ETHYLENE OXIDE: What You Need to Know
I want to talk to you today about a chemical called ethylene oxide, sometimes abbreviated at EtO. In 2018, citizens throughout Illinois learned that they might have been exposed-possibly for years-- to ethylene oxide. I am talking about the citizens in Willowbrook and Burr Ridge and Darien in DuPage County. What they learned is that a plant near their homes had been using ethylene oxide for years to sterilize medical equipment, and as part of the sterilization process, ethylene oxide gas leaves the plant through vents or a stack and gets into the atmosphere. This gas goes wherever the wind takes it, and there are homes and communities all around who very likely were exposed to this ethylene oxide gas for many years.
The reason this is important is because ethylene oxide is one of the most dangerous chemicals that we know about. Our government scientists have said that it is a “known human carcinogen”. It causes cancer if someone is exposed for long enough to high enough concentrations. Mechanically, what it does is: it damages DNA. The kinds of cancers that can result from this damage are Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, leukemia, other lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and breast cancer. Those are the cancers most frequently associated in medical studies with exposure to ethylene oxide. However, there are others which have been linked to ethylene oxide in animal studies, and we will be keeping an eye on those as well.
I will end with some advice: If you believe that you or anyone in your family may have been exposed to ethylene oxide and made ill as a result-perhaps diagnosed with one of cancers I just mentioned-you should do two things. 1) Go see your doctor and ask if your cancer might have been caused by exposure to ethylene oxide, and 2) Contact us for legal answers.
