There is a Gatetown in Planescape’s outlands called Bedlam, which connects to the Chaotic Neutral/Evil plane of Pandemonium. I think the origin and habitat of this beast is pretty clear by the namesake. The main characteristic of both Bedlam and Pandemonium is its endless howling and whistling wind and its insane inhabitants.
it could also be named that because that is where its first recorded sighting was(like how the Spanish Flu was actually probably from Kansas in the US, Spain was just not covering it up for the war effort)
You know, this would be great for a Horror themed dungeon crawl. Like, it starts out as an asylum, or maybe even just a hospital, but then they enter the mental ward and find a staircase to what should be the basement, but the basement looks like another level of the other floors with patient rooms, and what's more, it seems to keep going down, and down, and down. As the party goes down, things keep getting worse. At first it was some trauma victims, but as they descend deeper the patients get more insane, and then violent, but then more sickly, and then doing deeper still, there's undead in patient gowns, and then more things, shadows, then demons, all the while the floors, while still having the same layout, get more and more decrepit, and right when they think enemies are going to get even worse... nothing, the floor is empty, or maybe only a few shambling zombies. At this point its more atmospheric, more like a Call of C'thu'lu game than a D&D game, until they go even deeper still, coming across more amorphous creatures like oozes or aberrations, maybe a blood elemental, who knows. But then it finally culminates with Chaos beasts. Maybe one appeared earlier, but now there's several, along with a mix of the other creatures up to this point. And then, finally at the bottom, they encounter the Black Beast of Bedlam, maybe it's not immediately a combat and its in the human form of the (former)director of this facility, except they're now rambling madly.
As a GM who knows that anything intelligent can choose to go against its nature I'm imagining a black beast of bedlam just being the hyper weirdo hoarder recluse wizard that it previously killed and is now hiding as because "Lol this is fun why not ill stay as this its funny" because a creature of chaos is so chaotic it might bend to order and just do funny ha ha weirdness and have a really weird awkward moment with the party, just the party asking how long the wizard they knew has been dead and the beast just says "The wizard never even met you. You've only known me." and just absolutely devastate your paladin or something i dunno
It’s like finding out your bestie was secretly The Thing (John Carpenter, not Fantastic Four) the entire time, but the worst thing he’s ever done is encourage you to make really bad decisions after a few beers for the lols
This is very on brand with one NPC in my campaign my players love OOC and hate IC, Francis the Lich, who is overall just a very chaotic and chill dude. Makes magic items, but they're all cursed and he just can't figure out why. Doesn't even actually feed on souls because of the setting he's in, he's found another way to go about it, so the gods kind of just- gave up on trying to get rid of him. He's having fun. He isn't actually harming anyone. He's just a massive (helpful) pain in everyone's ass, and he wears shades for no other reason that he likes them, same reason why he's collecting small Eiffel Tower replicas.
The more he described the more I pictured John Carpenter's The Thing. Also the version I would run would probably require greater restoration to cure the infection, make ot a genuine threat.
"long time viewers of the channel might remember" Lol, no. I first saw your channel just over a week ago and I have binge watched monster of the week. I remember that video. I leave the videos on auto play as background noise for sleep as your voice and delivery is very soothing plus the content tends to induce extremely vivid and detailed dreams of a fantasy theme.
I was going through my subscription feed and sadly unsubscribing from a bunch of channels I don’t watch anymore for whatever reason. Then I go to this video, and I DO want to watch these! Why aren’t they being recommended to me anymore?
A friend of mine suggested that I send you this, and it’s an idea I had at the spur of the moment after seeing a random miniature. Basically, it was a small dragon without wings, and it just instantly hit me, displacer dragon, a dragon that uses the same techniques that they displacer be uses to get around, you’re more than free to come up with whatever you want about it. I just thought I would send it to you and see what you thought.
I've been looking for reasonably powerful aberrant horrors for use in a campaign. This one is a bit mean but I'm gonna use it as inspiration for some homebrew monsters.
