Failing the USMLE STEP 2... and How I'm Going To Fix It

  • So... I failed Step 2 of the USMLE. A few months ago I decided that I was going to pass 3 medical board exams for 2 different countries in only 3 months and I was only a few questions away from making it happen. I'm not one to make excuses so were going to talk about exactly what happened. As a Canadian student, I passed the Step 1 exam and then MCCQE 1 so I've obtained all of the qualifications that I need to work in Canada, but there's no way that I'm going to let this one go 💪 Here's everything I learned from writing the American exams, where I think I went wrong with my prep and how I'm going to be studying to absolutely smash the Step 2 on my second attempt 🔥 I'm hoping that sharing my experiences will be able to help Canadian and international students as well as anyone else looking to take on the American exams from another country.

    First of all, you did not let us down. At all. Don't be silly. And secondly, admitting your failures makes the rest of us feel like humans who can also make mistakes. Speaking as a medical student myself, it's so refreshing to see someone look so positively at their failures and bounce back from it. Not because we want to see you fail in the hopes that it'll validate our own failures, but because we're inspired by your positive outlook and energy towards failure and your inability to let life's hurdles weigh you down. I commend you Luca, keep it up. Genuinely rooting for you in all that you do. Thank you for inspiring us med students, all students of all degrees, to bounce back from their failures with a smile on our face.

    Haven’t actually watched the video, but goddamn this is a brave video to make, man. All you see on TH-cam from med students is “how I got a 270+ with this optimal study/exercise/wellness routine, maxed out stat points in mental health, a wealthy family, and iron-clad discipline; and how YOU CAN TOO!”

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Aha thanks Adam. Trust me, I would've loved to make that video instead of this one 😅 but sometimes there's a setback or 2 and I'm glad that we're able to take about them (because I think even the majority of those TH-camrs have also been through a bump in the road here and there.)
      Can't wait to get back to work and give it another shot 🤙

    Big respect for coming on here and admitting where you came up short. It’s really refreshing to see med school TH-camrs talk about failure because sometimes you can get the impression that failure is non existent 😅. Great video as usual and I’m sure you’ll smash the step 2 this time around, good luck!

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ahmad glad it helped :) Its a good question for sure. From a learning perspective, I think that any Canadian student who has any desire to take the USMLE at all should do so. Beyond that it will depend on how you see your future. There are a few US states that will not take Canadian trained physicians unless they have completed the USMLE exams. In addition, having the 3 exams done allows for an easier time when trying to obtain your work visa. I'm biased 😅 but my mentality is to just write it and keep it for if its needed 🤙

    Bro, I am gonna do step 2 then use that prep to segway into mccqe1...but you said you didn't find there was much overlap between the two ? Because based on what I researched, mccqe1 is closer to step 2 than it is to step 1.

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Antalon, I'm glad you brought this up. It'll let me clarify a bit. Step 2 IS closer to the MCC than step 1 is. However, passing the MCC does not guarantee that you'll pass step 2 (as was my case). The exams are different in the ways that the questions are asked and whets covered. Having said that, I think your method is the proper way to get it done. If it were possible, I probably would have taken 2-3 months to study for step 2 first (doing all the uworld questions), then switched to study for the Canadian exam afterwards.
      Best of luck with your prep!

    Darling there is no such thing as a fail...it's all based by that groups score that tested with you. So find the time when the scores are usually lowest..that may very well be summer. Also keep in mind the scores are often skewed against those that walk in to take the test, you need to spend perhaps 10k on a study plan to pass or not... That's what I think I saw online about 10 to 15 years ago...check the sources. So the scores are not indeed a reflection on you but how teaching is done too....and how well attended students are when it comes to teaching etc...and how the school organizes study for the USMLE sessions by each step.
