I think Pokemon Arceus is not without it's flaws, but the loop is great and satisfying. I enjoy taking on missions and in between going out into the world and checking off tasks to complete the entry of pokemon in the wild/in my party. It's the most fun I have had with a pokemon game in a long time and I genuinely hope they continue this franchise as well as implement things from this into the core games.
Janet is 100% right about the Arceus graphics. Anyone expecting a Switch game to magically look much better than Arceus is crazy. Everyone expects games to look better as as a console's lifecycle goes on, but they were already getting everything they possibly could out of the Switch right at launch.
As somebody who has their Switch hooked up to an LG OLED TV, I 100% agree on that take about graphics. Putting that hardware on a really nice TV basically exposes that every game on the Switch looks sub-par, no matter what Nintendo tries in terms of art direction. Hell, BOTW which is held up as the holy grail, looks very average when blown up on a big screen.
Arceus is easily the best Pokemon game ever from a gameplay/gamedesign loop. The graphics are undercooked and so are the cutscenes/lack of dialogue. yup, HG/SS is the best pokemon but this is the best game since that game. I just think that pokemon isnt for tim anymore and thats ok. Me too! They finally tried something different and, as far as I heard, a lot of people share Tim's thoughts. Hope this game does good, but I guess nostalgia makes people want the same thing over and over :(
ya 100% its the best pokemon for me since heart gold soul silver and may be my 2nd favorite but easily hits 3rd of all time. it takes it in exactly the direction i want pokemon to go. is it ugly? yes very ugly with everything with exception of the pokemon and character models.
Regarding Pokemon Legends: Firstly, Rowlet all the way! Secondly, stick with it, it really does open up and become more nuanced after the first big thing you do and all the hand holding stops, especially when you're going after higher level/Alpha Pokemon etc.
I'm not surprised at all that the choices have really no BIG impacts. Every game saying that never have true impacts. Overall, the game seems so fun, can't wait!

It’s a much more interesting discussion. Also having a moderator to ask questions like Tim was doing for those that haven’t played the games is a welcome idea as well.
80 minutes in and I hear Barrett nail exactly how I feel about Pokemon so far. It keeps putting me to sleep lol, I'm forcing myself to play it on the tv so I can last more than 20 minutes. Great episode to kick off review season!
This Pokémon game is so special! It has more character than pretty much any that I’ve played before, and I have been there since Red and Blue. Interesting cutscenes, great character moments, (more) realistic, grounded dialogue, FUNNY FACIAL EXPRESSIONS! The gameplay loop is addicting after you get through the admittedly tedious tutorial. Yes the graphics aren’t great, but the Pokémon animations are fantastic, and there are always exciting things to discover.

Good review. As much as I would like to play this I'm more interested in Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West ,SIfu and Destiny Witch Queen so I will probably wait to play this at a later date.
I'm listening to this podcast while playing Pokémon Legends. I'm 58 hours in and it's my favorite Pokémon game so far. I'm 34 years old and fell off the franchise for years, but this has been great.
Black 2 / White 2 was the last time I was seriously impressed by a pokemon game, in any capacity. Refined experienced (w/ minimal gimmicks), expansive postgame, and excellent pixel art. Graphics have been awful ever since they transitioned into 3D with X/Y on the 3DS. Enjoying Legends Arceus, just hope GameFreak can employ some more help and get an extended dev cycle for the next mainline games. I think combining some aspects of Legends with some from SwSh they could land on something special.
I'm def interested in this game but may hold off until later in the year to circle back. Elden Ring, Sifu and Horizon are taking priority this month. Love to the KF best friends.
Dang, Janet was the star of the show today, really great job explaining all of her thoughts. I have never thought about why choices between trust person A or B and why its annoying, but she explained that in a way that made so many things click for me.
Kudos to Mike for providing clear easy to understand examples of his criticisms of the game. I got burned by buying the first Dying Light on release and while I was able to finish it, every other story trophy was not popping for me among other bugs. You would think after working on this game for over half a decade it would be polished, but it seems the dev still has no problems launching an unfinished product. Also kudos to Tim for asking Greg to clarify his statement on the story. When Greg said the story was like Pootchie (sp?) dying on his way to visit his family in space, (or some such nonsense) I was sitting here going "wtf is he talking about?"