Well, I didn't expect a short history lesson at the start, and now have to wonder what other words are more resent than I thought were old/ancient. And the flesh warping, always the worst, and no Dark elfs in sight to blame it on!
King Lear mentions Bedlam as part of the plot. One of the characters pretends to be insane and disguises himself as Tom of Bedlam. They used to let lunatics out so they could beg for alms.
Bah, amorpheous chaos monsters that turn people into flesh blobs get a bad rap I say! Done correctly, dropping one on your party is the perfect way to get them in character to say "What in the nine hells IS THAT THING!" Also don't treat wisdom as dump stat I guess.
Casually has a built-in Aztec Death Whistle. xD God that thing is terrifying.. Gonna make sure I stay at least 60ft away. I will sling spells long distance if I have to
With it's inspiration of The Thing kinda obvious, I can't help but imagine a shipboard adventure with the Black Beast as a stowaway, turning crewmembers into Chaos Beasts and using it's powers to sow fear and paranoia among the party and ships officers.
I’ve heard of this monster but never about it. Can’t wait to see what it’s all about. Edit: Well that is nightmare fuel. Definitely going to try to add it to a campaign, it’s way too interesting for me not to. I really liked the history of the phrase Bedlam in the beginning, it was a really nice touch.
Has anyone else realized that these videos can double as background music while gaming? Also OH MY GOD IV NEVER NOTICED THE SCP STYLE DATA PAGES RREEEEEE I HAVE TO WATCH EVERY MOW AGAIN
hmm, that wisdom loss bit of the transformation goes uhhh, little scary with the sanity rules I use... cooool toooo knooooow... **note to self: don't throw at party, make them see it at a distance, so they lose sanity, but don't fight it so they probably go insane and diiiiee...**
Love the whole able to speak from anywhere within 30ft trait, imagine it whispering into your ear the entire fight, or shouting in your party members voices from behind you to confuse you
OK at this point, I know at least 30 times I’ve asked for the gut fiend, parasite devil or demon. I can’t remember monster it might be in affliction. It might be an actual monster, but from what I know it was an actual monster and it’s from one of the lesser known books.
Campaign idea: the party was kidnapped and dragged into the city's sprawling sewers that stretch far below the upper layers and manage to escape after beating some low level beasts and then must warn and rally the city to fight the fleshcrafer biding their time under the city by delving into the deep caverns under the city with exclusively horrific monster such as the beast in the video with its minions, flesh golems, blood elementals, nercmantic flesh walls , and other whatever horrific things you want to throw in. I feel l8ke this could be a whole campaign by itself if used right. Maybe the fleshcrafter is cursed and must use their monsters because they can't leave their lab deep under the earth or somthing.
Something very similar appears in the War of the Spider Queen books! It is described as a Nether Spirit that embodies pure chaos, with a form that is constantly changing. Although its effects are more transmutational. Getting near it might cause your arms to turn into wings, or become made of gold, or cheese. I might use the black beast of bedlam as a base and create a random effect table to go with its touch attack
I have an arc involving a "free health care for the poor" Dr. Who has a glammed up book of vile darkness he uses to help the poor, and harm anyone else. Having a beast of bedlam sealed in his basement which he uses for his more miraculous healings makes PERFECT SENSE. THANKYOU FOR THIS GIFT.
Oh. Oh. I found my end boss. It was going to be a beefy terrasque but this fits so much better. Leaning into 'certain manifestations of magic function like (fantasy) radioactivity' could easily justify a genius sludge monster. There's no BBEG, but i still really want to give them a memorable final battle.
I wonder if this is what inspired Arcsystemworks to create the Black Beast in their blazblue franchise. Essentially also an eldritch horror that defies reality.
I can picture an amazing horror mission with this. The party goes to find a town or something for a mission but instead they found it’s been infested with chaos beasts and now you have a siege type scenario where you need to cut/sneak through and get to the creature at the center Really great creature to know more about!
Funny enough when you said imagine this guy erupted into this beast it reminded me of Dark SOuls 3 giant abyssall snake things that break through random enemies form
Great video! I think that the motive of this beast should just be... chaos. I could almost imagine it as a serial killer, stalking the shadows, leaving entire cities in states of terror.
