    If it's possible could you share your knowledge regarding the armor if any used by Indian kingdoms (Maurya dynasty till pre Islamic period). Because most of the times when warrior are depicted from Indian kingdoms they are bare bodied with some small fancy metal coverings which I don't think would be of any effective use. The only time I have seem armor on Indian warrior is after the islamic invasion where Indian armor are very similar to that used by invaders, is this true or are we missing something.

    I get the impression that the Kusan connection with Shiva worship was very very meagre and with that of Buddhism was very very significant.
    Why should we discount Chinese sources?
    As you yourselves have mentioned the special gold coinage was reserved for Budda and lot of Buddhist architecture is seen in the period of Kushans.

    Great video.
    Just one query, how's it deduced based on one coin depicting Kanishka tending to a fire that he's Zoroastrian.
    Fire worship was a common feature of Indo Itanic religions , as you're well aware, including Mazdayasana & Vedic religion but also the Parthian religion which though Iranic wasn't Mazdayasana or Zoroastrianism.
    Besides weren't the Parthian's rule in Persia then contemporary to Kanishka's rule?
    My larger point being he could easily be a follower or the Vedic religion or that of the Parthian religion as he could be a follower of Zoroastrianism.
    Further, wasn't his father or grandfather a Shaivite or was it his son for the rest of his successors were definitely Sanskritised for want of a better word & followed Indic religions especially some sort of Shaivism or Vaishnavism.

    • @JayVardhanSingh
      @JayVardhanSingh  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have said that this is the most common type of coin that was issued by Kanishka. Also, if you read the Rabatak inscription and other inscriptions of Kushanas, we can see that Ahuramazda is mentioned. Besides there were other Iranian Gods as well.
      I am not sure where you have read that Parthians didn't follow Zoroastrianism.
      I don't think you can call Kanishka's father or Grandfather as Shaivite because they worshipped other Gods, including Zoroastrianism.
      For more information, read the 14th chapter of History of Civilization of Central Asia, Vol - II.

    • @ic5442
      @ic5442 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JayVardhanSingh The Rabatak inscriptions begin with a salutation to Nana & Omma ( Uma?) . Ahura Mazda is one of the dieties propitiated alongside Kumara who's obviously Skanda / Kartikeya among other divinities.
      I don't claim to be an expert not as well read on this topic as you are but from what I've read sometime back ( don't recall the book or author) , it was clear that Mithraism & Zoroastrianism were two religions practised by the Partisans - both being Iranic religions with Mithraism focusing on sun worship, something popular in those parts where the Kushanas ruled viz Afghanistan.
      Apart from the two named the Parthians, were religiously tolerant to other faiths namely the Babylonian religion , Christianity, Judaism , Zurvsnism - another native Iranic religion among other belief systems.
      As I remarked I wasn't sure if Kamisha's ancestors were followers of Indic religions. His descendants certainly were.

    My recollection is that King Kanishka at least favored Buddhism as equally as to his native religion worshipping Iranian gods connected to Zoroastrianism. The evidence come from archaeological finds in which on his casket showcased at the Peshawar museum, there are images of the Buddha being worshipped by the royal family in addition to the Iranian sun and moon gods, as well as inscriptions clearly showing he's a follower of the Buddhist Sarvastivada school. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanishka_Casket

    • @JayVardhanSingh

      No, his personal belief was most likely Zoroastrianism. But as a Kushan king, he patronised other religions as well. These included Buddhism.

  • @kartheeque
    @kartheeque ปีที่แล้ว

    it is simultaneously possible that Kanishka was personally attacked to the Iranic deities, but at the same time also was a patron of Buddhism. That can explain, why when he personally did an inscription, he dedicated it to the Iranic deities, but Buddhists fondly remember him as convener of the Sangha in Kashmir.

  • @worlddata8982
    @worlddata8982 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    What? Kanishka the great was a follower of Buddhism. Lord Buddha has portrayed in most coins of Kanishka. Even in the coin that portray Kanishka perform a sacrifice, Lord Buddha has portrayed in the other side. Not only coins but also He had make Buddha statues and Bodhisattva statues like Kimbell seated Buddha, Bala Bodhisattva, Kosambi Bodhisattva, etc. Most of those statues are included Kanishka inscriptions. He also made a Buddhist stupa which called as Kanishka stupa. Also Kanishka's advisor was Ashavagosha who is a Buddhist monk.
    We can conclude that Kanishka followed a syncretic version of Buddhism+Zoroastrianism or Kanishka was a Buddhist but He believed in Zoroastrianist gods and Hindu gods as Buddhist deities. For example in Kanishka casket, He has portrayed that Hindu gods Brahma and Indra worship to Lord Buddha.

    @saradamin6749 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your channel is very evidence-based and non-biased, also covers many different sources and point of views.
    However in this particular part, based on different sources I incline to believe that Kanishka was personally a devoted Buddhist while also tolerated to other religious traditions including his Iranian one (as we see now many Greek deities and mythology became decoration of Hellenistic Buddhist Stupa), or possibly he became Buddhist in later part of his life (and also still revered his previous tradition). Due to his rare coins imprinted image of Lord Buddha might be that many of coins have yet to be found and many Buddha images inscribed his name.
    His inscription at the casket in Kanishka Stupa of Peshawar really mentioned his name: "Kaṇiṣkasa vihare" (the monastery of Kanishka) which indicates his direct position as the patron of this Buddhist Stupa. This is compliment to the record of Chinese Sung Yun, Xuan Zang and Korean Hye-Cho. Such a great architectoral project couldn't be finished without the support of great economical background of the imperial royal.
    His connection with Buddhism is not found only in Xuan Zang or Chinese Buddhist record but also in many previous Buddhist scriptures translated to Chinese from Sanskrit/Prakrit Originals which now lost.
    Luckily at least one mention of Kaniska preserved in a Sanskrit Buddhist Text called "Bhaisajyavastu" of the Vinayavastvagama of the Mulasarvastivadin:
    " ...O Vajrapāṇi, 400 years after my passing to Nirvana there will be a king of Kuśana clan by name Kaniṣka. He will erect a stupa in this land and it will be known as Kaniṣkastūpa and he will do the Buddha worship as I has passed to Nirvana..."
    [eṣa caturvarṣaśataparinirvṛtasya mama vajrapāṇe kuśanavaṃśyaḥ kaniṣko nāma rājā bhaviṣyati / so 'smin pradeśe stūpaṃ pratiṣṭhāpayati / tasya kaniṣkastūpa iti saṃjñā bhaviṣyati / mayi ca parinirvṛte buddhakāryaṃ kariṣyati ]

    Good video👍 There is similar belief about the Satvahana rulers but their inscriptions at Naneghat indicates otherwise.
    The inscription mentions both Balarama (Samkarshana) and Vasudeva-Krishna, along with the Vedic deities of Indra, Surya, Chandra, Yama, Varuna and Kubera.
    Similarly for the Pandav leni in Nasik people dismiss that it has nothing to do with Pandavas, while it is true that the caves are dedicated to the buddhist shramanas, the donating queen does mention greatness of the son who she compares with Kama, Kesava, Arjuna and Bhimasena,Nabhaga, Nahusha, Janamejaya, Sagara, Yayati, Rama and Ambartsha.