I think the Dying Light 2 review was one of the best reviews the group has done. Flowed really nicely. Greg and Tim did a good job of throwing the conversation around and dialing in on interesting facets of the game or conversation. Everyone had great passionate points and Tim contributed a lot despite not playing.
Now I don’t feel weird about falling asleep playing Arceus. I don’t know what kind of visual hypnosis is going on, but I literally get drowsy after about 30 minutes. It has nothing to do with my enjoyment, but I just can’t keep my eyes open!!!
Not surprised to hear Tim say that a big reason he couldn’t enjoy Arceus was because of the visuals, he’s the guy who said that Luigi’s Mansion 3 was an ugly game which just absolutely insane. Yeah for sure Arceus doesn’t look good at all and has a weak art style but visuals should never take away from game as long as the gameplay is fun.
Fun fact: The Pokemon series does have an overarching narrative that started around X and Y that revolves around there being multiple dimensions to try and explain the absence of mega evolution in the previous games. We've been following the adventures of our unfortunate dimension hopping detective Looker as he's been pulled from world to world trying to put the pieces together. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode post game goes real heavy on explaining some of this stuff, and it's continued in Sun and Moon. It's mostly post-game content or hidden away references, sort of like Dark Souls lore at times, so I can see how people can miss it, but the narrative is there. Was strangely missing in Sword and Shield and I'm not sure what that means honestly. My theory is that it's another alternate world where Dynamax exists intstead of Mega Evolution, since Megas aren't even referenced by NPCs in that game. No major spoilers but uhh... Legends Arceus? Might be more of that story to be found. World hopping is sort of the name of the game. Sneasler's Warden is an interesting guy, I'll say that. Someone you'll be familiar with if you played the most initially reviled, now revered games in the series. Got those piercing eyes. Interesting fashion choices. Particularly in regards to his wrist. That's a new addition. And he's not the only one. When you know what to look for, all the wardens have them. The DLC for this game could be cool as hell. Just saying.
Chris Avellone's writing having to be ditched must've have a big effect on the story so late into the process. Havn't finished the ep yet so not sure if anyone brought that up.
Yall should make a show just for spoilercasts on video games, I enjoy the reviews but I wish for some games you guys would do a massive deep dive on your thoughts on story spoilers etc
Pokémon Legends Arceus for me is in the Top 5 Pokemon games ever. I have logged 45 hours in it since launch and I'm still nowhere close to being bored with it. Also, great job Barrett! You've been really enhancing the presentation of every show you're connected to. ❤️
Tim really is the problem with the fan base! But i totally understand his complaints. To me a perfect pokemon game would be taking the traditional gym battles and putting that into Arceus legends open world aspect where you can go wherever you want but lock you in certains regions eith certain gyms until you progress in the story while having a side plot and stories meeting other trainers like the tv show/anime.
That is what I really want, and arceus seems like it's them testing to see if they can actually pull something like that off and if people would like it. I'll be disappointed if they don't make the next game with arceus in mind
The Dying Light 2 gameplay shown was really "meh". It's obvious that Mike wasn't into the game because it looked like someone was playing it for the first time despite having late-game gear. Overall, great overview of the game! I've been playing mostly co-op and we have been loving the game. We haven't gotten to the final mission yet, but are likely going to play again via newgame+ on the highest difficulty.
I feel like they should try to get midway through the second region to see if their feelings change. The intensity goes up s decent amount. My only complaint though is that I do miss battling trainers but at the same time I've almost been clapped by wild ones so this game might have actually been difficult with trainer battles
dying light 2 has been one of my most anticipated games for years now. shame to hear that its riddled with bugs... im very surprised to hear that they scoped back on gameplay mechanics/systems we previously saw in gameplay demos...
I haven't played a Pokémon game since Red/Blue on Gameboy Color. I am so surprised how much fun I am having with Legends Arceus after hearing you guys. I feel like it plays like a natural transition from the old games to a more modern rpg type experience.
I agree, its the best game for me since HG/SS. it's only major flaws in my eyes are that the environments are ugly as hell and this type of game desperately needed voice acting.
@@elimanatorthe story would feel more engaging with voice acting for sure. The graphics are barely mediocre especially after titles like Breathe of the Wild and Monster Hunter Rise. But graphics are something I can look past, gameplay on the other hand I cant, and I love the gameplay of LA.

