathtub sat at my gran's house when they weren't using it. It had big wooden square skis on it, lol. I vaguely remember one year either my aunt was the first woman across, or she started the race and my uncle took the second heat, so she missed out on the title of first woman across. One or the other. Fun times.

Such a fun event to watch, so many sunk and never got out of Nanaimo. If they made it, often they had cramps and couldn't get up to ring the bell...

I miss the sea festival it was the premier event of the summer until we became no fun city ,amazing that Canada's population has doubled since this was shot, I can almost hear mouth and macneal on my dad's portable radio again.....

My parent's business entered a tub in 67 or 68, can't recall the exact years. Used a 6 HP Evinrude outboard engine.
