    Ok, this video deserves a sub by itself. When I look at a UMX plane, the LAST thing that crosses my mind is "I should mod this". Oh-Heeeeeeck-no! They're so thin and fragile, surely I'd break the darn thing just considering swapping the FC and motor. So far, a Delta Ray has elected to do surgery with me, going from docile to SpaceX levels of performance, but... I mean... that's easy on something that big.
    Nice, Tim! Thanks for sharing this!

      GR: Just goofing around with this project, seeing if it would work. The plane is actually quite rugged, which is why I even attempted it. Does fly well now! Tim

    Mr M, I have been enjoying your Guillows videos and want thank you for all this helpful info.
    Do you show how to do the covering anywhere? A how to video showing the technique and tools would be awesome.

      CC: I have received several comments on a covering video. I will do this on my next Guillow conversion, out later this summer. Tim

    Esky (the original makers of the "Aeroscout" re-brands) now have what should be a much better-designed unit of this size out. (ESKY Mini EYAS II 750mm.) No doubt it'll turn up on Horizon Slobby some time soon but currently only Banggood and Aliexpress show it for sale. 😉

    Nice job, Tim. I am wondering if I could put a radio from a Sport Cub S into a Mini Aeroscout.

    Hi Tim outstanding video going way back to your F4 phantom problems I love a challenge, what about a Jed ski wing also I did some free flight scale models and we had to increase tail area by about 30% also I see you use a spectrum DX6 transmitter, have you ever had any problems with range and can you please let me know what receivers you use as I have a new DX6 transmitter and trust your honesty and skill and yes I always range test physically but I am scared to commit my DYNAM P61 to it. The wife keeps asking about your little dog. Regards Phil roos

      Phil: Thanks for checking in! I like Spektrum products a lot, I think they have their act together. I use the Spektrum AR620 6 channel receiver. Light and has an internal antenna, which is huge for all aircraft installations. Little doggie is Rudy, a Westie. Great to have Rudy around! Tim

    Great video. I have the areoscout with the same problem.
    Can you send me a list of parts you used. I didn't see what speed controller you used. I want to do the same thing a parts list would help.
    Thank you for doing this video.

      Ken: The description has a list of the various parts that I used for the upgrade. I used a 10 amp ESC that I had in the parts box, purchased earlier at www.StevensAero.com Tim

    I tried a similar upgrade using the motor and esc and 3-blade prop from a crashed ZOHD Drift. Also used a Turnigy receiver and the ZOHD esc and new 5 gram servos. I had plenty of control authority but the motor torque overwhelmed this plane. Any application of throttle put it into an immediate corkscrew dive. I used a two cell battery, 300mah. It's interesting that the plane flew just as poorly as the ZOHD, which had the same torque problem! Too much motor?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick: Great recap, thanks. Maybe experiment with a smaller two blade prop for torque. Tim

    Again, thanks for posting useful video.
    Quick question 4 ya that might help explain basics to me and others. I'm still new to scratch building and like doing it a lot.
    How do I know what battery sizes will work with my electronics/ receiver.
    example, I have a larger Aeroscout- If I didn't care about flight time what could be the smallest battery I could use if I wanted to build a scratch build using exact ar631, servos and esc but in a smaller scratch build.
    I see IC5, IC3, IC2 battery connectors- I see PH type of battery connectors and JST as well.
    Do they sell adaptors or connectors that will allow say a JST battery connected to connect to my spektrum ar631 receiver?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael: I am on travel, short update. Check the technical specs for your motor and ESC. You’ll get an idea of best cell count and battery size. You can solder adapters together. You may be able to Google a wire connector “spider” with a bunch of connectors. Spektrum has their own special smart connector, I like XT-60 connectors a lot ( Amazon). Tim

    You mentioned the brushed motor burned up. How many cells were you running? It looked like you might have been using a 2 cell pack. Isn't the stock battery a 1 cell?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it was a 2 cell, but good point. Tim

      I only noticed because I'm in the process of doing a similar conversion for a friend of mine. Was having trouble trying to find a brushed ESC for 1-cell, but now realize it would be better just to switch to a 2-cell brushless setup. :)

    very well done. Do you think that rather than changing the servos, that a relative corresponding increase of control surface might work too?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert: Very good point. Larger control surfaces could do the trick. Tim

    Hi I'm a newbie and would like you to do a show showing and explaning how to trim an airplane once it's in the air. The problem I'm having is do I trim the rudder or do I trim the ailerons. Please help!

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leonard: That is a great idea, will add to video cue! Trim the ailerons first to get wings level flight, then the rudder. Tim

    Tim, how do you shrink the shrink tubing, on those control rods, down inside a foam fuselage? If you don't mind me asking.

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David: No the optimum approach. But I take the wing off, and shield the underlying fuselage foam with card stock, and carefully apply the heat with a heat gun. A dab of epoxy when done as well. Tim

    Hi, any plan to upgrade your square plane using lighweight flexible solar panel. I think using solar panel + battery should be used for ultra long range flight

    • @TimMcKay56

      Santo: I'll keep things a bit simpler and just swap out batteries between flights. 😁 Tim

    I have done the same upgrade to my mini aeroscout but I think mine might be over powered if there's such a thing. My question is what size battery are you using? And I installed ailerons.

    Im attempting the same conversion, which motor and ESC did you pick?

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZB: I used a Park 250 motor (www.StevensAero.com) and a 10 amp ESC I had in the parts bin. Tim

    • @zanderbrandt1730
      @zanderbrandt1730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TimMcKay56 Thanks Tim. I finished my conversion as well. Still leaves a lot to be desired, so ailerons are next on the list. I actually had some binding on the elevator hinge after adjustment. The threaded servo horn connector can get stuck on the edge of the rear landing gear bracket at certain lengths, something to watch out for.

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZB: Yes, RTF should have been better. Best of luck with ailerons! Tim

    the problem with this model is that the wings are too flippy, they have no support, so when you turn, one wing bends further than it should causing instability. this is a very poorly designed aircraft, if you wish to modify it, one should add wing struts to prevent the wings from flopping all over. hope this helps someone out there

      MB: Good points, thanks! Tim

    • @BLINKY3290
      @BLINKY3290 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the same, added a small wood shaft along the whole wing. It improved somewhat but turning and stability wasn't the issue for me.. it was the lack of power/thrust.. unless you find an environment where theres 0 wind it does great. But the slightest wind or wind gust definitely throws it off..

    • @BLINKY3290
      @BLINKY3290 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It stalls easily. So unless you find a day where theres no wind at all, you'll have issues keeping it in the air.. if you're able to keep it high, you have more control but with the slightest wind, its almost impossible to get it up high, and that's due to the lack of power.. being lightweight has its benefits but its underpowered. Good luck finding a spot with 0 wind.. if you're able to fly it with wind around, you got my respects.. only time that it was able to fly right was going with the wind, once u turn and go against it, ohhh its over.
