This is great - the question put to Ken around 1 hour 22 minutes in, that he said he didn't necessarily have a good answer for (relating to the theoretical framework the party has utilised to justify reform and opening up) - I suggest people seek out Roland Boers work, particularly his 2021 published book "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics", in which this question is answered thoroughly. Roland is a Dean of a Marxist University in China - the first Westerner to achieve this rank I understand - and he goes in to detail discussing sections within the manifesto that see the building of socialism requiring two key actions:
"The proletariat will use its political supremacy to (1.) wrest, by degree, all capital from the bourgeoisie, to centralise all instruments of production in the hands of the State, i.e., of the proletariat organised as the ruling class; and to (2.) increase the total productive forces as rapidly as possible.
The 2nd point is often left aside by many socialists when considering what is needed to build socialism, and that China initially (along with other Communist states) focused too heavily on the first of these requirements; but then made the switch to focus more on raising the total productive forces as rapidly as possible in the reform and opening up era, but at the expense of the first.
Ultimately, getting the balance on these two points is critical, and it could be suggested that as part of the 'New Era' discussed by Xi, that more of a balance has been achieved here; but in principle this is the theoretical framework.
Please checkout Roland's work as it provides wonderful insights from the Chinese perspective, not just Western interpretations.

Hey everyone! Today, I want to introduce you to Ken Hammond, an expert in Chinese history and politics. In this video, Ken will explain "Marxism with Chinese Characteristics," a unique concept that has played a significant role in China's political and economic system.
In recent years, China's rise as a global power has caught the attention of the world. However, China's political and economic system is not the same as that of the Western world. Marxism with Chinese Characteristics is a concept that seeks to adapt Marxist principles to fit the Chinese context.
In this video, Ken Hammond will take us through the history of Marxism in China and how it has evolved over time to become what it is today. He will explain the key features of Marxism with Chinese Characteristics and how it has shaped China's political and economic policies.
Ken's expertise in Chinese history and politics makes him the perfect person to explain this complex concept. So, whether you are a student of politics, economics or history, or just someone interested in understanding the Chinese system, this video is for you.
In conclusion, I highly recommend watching this video to gain a better understanding of "Marxism with Chinese Characteristics" and its impact on China's political and economic system. Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe for more informative content.

After watching and listening to Prof Hammond's short lecture on "socializing with Chinese characteristics", I have to admit I didn't get a very clear understanding of what this phrase is supposed to mean. Prof Hammond gives us a sort of theoretical outline of what it's supposed to mean, which he suggests also includes some contradictions, but his explanation lacks specificity and doesn't necessarily refute those critics who argue it means nothing. Xi Jinping has said China and its government are socialist, so whatever it does with its political economy is socialism with Chinese characteristics; the latter being a circular argument.

I would argue "socialism with Chinese characteristics" is equivalent to what Stalin called "socialism in one country" and what Hitler called "national socialism." China is a Leninist national socialist neoliberal democratic centralist meritocracy. Deng added the neoliberal part. Post-Deng added the meritocracy part. Xi has reasserted the Leninist national socialist part with democratic centralism i.e. one-party dictatorship.

@jason8434 equivalent to hitler's nsdap.... Americans are morally perverse. Relish that democracy and the lower life expectancy it's building for Americans. Congratulations.

Very interesting. Thank you! I'm not sure if I got this wrong, but I think one of your questioners asked how Chinese people conceive of democracy not what Americans think of it..

The way I look it is that liberal democracy is the marketisation of democracy itself. There are many things you don't want the market to be involved in.. healthcare, privacy, sex, housing and democracy.
By using democratic centralism you remove the ability for the rich to buy power therefore remove the market from democracy itself.
I think this is a simple way of explaining the concept.

IMO, it is part of the Chinese culture to obtain information and data (personal or otherwise) about each other ... parents like to know how their kids are doing, their marriage and their familial issues .. the relatives want to know how their nephews and nieces are getting on ... friends like to know more about each other ... etc.. thus, when the state needs information & data (personal or otherwise) for improving and planning a better way of life and a better society for the people, no one will feel that they are living "under surveillance"

@@jopeco2538 I hear a communist cheerleading for Chinese hyper-capitalism while calling it anti-imperialism. You literally can't make this stuff up.
Imagine raising millions of people out of poverty (AND) exponential increasing the class divide all in one fell swoop. This has to be the cruelest contradiction of the 21st century. Magical thinking on a unimaginable scale.
Capitalism is a key component of imperialism. You can't do capitalist expansion 'without' imperialism. There's so such thing as a equitable compassionate capitalism based on mutual cooperation.
To add insult to injury China advances Special Economic Zones (free trade zones) across the global south. A hyper-fascist creation that vastly benefits corporations over workers.