I bet tons of reviewers went in with negative vibes. Trying to rush through for embargo or to play something else. The weird hate that "zombie" games get, when soldiers or aliens is no big deal.
These type of games always have a weird review cycle. They only have so much time to play/write a review so our experience will be extremely different and we'll be able to wander off and do side quests for days without stressing about it. I loved the first one so I'm sure I will be heavily invested here.
It's very dead island mixed with Dying Light. The Dark hollows, forgotten stores etc are great. The story is good and the side quest most of the time are great. The world building is the best they've ever had.
Them saying they hated the ending of Dying Light 2 has me bummed man. And wondering if the ending is similair to that of the first games expansion The Following, where SPOILERS....... no matter what choice you make your character is done. I was so stoked for this game. Even preordered it (thats on me), but hearing the ending sucks makes me less excited for the journey. Also had no idea this games protagonist was infected until blessing said something
Loved this episode. As someone who is terrified of zombies and wont play this game because of it it's nice to hear a breakdown from the crew! Also the unique intros at KF are one of my favorite things so im excited to see that on Gamecast moving foward!
Sometimes I'm like, man, I missed out, I never had a Nintendo growing up, never played pokemon, zelda, mario. Always had other consoles. Finally got a switch and was like, yeah, I'm going to play all the games everyone says are the best games ever. Can't wait. I've been consistently disappointed by Nintendo games, and I think its because they genuinely trade on nostalgia first. So, rather than being sad or mad about it, I'm kind of weirdly relieved that I don't "have to play" the new games, I no longer just expect them to be good, and when one has mixed reviews it makes it so easy to skip.
Yeah I feel like they need to give it more time. A couple hours is no where near enough to get into everything this game has to offer. Definitely ugly tho.
Nice intro Barret, y'all got a solid crew throughout the entire production, keep on doing y'all's thing. I loved coming back to kinda funny and seeing new faces that don't take anything away from the core. The brand has grown and with more people the quality and content are all better than ever. re: Pokemon, Man you guys are just old lol. Starters are disappointing because you just want the OGs. Mike says water starters are disappointing since squirtle, and everyone responds ONLY w totodile lmfao. Mudkip went viral as a Pokemon, the people love him, and piplup is literally a penguin he's fuckin awesome. Even samurott and greninja go hard. The only seriously disappointing one is sobble, bc his design is awful (even tho his shiny is fantastic). I'm really glad Tim was so introspective over his opinions on the game lol. There are criticisms to be discussed with this game, graphics ofc, but also storage and management, writing, battle mechanics, side quest structure. But at the same time there's also so much new and good. When we can remove the "it's not gen 1/2 enough" from the discussion we can separate the people who are just not into Pokemon anymore (which is fine) from the ones with meaningful opinions about what is actually there. Thank god for Janet in this discussion, but I am hopeful and looking forward to where the conversations around this game go.
This is a perfect example of why I don’t want a Nintendo podcast from Tim - he’s part of the “toxic fan base” as he put it, whereas I vibe 100% more with the opinions from Janet and Gregg when it comes to the new Pokemon because I’m not jaded from 25 years of playing the old games
So much of the dying light 2 talk reminded me of the original days gone talk, but yet no one felt the same about this as that, and I don't get why. But I guess I'll have to play it myself, someday when there aren't better options now and coming for me.
I put 40 hours into Pokemon so far. 8 Pokemon to go on having caught every Pokemon. I really enjoy this game but it's far from perfect. It's probably the most I have enjoyed a Pokemon in a while. It has bad writing and some of the larger encounters kinda suck to play. The graphics inside of caves are really god awful. Like there is no reason for you to be able to see your characters collision/hit box as you are walking. There are just moments where you can see the seams coming apart and that really brings down a lot of moments.
Dying light 2 will be a sale game for me that I really look forward to. Elden ring and forbidden west take precedence for me rn. And I’ll play legends when I get a switch again which I just keep putting off and putting off
I'm surprised that Tim doesn't like Arceus and the specific reasons he doesn't like it. As someone who has been complaining about how similar and boring all previous pokemon games are I absolutely love Arceus and it obviously seems to be addressing a lot of the criticism head on. I don't think this feels like "kids first rpg" this feels like a completely new take on pokemon and, in many ways, like no other game I've played. The reason people have been complaining about past pokemon games being samey and made for children is because, despite the fact that they *are* games for kids, they don't have to be. This isn't a concept that is only interesting to children and I think Arceus is the first game that actually achieves that.
To comment on Pokémon, I have felt the BOTW experience of exploring and discovering and finding new Pokémon, and having that thing of seeing something, going there and being rewarded with an alpha or items or rare spawns. Bummer that Tim isn’t enjoying the experience