16:30 sounds like an interesting option for taking warlock multiclass. Something about setting it free means it owes you some of its power potentially. If the player is a deal-maker they could grab part of its consciousness (idk if it would have a soul) and could use this as power, or potentially to grant the ability to charm distant cousins such as mimics. Sounds like a fun idea i would absolutely play
I appreciate that you keep continuously improving the production quality of your videos. These videos were always enjoyable, but the improved editing, visual aids, and better organized scripts have definitely leveled them up. 👌
Definitely will be using this monster in future games. At first, I thought I might make personal tweaks to Corporeal Instability, but then I realized that fighting a CR 13, players would usually be around level 9ish for that level of CR, plus it's stopped by a 2nd level spell that at least 5 different classes can get.
Glad I suggested this monster. It was a fun video to see done. I was not expecting the history lesson, but I learned a lot from it. And whether by accident or on purpose, your outfit fit the themes of this fantastically.
I've got a magipunk dystopia setting in the works for a small party of players - think I just found another major quest arc for 'em! Many thanks Dungeon Dad!
Black Beast of Bedlam sounds like it's a death metal band from Norway where all of the members are secret cannibals and end all of their sets with eating a person live on stage (so I guess not so secret then). Love me some spooky unknowable and horrific creatures. Also, all of the artwork for this lil guy is so sick. Great work as always, bud.
Got another gelatinous horror for you, the Teratomorph from 3rd edition monster manual 2 (p 194-195), a massive rainbow ooze that entirely lacks any cognitive capacity for being conniving, but that doesn't mean you should go anywhere near this thing. Unlike the bedlam beast being from the realm of madness, this slime monster is a manifestation of entropy; among it's terrifying arsenal its slam attack effectively has true polymorph on impact, it randomly casts planeshift on anything within its vicinity every round, and has a 1/5 change of just ignoring being hit even against spells.
Hey Dungeon Dad, if you haven't seen it yet, you should watch the animated series Scavenger's Reign (and its pilot short on youtube, Scavengers). Its about some humans shipwrecked on an alien planet teeming with life. Its an absolute buffet of fantastic biological sci-fi concepts that might spark some inspiration in you. Plus its a gorgeous show, fantastic plot. Seriously some of the best tv I've seen in years. The short alone is basically just a bunch of different ideas for "organic versions of stuff you'd find in an adventurers bag" in a big, mysterious, beautifully animated box.
All of the body morphing/changing from older D&D creatures reminds me of the Zern from 3.5 edition. Malicious Outsiders who constantly warp the flesh of other creatures in their twisted experiments to see how far they can take things. They can also instantly change the properties of their bodies in combat.
I hope the studios involved found Honor Among Thieves profitable to keep going. I really want to see some horror movies revolved around what D&D lore has to offer us. Like this thing. Take that description of a guy, just randomly walking through a small community village when WHAPOW, transforms into a groteque tentacled slime thing and starts attacking people. Or adventurers coming across this thing in some dark dungeon setting, while also being hunted by other creatures. I'm sure someone out there can make a horror movie script whereby the heroes need all the magic items they can get just to barely eke out a survival, let alone a victory.
Thanks for watching everyone! What monster would you like to see on the channel next??
Hi your cool what would happen if a good was taken by devils just curious this could make a good episode
Maybe you could do an SCP at some point? I always think your horror story esque monster videos are the best.
Did you ever do the almiraj, the rabbit with a unicorn horn?
Didn't feel like putting it down on the last, so day 24 of Darklight request.
Tyrant Jelly might also be fun
Ah man. That orange colour with the asylum story made me perceive you as a fled inmate. Immaculate.
I had the exact same thought process. Whether on purpose or by accident, it's perfect.
It's not a jump suit😮...I'm blown away
I thought it was a jump suit at first.
first thing I thought too!
Time to run that "The Thing" one shot iv been thinking about lol
Or a Jujutsu Kaisen one shot
Would be a great Halloween one-shot; as cliche as playing a horror one-shot on Halloween may sound. :P

