Car Camping Cooling + Ventilation to Stop Condensation

  • Waking up wet will make you wince. But for real, we were sick of waking up feeling like we were in the splash zone. Having just a little airflow through your car or SUV camper will make it way more comfortable. We’ve been pointing the fan in, which wasn’t the original plan but it feels amazing. One of these paired with a window covering that allows you to crack a window or two makes it way better. Dimensions will vary quite a bit based on your vehicle so I didn’t make a .pdf guide for this one.

    I ordered the ABC and work on the cooling system just like Matt. To keep it simple, I only install the USB 5V fan (it comes with 4 long screws to hold two fan guards, I just use it to fasten fan to the ABS) and filter and let the cable drop to armrest and connect to power bank. I didn't use magnets nor net (hold power bank) for this project. It is not easy to get exact fit. Every sunroof is different. I try to get it to cover whole sunroof, but it is too difficult to get it fit and not easy to put it in and take it out. After many tries, I end up reduce the size to half of my sunroof sunroof sliding shade to get support. Sometime sunroof won't be able to close. DIYer need to try it out and the size is not always a straight line (for my case it is a curve). If you decide to go for 3/4 of full sunroof size. (which I don't think is needed, all you need is one or two inch bigger than the fan size.), you might need additional support because the ABS is too filmy. Yet it is still difficult to cut with knife. DIYer can add one more layer in few areas to get additional support.
    The sunroof now can be closed and opened and tilted and I can easily take it out and put it in even inside the car. It is easier for DIYer who doesn't have a lot of tools. My suggestion for people don't have a lot of tools, don't try to cover it all the way. As to the circle hole for the fan. If DIYer doesn't have the right tool, I suggest DIYer drill small holes along the circle, cut it open and sand paper it. That is much easier. I have an used 8CM "Thermaltake Mobile Fan II Adjustable Speed External USB Cooling Fan with One-touch Retractable USB power cable box for Notebook Laptop Desktop. A1888" I take the leg off and it is perfect for me. DIYer can try something else because it is not cheap and only 12CM is available. Or DIY a speed control. My project finished. The only thing I bought is ABS.
    Thanks to Matt. Now I need a tarp to cover the "tilted sunroof" in case of raining night.

      @@MattTheDesigner Like it or not, it’s proven to be successful. Do I “like” being force fed videos I didn’t ask for? Nope, but who does? Who wants to be forcibly exposed to things against their will? I can’t think of anyone that wants to be controlled by advertising, but the facts are it can be and absolute was in this case.
      As for improvement on future vids- do more. IMO, increasing your video content will come with not just repetition (but that alone helps) but making sure you create content that you truly want to create content on because you want to offer up help to others. Thank you! I am still debating whether to buy a "basic" trim used Sienna or Odyssey (w/out the standard sunroof) or the next trim(s) up (w/ std sunroof). The only thing I worry about is the mice eating the flimsier mesh. I think I would use a metal mesh instead, although I don't know if mice will still eat the plastic sheet to come in.
    Love it that the fan is reversible! Can help cool down the interior in warm weather by pulling air in or let the heat (and fart smells) escape first when it is too hot which the hotter air accumulates near the top by pushing the air out.

    • @MattTheDesigner
      @MattTheDesigner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So simple and creative! I'm at the start of converting an SUV into a weekend camper. Have you ever heard of anyone modifying their vehicle's HVAC blower to ventilate the cabin? I've successfully isolated the blower to run off an external power source other than the vehicle's battery. Before I invest in the electronics to run the blower on low speed off a go-kart battery, I'm curious if I'm overlooking anything. It seems to be a different approach to having the windows open. Interestingly, using the blower avoids issues with rain and pulls air through the filter which means no bugs or particulates such as dust when in Moab. Maybe the solution doesn't work for every vehicle, but my vehicle's blower pulls in air from the outside when the car is off.

    • @MattTheDesigner
      @MattTheDesigner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Lynda. The sunroof has a setting that lifts the back up a little rather than sliding the whole thing open. It’s made to keep light rain from getting in when it’s just cracked a little. So the sunroof does all the rain proofing not the thing I made. But if it’s a down pour you’ll probably get wet. Hope this helps.

    Great idea and neat idea. I want to try it. I wonder how does it handle heavy rain since we need to crack open the sunroof?

      Heavy rain can get in. Especially if the wind is blowing so it’s not perfect.

    Perfect solution to what I was looking for! Also looking to turn my CRV into a camper.
    Any thoughts on temporary mounting of solar panels from something like a jackery?

      That’s great to hear Johnson. I’m planning to do something like that in the future but in the mean time check out the short I posted about mounting a DIY roof rack. That might give you some solar mounting ideas.

      HI there! You might find this video link useful..... th-cam.com/video/vgY0mJnrpo8/w-d-xo.html
      I added a 100watt solar panel to the roof of my Subaru Forester using this as inspiration, and have it charging a Bluetti which runs my 12v fridge. I have it mounted between my roof cross bars with the magnets, and I added a pool noodle to the front bar so the wind would go up and over. I also added zip ties from my panel to the roof rails(for extra piece of mind) and a lock so it wouldn't walk away! It worked flawlessly on my drive out West and Back from PA.
      Another video to watch is from the SUVRving channel...He mounts his solar panel to a cargo box. Hope these help!

    I might do this just to vent the hot air air out in the summer while parked in the sun at work.

    • @MattTheDesigner
      @MattTheDesigner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that would work really well. I used a 1000mah battery pack over night and it hardly drained the battery at all. So you could get multiple days of venting out of 1 charge.

      @MattTheDesigner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably wouldn't need the filter to keep bugs out if you're not sleeping in it. That'd make the airflow even better.

    This idea just popped into my mind a few days ago to keep my dog and myself a little cooler on our trips, Wouldn't you know that I look on here to see if anyone had the same idea and here you are. I really like this a lot and plan to build one for 2008 Trailblazer. THANK YOU!!!

      Sure thing Doug. I can’t take all the credit though. I had a similar experience.

    Thanks for sharing. I wonder whether the material comes in clear or some transparent shade. Everyone can use this idea no matter of whether or not they dwell, camp, … , or simply travel back and forth to work or doctors appointments.

      I’m sure there is a semitransparent version out there somewhere. We leave this in all the time at this point. It’s totally out of the way and we don’t really notice it’s there.

    • @MattTheDesigner

      It’s on my list of things to try. I’m not sure it would be exactly the same but I bet something like it will work.

    What a great idea! How does the power compare to a RV roof vent if i use two of those fans? Also, can I just turn them around to draw out hot air?

    • @MattTheDesigner
      @MattTheDesigner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think with two of them you’d be getting close to an RV fan. And yes you can just turn them around depending and which way you want the air to flow.

      You definitely could sell it with everything already mounted on a plain rectangle of plastic. The buyer has to cut it to fit. If you wanted, you could include a folded up paper template that has lines printed for common sunroof shapes.

    This is awesome. I've been looking for a DIY project to create my own fan like this. Love this idea. Is one enough for an SUV?

    • @MattTheDesigner
      @MattTheDesigner  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It works for ours. The plastic should be rigid enough to hold two of those fans though if you think you want more air.
