- The Step 3 is a gruelling 16 hour medical exam that represents is the final part of the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination). For many doctors and medical students, this represents our final experience with the USMLE exams and the longest exam of our careers. Today I wanted to show you my entire experience with the step 3 exam and talk about how I studied for step 3, what is on the step 3, how the step 3 is graded, the step 3 CCS cases and also share some resources that I thoughts were helpful. I'm hoping that this video will be useful for anyone looking to take one of the most challenging exams in the world.

Update - I PASSED :) Score of 215. Scores were released March 20th and my day 2 was March 8th. So happy to be done with the steps 🔥
Also, I just wanted to link a few resources that I genuinely found to be helpful for my studying:
- UWORLD - Pretty obvious at this point 😅 Do the step 3 bank + the bio stats review + the practice exams www.uworld.com
- CCS cases: mixed reviews from different people, I found it really helpful but I guess we'll see what my score results are. The benefit is they provide breakdowns of why you scored what you did and offer more direct feedback. ccscases.com

Been watching you for 3 years now since your comparison vlog between US and Canadian Medical Schools with Shaun Anderson, and now you’ve passed Step 3 and he just matched into residency! And I’m applying to medical school come May. Crazy how time flies, glad to see you’re still killing it man 💪🏼

Thank you for sharing amazing tips. Congrats on being finally done with everything, hopefully being staff is much better. I'm about to finish my 1st year of MD at UBC. After hearing this, I might considering writing the USMLEs as well, although it seems to be a lot of work (you slept at 2 AM and woke up at 5 AM).
Thank you :) I hope the first year at UBC was great. I would highly recommend it, but do the research yourself and see how it fits for your schedule. It definitely wasn't the most fun in the moment but I'm really glad that I did it now that I'm at the end 😅
Congratulations Man and I can totally understand the amount of sheer hard work that you had to put in to pass USMLE Step3 which is the world's toughest medical exam without a doubt. I have also recently passed USMLE Step3 at Boston with day 1 on 13th May and D2 on 16th May with an overall score of 222. Currently I am an ST6 Neurology Trainee over in UK and had done so many exams including MRCP-UK Plus Neurology SCE as well as native country Indian FMG exam but USMLE in my 30's felt the toughest of them all as it was difficult to find time to study with extremely busy shifts on a background of maintaining neurology skills up-to-date as I am expected to diagnose patients in clinic and hospital setting. I wish you best of luck for your family medicine career.
I believe in you and feelings are the best predictor! Uworld is power, I've used it for nursing and would use it for steps as well.

Nice to finish with the USMLE. Congratulations bro...basically based on your experience UWorld prepares you better for day two than for day one. Am I right? Could you share how many times you did UW?

Great video but i have a question since you just mentioned that the canadian exams takes 3 months for results to come out. If i want to apply for the 2025 match as an img do i have to take the exam in may as apposed to September since sept would be to late considering what you just mentioned. I am very curious please
The wording that the LMCC uses is along the lines of "the results are released 8 weeks after the last test session of the eligibility window" or something along those lines. In regards to your deadlines, the best thing to do would be to check directly with CaRMS. Sometimes the deadlines change from year to year so you'll want to check with them directly. Good luck!

What’s the process of working in the USA as a licensed family doctor in Canada? Do you have to repeat FM residency?
Also, does this differ for licensed family doctors from other countries (eg, from Australia)?
Eligibility for Canadian MDs who want to work in the US differs based on a few things:
1) which state you want to work in
2) how many years of residency training you’ve completed
3) which specialty you want to work in
4) whether or not you’ve completed the USMLE exams
5) which country you’ve trained in
At a high level, each state has different requirements and some are significantly different than others. In a few cases, there are multiple ways to qualify for state licensure. If you are a Canadian or foreign MD looking to transfer to the US, you should look up the process of obtaining state licensure for any of the states that you’re thinking of moving to 🤙

As a Canadian Family Medicine Resident, why did you need to take the USMLE Step 3 if you don't plan to practice in the States?
Hi :) Thanks so much for leaving this comment - I'm hoping that you can help me understand more about this comment as well. Each time I make a video about the USMLE tests, I always mention why I'm writing them and get this question anyways. In this video I've even created an entire 1 minute section at the very beginning of the video going over why I wrote the exams and time stamped it as well in the description.
Is there anything more specific that wasn't covered as to my reasoning / how can I clarify this further?
You mentioned it'll be hard to study for it later down the road once you're already years into your practice. But, you also said you're not planning on practicing in the States anyway, so why worry about taking it later down the road? Or is it to keep an open door on the possibility of doing further training later on in the States?
@@kandimae Sure thing 🤙I have no intention of practicing in the states right now - but things do change over the course of what I hope will be a very long career. There was a mass exodus of Canadian doctors to the us in the 1980s as billing drastically changed. Many of those doctors never came back to Canada. Billing has since improved and working conditions in Canada are favored over the US in many cases for primary care. However, because we are paid by the government here, things can change very drastically as a result of politics. For that reason, I believe that all Canadian doctors should make themselves as qualified as possible to hold future leverage during contract negotiations. In addition, if I ever need to move to the US for family reasons, this will now be much easier for me to do so.

Don’t these exams expire though?
You have 7 years to complete all 3 exams from the day that you pass the first exam. After that time, you will need to redo exams. Canadian students do not need to qualify for the ECFMG. The next step is to use my passing step scores to apply for an American-state specific license. The rules and qualifications change depending on where you are trying to work 👍
