In this video, you'll learn How To: Insert Pictures into Cells with the IMAGE Function in a Formula. Microsoft recently announced the rollout of the new IMAGE function. It enables us to write a formula that inserts an image directly into a cell. This opens up many new interesting possibilities.
We have been able to insert images into Excel worksheets for a long time. Historically, these images float above the grid in the drawing layer. Images have been independent of the grid. For many situations, this works great. However, when trying to incorporate pictures dynamically, this method was cumbersome.
Recently, Microsoft announced the availability of a new function, IMAGE. With it, we are able to write a formula that displays a picture in a cell. Since the path to the image is stored in the formula, we are able to easily change the image path and filename dynamically using the power of Excel formulas. Watch this video to find out how!

How can I display multiple images at once? For example, if vehicle no. 01 has 5 photos, I want to click once and be able to view all five photos in sequence.
can you please help me to sort this out? (without VBA)

Dear Jeff, Thank you for your informative videos. I have a particular case in excel in which I couldn’t find any solution to it and I hope you can help me with it. If I have various numbers in column B, and I need these numbers to be (increased/decreased):
    • By 0.5 either to make it 20.5 or 19.5
    • Or by 1 to make it either 21 or 19
    • Or 2 to make it 22 or 18 …etc.
    • The change should be based on two conditions, a selected text from a drop-down list in the next cell in column C in addition to a number I type in the cell next to them in column D, for example:
    • The first case scenario is: When I type the number 20 in cell B2 and then I choose the text “increase” from a drop-down list in cell C2 and then I type 0.5 in the cell D2, I want this “increase” to be reflected on B2 and make it 20.5
    • The second case scenario: When I type the number 15 in cell B3 and then I choose the text “decrease” from a drop-down list in cell C3 and then I type any number like 1, 2 or 3 in the cell D3, I want this “decrease” to be reflected on B3 and make it 14, 13 0r 12
    • The third case scenario: When I type number 10 in cell B4 and then I don’t choose any text from a drop-down list in cell C4 and leave it blank with cell D4, I don’t want any change to be reflected on B4 and leave it 10 as it is.
I hope you can find time to answer this very soon. Thanks again.

Thanks for this insightful video. I have tried the image function on file saved locally on the hard disk, but the image function doesn't work (#value). What can be the reason?

At this time, IMAGE supports https (web) files (not local files).
      Thanks

    Great tutorial Jeff.
I can't seem to get the mouse over working on my images. Did you have to enable something for this to occur?
I have been working with "IMAGE()" function and have few things to report.
    1) Images referred by a https URL are actually downloaded into the XLSX file (you will notice your file size bloat if you are referring to many photos like me at 500+ photos file size is 67MB")
    2) Once images load into the XLSX file you can actually save it wherever you want, share it with whoever and delete the images at HTTPS location as they are embedded into the XLSX file. The problem in emailing the file may be the file size if you have many photos embedded.
    3) It is incorrect perception that the "IMAGE()" function simply refers to images as hot links, this was NOT explained anywhere! Image link is simply used to bring/import the photo into XLSX.
    4) "IMAGE()" function can NOT be used for application of product catalogues where the image of the product may change. I have not been able to find any information how linked images can be reloaded/refreshed. This is a massive FAILURE BY DESIGN! Hopefully someone from MS reads this. I wasn't able to find MS support where I can bring this to their attention.
    5) Only images located on HTTPS:// address can be imported. Why is that MS? Why not from a local drive or HTTP:// locations? Is there a security concern or its simply a marketing tool?
    UPDATE:
Point No 4) above is no longer true as I have found a workaround for updating images.
If photo has been updated/edited/changed the process to update it in the XLSX is as follows:
    a) delete the contents of the cell where the updated photo is supposed to be
    b) SAVE the file (this will flush the old photo from the XLSX file)
    c) put back the "IMAGE()" code that you deleted in step a) above. This will re-fetch the new photo from the URL provided.