Sun/Moon was the last Pokemon game I really enjoyed. I'm loving Arceus, but it's a game for those who like catching Pokemon more than battling. The tutorial is too long. But once I got past it, I fell in love with exploring every inch of the map and getting excited every time I found a new Pokemon
i feel like everyone is looking at Arceus in a glass half empty sort of way where as greg is looking at it as a half full way. i cant get enough of this game, im still in the 2nd map rank 6. I dont want to go back to the mainline pokemon games, I want this to be the mainline game & instead of learning from this and bringing it to the mainline games, I want it vice versa.
Tim, its not toxic so long as you're not attacking people or harassing people for liking things. However, holding a product accountable given the revenue pokemon pulls in is a valid point.The " its a kids game" isnt a valid argument; is it an excuse to half ass things, cut corners, rinse and repeat the same product over and over. The pokemon games can be a fantastic RPG, and they could contiue to iterate and improve, but they pull in billions without having to strive for excellence. Calling out a bad or lazy decision for something you enjoy is critism and fully valid.
I’m with mike I play inverted in all first person games so there’s an issue. Idk overall I think I’ll just get dying light following dlc because I’ve already 100% dying light cover the course of 2 playthroughs
Gotta say I have to politely disagree with the gamecasts opion on Pokemon Legends. I'm old enough that I have played every pokemon game as they released with the exception of Diamond and Pearl ( I was going through an "I'm to old for Pokemon" phase) and I gotta say this the best Pokemon game for me personally since HG/SS. HG/SS will always be the GOAT for me but this game really took the franchise in the direction I have been hoping it would go for the longest. Are the environments ugly ass hell? yes. Should a game of this style have voice acting? yes. but the game-play is exactly what I would want out of a modern take of Pokemon and its finally recaptured some of that magic for me.

Honestly, the gameplay loop is very tedious. Catching the same pokemon over and over and over again gets boring

Not surprised to hear Tim say that a big reason he couldn’t enjoy Arceus was because of the visuals, he’s the guy who said that Luigi’s Mansion 3 was an ugly game which just absolutely insane.
Yeah for sure Arceus doesn’t look good at all and has a weak art style but visuals should never take away from game as long as the gameplay is fun.
Fun fact: The Pokemon series does have an overarching narrative that started around X and Y that revolves around there being multiple dimensions to try and explain the absence of mega evolution in the previous games. We've been following the adventures of our unfortunate dimension hopping detective Looker as he's been pulled from world to world trying to put the pieces together. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode post game goes real heavy on explaining some of this stuff, and it's continued in Sun and Moon. It's mostly post-game content or hidden away references, sort of like Dark Souls lore at times, so I can see how people can miss it, but the narrative is there. Was strangely missing in Sword and Shield and I'm not sure what that means honestly. My theory is that it's another alternate world where Dynamax exists intstead of Mega Evolution, since Megas aren't even referenced by NPCs in that game.
No major spoilers but uhh... Legends Arceus? Might be more of that story to be found. World hopping is sort of the name of the game. Sneasler's Warden is an interesting guy, I'll say that. Someone you'll be familiar with if you played the most initially reviled, now revered games in the series. Got those piercing eyes. Interesting fashion choices. Particularly in regards to his wrist. That's a new addition. And he's not the only one. When you know what to look for, all the wardens have them.
The DLC for this game could be cool as hell. Just saying.
Chris Avellone's writing having to be ditched must've have a big effect on the story so late into the process. Havn't finished the ep yet so not sure if anyone brought that up.
I wonder if people will mention this aspect. Allegations aside, he was involved in the process and it likely affected the end product after he left

I'm with Greg on pokemon, giving us a checklist made this game a must play for me.
Pokémon Legends Arceus for me is in the Top 5 Pokemon games ever. I have logged 45 hours in it since launch and I'm still nowhere close to being bored with it.

