Chemistry major here! You can turn the heat as high as you desire, as once the boiling point of a substance is reached, the temperature of the liquid/mixture does not increase. Instead, the energy is used to convert the liquid to a gas. Methanol boils at 66, ethanol boils at 78. the solution will be of lower boiling point. The first liquid collected should not be used (methanol). After the temperature of the liquid begins to increase again, you are now boiling ethanol. This should be collected! Chemistry, yay!
lol at the orange tupperware from the 80s/early 90s holding your jar up at the condenser, ill be honest ive got the same one and recognised it right away lolol.. proper bootleg moonshiner you are mate with the home made still... all the credit to you, you got a good system that works a treat there, good on ya for being so safety regulated too and telling all the viewers to stay safe, i respect that man
If one considers boiling points (in °C) of primary alcohols, one finds the following: methanol: 65C ethanol: 79C 1-propanol: 97C Therefore the first volatiles to come off will be methanol followed by ethanol and then 1-propanol and that will be the reason for a temperature and pressure gauge on the new still. Although you will get both high and low volatiles coming off with ethanol they will only be very slight that get dragged up during the distillation. However this is based on normal atmospheric pressure and can dramatically alter using the equation PV over T or Pressure times volume divided by Temperature (Boyle's Law). Good video nicely put together though.

Oh my gosh!! How old is that orange biscuit tin that ur jug was sitting on?!?!? My granny had one of them!! I would love one!! Gotta love Tupperware! 😃
let me start of by saying great video. your very clear and I like it. now I have 2 questions... the wood that you use on top of your pot. do you seal that 2 with something. besides the rocks and strap?.. and you have a clear way to make it from 140 proof to about 80 proof?
Hello Bastiaan, thank you for your questions.on my old still (one in the video) I used Silicon sealant. you can use anything, if you had a copper still you can use oatmeal and water. as long as you make a air tight seal so all the steam goes into the worm your a winner.let the fermentation take its time, once its done its done. don't run it before its finished let me know how you get on
I love your instruction, but there's a bit of misinformation. A sugar wash like you have produces none of the nasties such as methanol. That comes from when you ferment fibrous types of material such as corn and grains. So there's no foreshots in this mix, BUT... it's not going to hurt anything just to be safe. The other main thing is the boiling point. Alcohol reduces the boiling point of the liquid. Whatever temperature it starts to boil at, that is as hot as it can get. As the alcohol leaves the mix, the boiling point will begin to rise, but if your mix starts boiling at say 178 F, you can crank the heat up full blast and that's as hot as it will get, much like boiling water. 212 F is as hot as you can get water no matter how much heat you throw at it. Now that being said, MOST.. not everyone.. would agree that a low heat makes a better product. Most will crank the heat up if they are doing stripping run first, but use low heat for the final run. Finally, I would caution against using plastic anywhere for anything over 80 proof. There's a reason why liquer companies use glass for anything above that. There's a lot of leeching that can happen. Just a word of caution there. Thanks for posting the tutorial, and cheers!
+1...The theory of the boiling point seems to elude some guys, why does the temperature of a boiling wash increase? It only does that because the composition of the wash changes as some liquid evaporates. More alcohol evaporates than water, therefore the alcoholic strength of the wash reduces and the boiling point of the wash increases. If you increase the power then the alcohol evaporates more quickly and the boiling point also rises at a quicker rate. +1..0n the plastic, use glass or S Steel jugs..even jam jars...but a BIG NO NO to plastic....for your own sake.
A sugarwash won't produce any methanol, but you should still throw a shot away just to get rid of the aceton, ethylacetate, methylacetate etc.. It won't kill you to have it in, but it will taste better, and atleast i, get a terrible hangover if i drink it like that..
There's methanol in every fermenting process. Not as much as a sugar wash, but its there. It's a byproduct of fermentation regardless of the sugar source.
hello friend I have a question, I bought a column still with 4 story pylon, I would like to know if to make a good vodka, I have to distill several times, or once a 4-story column is ok? this is the hooloo SST65. thank you
I did have a still explode on me. Not because of how you think. I made the mistake of using spring clamps on my homemade still for my pot still cap. BAD move. Only because I was wise enough to use electric hot plates as my heating source did I divert catastrophe. The pressure built up so much and my spring clamps failed and I had 180 degree wash spewing all across my shop. Thank God I wasn't in there when it happened. I would have suffered 3rd degree burns. My shop was a mess. Now I use a professional rig and all is well.
Nice still and video. Question regarding methanol, if in doubt, how can u tell the difference between methanol and ethanol? I read somewhere that methanol burns with a red flame.
its hard to know and I've never heard of the red flame. but I do know that methanol boils off at a lower temp then ethanol, so methanol will always be the first out the still as the pot is raising in temperature. You MUST always discard the first part of the run (FORSHOT) with 25ltr of wash id recommend the first 50ml - 100ml
Dennis Henriksen on other forums, they say there's no methanol from sugar, only from grain washes. i always do the flame test, when it's blue it's fine. Good vids keep it up Moonshiner.
I would love to make vodka at home but I have no way of getting a distiller but I have seen that you can freeze it then drain the alcohol have you ever tried this and how did you get on? thanks for your help
Explain....NO, it does not. all you finish up with is the low wines from the wash, which may be about 10/12 % You then have to run it through a still twice.
i have a question (maybe you already said that, but thanks to my english i didn't understand that): if you'd want to add something to change the vodka taste, like apple pices (random) douring which phase of the proces and how you should do that?
I would recommend adding it at the start (sugar, water, yeast stage) but you can add your fruit in the still with your fermented wash and see how that goes (probably not as strong)
I guess that machine kinda scares me. Is that easy to use and hook all this up to? How much do machines like that cost and do you have a video of a bootleg one instead of that.. something for a complete beginner here and trying to save a buck here and there.
