When such things could be important for actual survival, being adopted into a clan was very definitely a thing. It gave identity and protection to people who, for whatever reason, found them outside the social structure.

If I understand correctly, in the Scottish clan traditions, a person who is adopted becomes a member of their adoptive clan in every meaningful way. I agree with Rocky's advice to discuss it with his father but I think this person has every right to wear the Cunningham tartan. I certainly wouldn't look askance at him for wearing the tartan of one of his "blood" clans so there's no wrong answer but by tradition and upbringing the strongest claim (IMO) is Clan Cunningham. TBH, if I were in that situation, I would probably choose to celebrate all three clan traditions at various times.

Wise words. It's a genuine dilemma whenever drawn between nature and nurture.

This is familiar territory for me as well. My adopted or legal last name is Tucker. My biological father was German (Noll) & my biological mother is MacNaughton. Recently, through distant cousins I learned my mother actually fought to try to keep herself but was denied. Knowing that I feel a certain connection & one day hope to be able to wear the MacNaughton tartan (hopefully by tax time).

Yeah I’m adopted and my mom was a MacCallum and I plan to get her/ our family tartan that is who my family was and is. By blood I’m African-American and by adoption Irish and Scottish and I try to celebrate all of that because it’s all me.

I was adopted into a family and their tartan is what I will wear. I didn’t know any of my biological father’s family until I was an adult, and thus, they have had no real bearing on my life.

I am a Henderson and if it were me, I would most likely go with the Cunningham. But I think you should go to several of the Scottish festivals and get to know some of the Hendersons and Cambells. You will find some really good people.

Oh, boy this is the video I needed most! I was so torn on whether I should proudly wear my Forbes tartan kilt or not. I was just a Chinese with absolutely no Scottish heritage or connection until the Forbeses adopted me into their clan. They chose me to be a part of their clan and now I know 100% that as I wear my kilt, I am thanking my parents for adopting me into their clan. Congratulations, you just earned yourselves another subscriber!

This brings to mind something I've wondered about. I like the look and feel of kilts as dress and semi-dress wear. As far as I've been able to find my family has no connection to Scotland nor to the clans. My wife's family seems to have a distant connection to McCay. I'm from Kansas, no "official" Kansas tartan, I'm retired US Navy, though there are some associated with various parts of the Navy, there doesn't seem to be a US Navy tartan. I love the new Ukraine Forever tartan, and it reminds me of Kansas too. I've looked at some of the other universal tartans and only some of the hunter tartans caught my eye.
So to not encroach on a clan I have no connection with, nor other groups I'm not fully connected with what are your suggestions?

There are no restrictions . Most Scots from what I have seen enjoy anyone wearing the kilt . Just wear it with the respect it deserves but I know you would anyway judging from your post . I have many kilts in clan tartans I have no affiliation with .

Wearing the adoptive father's tartan makes sense. The questioner can honor the genetic parents another way, like a bit of their respective tartans framed with a little background as a wall display.

Regardless of the leanings or choice, make sure to talk to your adopted dad. Let him know you’re reasons, especially if it’s meant to not dis him, but to honor other.

    Our family surname is Kennedy.
But my Dad married an Australian by the surname of Coe.
Because both my parents and Grandparents have passed away, I have no idea what Tartan belongs to our clan. ???
And we don't have much info on our decendants.
My mother passed when I was very little. ....
Theres more than one Kennedy tartan.
We don't live in Scotland or Ireland.

I think it's important to remember that clans weren't only related by blood, but also by fealty. Also, I am a pagan, too! Maybe for a future program, what about a widow continuing to wear a husband's tartan? I have Scottish heritage--McRae and Stewart--but only through the female line.

I 100% agree and that it could go the other way as well. My last name is White, dad was adopted, but his bio name would be Hannah and THAT is the tartan I wear and claim. For me, that's blood, but I agree that it is what you feel it is. Bravo Zulu brothers.

Of course you can . There are no restrictions wearing any tartan other than restricted ones which you can't buy anyway .
