The first 3-4month where we have to water through the soil, are we suppose to dispose of the excess water in the reservoir after or leave it for the plant to absorb later?
Hi Victoria,
If the reservoir is more than half full after you water the plant through the soil, yes- remove the excess water.
Classico 21 planter offers option to remove water from the reservoir easily. You simply need to take the inner pot out and get rid off any water that is in the planter's cover/shell.
If you have a little bit of water collected in the reservoir after watering, you can just leave it there.
To avoid having too much water in the reservoir, use a proper water amount and pour water slowly around the plant.
Make sure the plant is potted properly and the soil is not too loose.
Classico 21 - 20oz or so of water is more than enough.

A little bit of water running through and collecting in the reservoir is normal and should not be a problem.
If you have a lot of water in the reservoir this may be due to using too much water per watering or watering your plant too often.
If the reservoir is more than a half full, better to remove the water.
I recommend using the Soil Moisture meter www.amazon.com/dp/B014MJ8J2U?tag=mycityplants-20 for establishing a proper watering frequency.
This tool can also be used after you water the plant, to check if the plant is watered well.
You may start by using less water and then check the soil with the meter if it was enough.

does a soil meter work on lechuza pots that have only pons in it without any soil??*

Yes, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
- test the moisture level on an angle toward the root system to the pot's center, not straight down toward the bottom
- test the potting mix a few minutes after watering. This will give you the baseline for the moisture level after watering.
- continue testing and water the plant when the reading is down to 1.
***Some plants are very "vocal" when they get thirsty.
Observe your plants, and if they look droopy - its time to grab that watering can!
what if the plant needs new soil (after a while) or a bigger pot? do i have to wait another 3-4 months (after repotting) to use the self wathering feature? i guess yes?!

Hi!
If you just remove an old soil around the plant and add fresh soil after, you do not need to wait for 3-4 months again.
If you repot your plant in a larger planter, yes - wait for 3-4 months before using the reservoir.

Hi Alana,
Yes, you can! Before potting the plant in the Pon, remove as much soil as possible without messing up the roots too much. *** It is easier to do when the soil is dry.

Hi Juliette. I have a Maidenhair fern that I would like to use on a Lechuza planter. However, after listening to your presentation I have a question. You recommend letting the soil completely dry out (when acclimating plant) before watering again but, do I really want to do that with a maidenhair? Thank you.

The moisture levels of the soil before plants get watered varies depending on the plant type. When I say "the soil should be dry enough", I mean that plants should not be watered when the soil is still wet.
For Ferns the soil should still be slightly moist before watering.
I would recommend getting the soil moisture meter amzn.to/3LTETOC to help you to establish a proper watering frequency .
Ferns should be watered when the meter reading is in the 3-5 zone.

I wonder is a small aquarium air diffusor would be of use in the water reservoir when it is full. It would keep the water well oxygenated and stop anaerobic bacteria perhaps.

If the right watering frequency is established and the proper breaks- "dry phase" - are provided between the reservoir refill, there should not be any bacteria issue. Pon subtract that is added at the bottom of the inner pot also filters the water.
Can you use this pot with succulent type plants ?
Hi Micaela,
The beauty of these planters is that they put your plants in total control of how much water they need to take.
We do pot Snake plants (comes from a succulent family) in Lechuza and they are pretty happy.

Few Things To Keep In Mind when potting succulents in these planters:
- pot should not be more than 2" larger than the root system
- soil should be bone dry before watering this type of plants (before re-filling the reservoir)
* For classico 21, the size of a succulent type plant should be 6"-7" D. Use potting mix with a great porosity.

Deltini planter comes with a special subtract (soil substitute) and it is perfect for the succulent famiy.

I would recommend repotting Pilea within the first 6-12 months.
Yes, It will be happy in Lechuza plante. You can also use Lechuza PON substrate instead of soil. Green Luck! 🌱
I don't have a lift out inner pot, so how do I water without filling the resovoir?
Hi Simon,
If you are referring to Lechuza self-watering planter that does not have removable inner pot (Like Classico Color model), then you need to water the plant through the soil for the first 3-4 months.
After 3-4 months period, you may use the water reservoir.

I have never used this clay aggregate. Curious to know more.
After reading about Leca, clay balls need to be soaked in water to function properly, where Lechuza's subtract Pon (under the soil) works as the sponge and can absorb the water from the water reservoir, then slowly release it in the soil.
Have you ever used Leca in any self-watering pots/pots with water reservoirs?
Any of your plants fully potted in Leca and pots have drainage?
How do you test this material to know when it's time to water plants?
Leca sounds like a good material to use for plants potted in pots without any drainage. It will provide a space between the soil or roots at the pot's bottom (a bit of drainage) and work as the soil moisture-controlling buffer.
BUT - I am sure you heard me say it many times in my videos, drainage is essential, and it is best to pot plants in pots with proper drainage.:)
Could you fill up the planter entirely with Lechuza Pon, without using soil ?
Hi Myriam,
Yes, you can.
Keep in mind that PON is a heavy substrate and, if using it for large plants, moving the pot around might not be easy.