Tim really is the problem with the fan base! But i totally understand his complaints. To me a perfect pokemon game would be taking the traditional gym battles and putting that into Arceus legends open world aspect where you can go wherever you want but lock you in certains regions eith certain gyms until you progress in the story while having a side plot and stories meeting other trainers like the tv show/anime.
That is what I really want, and arceus seems like it's them testing to see if they can actually pull something like that off and if people would like it. I'll be disappointed if they don't make the next game with arceus in mind

The Dying Light 2 gameplay shown was really "meh". It's obvious that Mike wasn't into the game because it looked like someone was playing it for the first time despite having late-game gear.
Overall, great overview of the game! I've been playing mostly co-op and we have been loving the game. We haven't gotten to the final mission yet, but are likely going to play again via newgame+ on the highest difficulty.

I feel like they should try to get midway through the second region to see if their feelings change. The intensity goes up s decent amount. My only complaint though is that I do miss battling trainers but at the same time I've almost been clapped by wild ones so this game might have actually been difficult with trainer battles

I haven't played a Pokémon game since Red/Blue on Gameboy Color. I am so surprised how much fun I am having with Legends Arceus after hearing you guys. I feel like it plays like a natural transition from the old games to a more modern rpg type experience.
I agree, its the best game for me since HG/SS. it's only major flaws in my eyes are that the environments are ugly as hell and this type of game desperately needed voice acting.
@@elimanatorthe story would feel more engaging with voice acting for sure. The graphics are barely mediocre especially after titles like Breathe of the Wild and Monster Hunter Rise. But graphics are something I can look past, gameplay on the other hand I cant, and I love the gameplay of LA.

I bet tons of reviewers went in with negative vibes. Trying to rush through for embargo or to play something else. The weird hate that "zombie" games get, when soldiers or aliens is no big deal.
These type of games always have a weird review cycle. They only have so much time to play/write a review so our experience will be extremely different and we'll be able to wander off and do side quests for days without stressing about it. I loved the first one so I'm sure I will be heavily invested here.
It's very dead island mixed with Dying Light. The Dark hollows, forgotten stores etc are great. The story is good and the side quest most of the time are great. The world building is the best they've ever had.
Them saying they hated the ending of Dying Light 2 has me bummed man. And wondering if the ending is similair to that of the first games expansion The Following, where SPOILERS....... no matter what choice you make your character is done. I was so stoked for this game. Even preordered it (thats on me), but hearing the ending sucks makes me less excited for the journey. Also had no idea this games protagonist was infected until blessing said something
Loved this episode. As someone who is terrified of zombies and wont play this game because of it it's nice to hear a breakdown from the crew! Also the unique intros at KF are one of my favorite things so im excited to see that on Gamecast moving foward!

Sometimes I'm like, man, I missed out, I never had a Nintendo growing up, never played pokemon, zelda, mario. Always had other consoles. Finally got a switch and was like, yeah, I'm going to play all the games everyone says are the best games ever. Can't wait. I've been consistently disappointed by Nintendo games, and I think its because they genuinely trade on nostalgia first. So, rather than being sad or mad about it, I'm kind of weirdly relieved that I don't "have to play" the new games, I no longer just expect them to be good, and when one has mixed reviews it makes it so easy to skip.
I recommend getting a PS5 then.

