      @irisgonzalez5028 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Yes that's one way of doing it, pencil colors certainly do take alot of time T.T I tend to use the burnishing technique through most of drawings which usually means pressing down hard on the pencil, but I do cause I dont like the texture of the paper XD

@@hanjun1828 If you want texture then paying
attention to the direction your drawing in
certainly helps as well. Texture in color pencils is really just a mix of paper, preasure and direction if that makes sense. It does depend somewhat of the pencils your using as well, but i would worry about those other points first.

The way you treated this piece still reminds me very much of your painting technique, which I guess makes sense. I'm just surprised considering how different the mediums are! If anyone is curious about beginning colored pencil art I’d recommend the 36 pack of the prismacolor premier. It has a really nice variety of warm and cool tones and is less intimating when selecting a color palette. Be sure to also at least have a small metal hand sharpener if you can’t find a hand crank sharpener.

" can you mix colored pencils with your finger like graphite?" A) you can use a paper towel (that's dry, obv) to slightly mix, if I'm remembering correctly- but only with wax heavy colored pencils. You will, however, want to use paper town to "lift" up some of the extra shine (wax) to keep mixing the pigments easily. B ) Different Prisma color pencil types have different wax consistency, i.e, making blending easier or not i.e x2 the more pigmented ones tend to have more wax because it can glide more easily onto the paper (most your pencils are of the lighter wax variety- the Prisma's with sharp sides have less wax in them, the round ones are waxier!) C ) I was taught, when learning colored pencils, to draw with them in tight circles (for my BFA illustration classes), this allows a smooth application of the pigmented wax and for easier blending with other pigments. In the end, it looks like a painting (of sorts) because the pigments are perfectly blended (which isn't really your style, but, alas!). When using them like this it is more like mixing pigments, add white to wash out an area, blend colored pencils ontop of one another for a new pigment, etc- sorta like paint (: But always remember, you can always go darker, but you can't bring back a pure white! Always start with your darks. I love your style and approach to pencils- prettier and leaves more to the imagination, looks so effortless. These are just some tips I had to pay over 50K for at an art school for, Maybe they'll benefit someone just starting with Prisma colored pencils.

You should definitely do more of these, perhaps starting with a faint watercolor under painting to model shapes, color temperatures. It might make feeling your way through the drawing go faster so that the sensation of slogging through the beginning phases doesn’t feel so tortuous. Chris, I absolutely love how you resolved all the issues presented by the lack of information in the reference photo, and ended up with a drawing glowing with color and life. When you said, “I don’t hate it.”, I had to chuckle. It’s so typical of you, an artist brimming with innate abilities and instincts, to hand wring and second guess right to the end. But you just keep getting better and better. I’m often so astonished by your work, and spend several minutes caressing it with eyes of admiration.

This was such a great video and so fun to watch! I’ve used colored penciled a lot throughout art school and beyond, it’s one of my favorite mediums, especially used on top of watercolor.
When you were talking about not being able to see yourself using them for a finished illustration because of the scratchy texture, a couple things came to mind that I thought might be helpful:
I sharpen my pencils a LOT to keep the tips really pointed so I can do light even “washes” of color. Once they get dull it starts skipping across the paper texture more and you get that scratchy feel (which can be cool looking if that’s what you’re intending).
I also use smoother textured surfaces to work on, like hot press watercolor paper, Bristol board, and when I was in school the standard class requirement was Strathmore 100% cotton rag illustration board (super thick and versatile surface for almost any medium).
Love watching you experiment and have fun making art! This came out absolutely gorgeous. 😊

I guess that I don´t only speak for myself if I say that doing art is a therapy in itself and is calling for some sort of meditation, so I must admit, although I don´t want to be rude, it´s extremely refreshing and agreable to watch you solely focus on your project as you go along. I´ve stopped so many tutorial videos because the artists were complaining too much about whatever problems they had in their life to the point that it was uncomfortable to keep on watching... I personally practice art or watch art videos to empty my mind from all my problems, so I don´t I don´t want to hear about someone else´s, sorry! I hope this didn´t come out too agressive or rude towards other artists, my point is simply, thank you for not doing that! Wow, that's great. I recently painted this girl with pencils too. Red hair and bright blue eyes always inspire me.

I really love how you color redheads, it’s very hard to get right. My boyfriend has red hair so it always makes me smile. Also looking at your work it’s very obvious you have extensive knowledge of color theory, you always pick unusual colors like green and purple that make your faces look stunning. Watching your videos is a great learning experience, thank you for sharing your process!

Young lady that was very satisfying I love that you used a lot of colors in her skin and hair. My work has been going to the realistic side and this was wow I loved it. I am going to start doing that and getting away from realistic colors. I loved your speaking and music. All in all this was relaxing and super satisfying. Kudos to you. Also your too young to be stressed Oh hell this was 4 years ago I hope your over whatever you were stressed about. Merry Christmas.

Heya Chris! Ahhhh I love your work so so so much! Seeing your style translated in coloured pencils is such a treat - I hope you feel like making more coloured pencil pieces in the future :D I totally relate to wanting time to pause though - I wish for that on a daily basis aha.
Btw, I‘m a SuriNoel fan too! definitely one of my fave cute channels, all their adorable personalities are so fun to watch and the storytelling is so sweet. While I’m working though I actually binge-watch a lot of horror let’s-players videos (SuperGreatFriend, CJUGames, John Wolfe), sometimes mixed in with other random topics in my recommends (mostly game lets-plays overall though). Recently I’ve also started going through some of Polygon’s gaming stuff and that’s been fun.

The reason why I don’t use colour pencils often is that it takes forever to layer them! I’ll be old and grey before I’m finished with one drawing if I were to use only colour pencils. The main way I use them is to layer on top of water colour or toned paper. Makes it all a lot faster!

  • @treasurespastnpresen

Prismacolour Premier are one of the softest pencils. My favorite. They blend very well. They are high wax based though so you can get a wax bloom but there are ways to avoid/fix that. Oil based pencils are harder but build up easily in more layers without wax bloom but are much harder pencil cores and take more pressure.
Have you tried pastel pencils? They are one of my favorite mediums and I find them very forgiving and very soft.
You did a fantastic job here on your coloured pencil portrait. I love the glow and realism you achieved with student grade pencils.