Body horror for Valentines. How romantic.
🎶 I’ve got you under my skin 🎶
well you can become a cushy flesh beanbag chair for your eldritch significant other.
That's what she said.
I will see myself out.

Or did he meet you? We don't care. We can't remember. He does want you to has this cake though.
Wish the “any intelligent creature can choose to go against its nature” thing was more ubiquitous.
That honestly sounds hilarious and terrifying all at once 😂
It’s like finding out your bestie was secretly The Thing (John Carpenter, not Fantastic Four) the entire time, but the worst thing he’s ever done is encourage you to make really bad decisions after a few beers for the lols

It's always a good day when Dad uploads, but when it's horror themed, it's a great day.
Well this sounds horrifying and would be a nightmare for my players. I'm keeping it
The more he described the more I pictured John Carpenter's The Thing. Also the version I would run would probably require greater restoration to cure the infection, make ot a genuine threat.
It's definitely giving me Thing vibes, like if the Thing were more openly malevolent and mocking, and also a wizard.
scare the bejuzus out of your players as a slime they met in the dungeon begins to transform into bedlam
"long time viewers of the channel might remember"

I had the same thought....
This is probably the best artwork you've commissioned uet - hats off to Akira Arruda, they made an AMAZING monster
You also seemed to have. Forgotten to link their twitter??
The world of horror music during the combat section was a nice touch.
I'm glad someone else noticed it too.
my man made this video from the penitentiary
What did my boi do to deserve this?
Poor fella still thinks he's on TH-cam. Just talking to a wall.

11:54 like that fucking bear from Annihilation.
The best movie bear ever, to be honest.
or SCP 939
King Lear mentions Bedlam as part of the plot. One of the characters pretends to be insane and disguises himself as Tom of Bedlam. They used to let lunatics out so they could beg for alms.
Not entirely true. Beggars used to say they were patients, but the hospital denied they allowed inmates out to beg.

Neat, didn't know about this one! My favorite chaotic ooze will always be the Teratomorph though. It's bonkers, and looks like an electric bubblebath.
It always puts a smile on my face hearing Axelay's ost be played.
Nice vid on a cataclysmic cluster of chaos. Thanks for the video Dungeon Dad

Yo shoutout to Mork Borg! That game is fkn brutal
That table does look awesome. If only.
I dig the usage of World of Horror music, very fitting.
What we're looking at here is a creature that imitates other organisms, and it does it perfectly.
Imagine an entire city of Chaos Beast under the hand of that. Seem like something I would use on my players

I had to stop the video to say that video intro sequence was absolutely awesome
Campaign idea: the party was kidnapped and dragged into the city's sprawling sewers that stretch far below the upper layers and manage to escape after beating some low level beasts and then must warn and rally the city to fight the fleshcrafer biding their time under the city by delving into the deep caverns under the city with exclusively horrific monster such as the beast in the video with its minions, flesh golems, blood elementals, nercmantic flesh walls , and other whatever horrific things you want to throw in. I might use the black beast of bedlam as a base and create a random effect table to go with its touch attack
Great quality Dungeon Dad! New intro is fantastic, I liked the details changed. Great art, great monster, nice shirt!
Another creature to pack in my upcoming campaign. It's got the vibe. My players thank you/damn you from the future.
I'm positive the hour long special episode will be the Pale Night. She's such a badass!

16:30 sounds like an interesting option for taking warlock multiclass. Something about setting it free means it owes you some of its power potentially. totally using this as a minion for my chaos-feeding bbeg

Oh cool reminds me of the fetided fields enemy I made for my campaign

I see you dressed in all orange like an inmate for this topic, it's always nice to look the part.
The World of Horror music is a nice touch, such a good game and on theme for anything eldritch

Love to see the Mork Borg reference, this baddy is perfect for that setting too!
The Mork Borg shout was good, but I will always laugh at an Emotional Damage cutaway.

Absolutely loving, and living, for the new intro :]
Ok, I will play the beast, and Axelay too, thanks to background music.
The prisoner style outfit. Well played.
Hells, that was a cool intro. A damn cool intro.
"That's no ordinary Skull" - this time it's carrying around a demi-lich...
History jumpscare
Oh, man; these things probably have _such_ a feud with Deep Spawn.
I hope the studios involved found Honor Among Thieves profitable to keep going. I really want to see some horror movies revolved around what D&D lore has to offer us. Like this thing.