I loved coming back to kinda funny and seeing new faces that don't take anything away from the core. The brand has grown and with more people the quality and content are all better than ever. re: Pokemon, Man you guys are just old lol. Starters are disappointing because you just want the OGs. Mike says water starters are disappointing since squirtle, and everyone responds ONLY w totodile lmfao. Mudkip went viral as a Pokemon, the people love him, and piplup is literally a penguin he's fuckin awesome. Even samurott and greninja go hard. The only seriously disappointing one is sobble, bc his design is awful (even tho his shiny is fantastic).
I'm really glad Tim was so introspective over his opinions on the game lol. There are criticisms to be discussed with this game, graphics ofc, but also storage and management, writing, battle mechanics, side quest structure. But at the same time there's also so much new and good. When we can remove the "it's not gen 1/2 enough" from the discussion we can separate the people who are just not into Pokemon anymore (which is fine) from the ones with meaningful opinions about what is actually there. Thank god for Janet in this discussion, but I am hopeful and looking forward to where the conversations around this game go.
This is a perfect example of why I don’t want a Nintendo podcast from Tim - he’s part of the “toxic fan base” as he put it, whereas I vibe 100% more with the opinions from Janet and Gregg when it comes to the new Pokemon because I’m not jaded from 25 years of playing the old games

So much of the dying light 2 talk reminded me of the original days gone talk, but yet no one felt the same about this as that, and I don't get why. But I guess I'll have to play it myself, someday when there aren't better options now and coming for me.

I put 40 hours into Pokemon so far. 8 Pokemon to go on having caught every Pokemon. I really enjoy this game but it's far from perfect. It's probably the most I have enjoyed a Pokemon in a while. It has bad writing and some of the larger encounters kinda suck to play. The graphics inside of caves are really god awful. Like there is no reason for you to be able to see your characters collision/hit box as you are walking. There are just moments where you can see the seams coming apart and that really brings down a lot of moments.
Dying light 2 will be a sale game for me that I really look forward to. Elden ring and forbidden west take precedence for me rn. And I’ll play legends when I get a switch again which I just keep putting off and putting off
I'm surprised that Tim doesn't like Arceus and the specific reasons he doesn't like it. As someone who has been complaining about how similar and boring all previous pokemon games are I absolutely love Arceus and it obviously seems to be addressing a lot of the criticism head on. I don't think this feels like "kids first rpg" this feels like a completely new take on pokemon and, in many ways, like no other game I've played.
The reason people have been complaining about past pokemon games being samey and made for children is because, despite the fact that they *are* games for kids, they don't have to be. This isn't a concept that is only interesting to children and I think Arceus is the first game that actually achieves that.
To comment on Pokémon, I have felt the BOTW experience of exploring and discovering and finding new Pokémon, and having that thing of seeing something, going there and being rewarded with an alpha or items or rare spawns. Bummer that Tim isn’t enjoying the experience

Sun/Moon was the last Pokemon game I really enjoyed. I'm loving Arceus, but it's a game for those who like catching Pokemon more than battling.
The tutorial is too long. But once I got past it, I fell in love with exploring every inch of the map and getting excited every time I found a new Pokemon

I dont want to go back to the mainline pokemon games, I want this to be the mainline game & instead of learning from this and bringing it to the mainline games, I want it vice versa.

Tim, its not toxic so long as you're not attacking people or harassing people for liking things. However, holding a product accountable given the revenue pokemon pulls in is a valid point.The " its a kids game" isnt a valid argument; is it an excuse to half ass things, cut corners, rinse and repeat the same product over and over. The pokemon games can be a fantastic RPG, and they could contiue to iterate and improve, but they pull in billions without having to strive for excellence. Calling out a bad or lazy decision for something you enjoy is critism and fully valid.
I’m with mike I play inverted in all first person games so there’s an issue. Idk overall I think I’ll just get dying light following dlc because I’ve already 100% dying light cover the course of 2 playthroughs

Honestly this sounds like a good game where it gets better if they fix the bugs at end. I might pick this up after elden ring, horizon and destiny.
Gotta say I have to politely disagree with the gamecasts opion on Pokemon Legends. I'm old enough that I have played every pokemon game as they released with the exception of Diamond and Pearl ( I was going through an "I'm to old for Pokemon" phase) and I gotta say this the best Pokemon game for me personally since HG/SS. HG/SS will always be the GOAT for me but this game really took the franchise in the direction I have been hoping it would go for the longest.
Are the environments ugly ass hell? yes. Should a game of this style have voice acting? yes. but the game-play is exactly what I would want out of a modern take of Pokemon and its finally recaptured some of that magic for me.
I'm 37 hours into Pokemon and loving the hell out of it.
