Ha! Your mastery of patience in video consumption is unmatched.
Isn`t it crazy that you guys have put in 90% of the work to provide the solutions, but some people can`t put in 10% effort to just listen. Forget the keyboard warriors, many of us are very thankful for your channel.
@@jonathanreddish8590or perhaps some of us that have been playing for 50 years already know how to tune drums. And guess what, taste in tuning may change a dozen times over 50 years and tune accordingly. In a gig, I may decide to change tuning either by bringing another drum, or completely de-tension 2 lugs completely, and still sound great

I got that alot of u tubers seem to wear only 1 shirt.
This is why I'm such a gear geek. Once I start learning about something I like, I want to know as much as possible. I have a large kit, and I've set it up and torn it down a few times, especially when adding on. I want it as ergonomic as possible. I LOVE tuning and maintaining drums. I treat all instruments like an orchestral piece, even though I'm mostly a metal head.
Funny thing is I did this completely by accident with guitars. I live in a small town, and it's a haul to get to a good guitar tech, so, I became one.
I just wanted to learn just enough to noodle, play a few songs and whatever riffs got my attention. Within a couple months I was setting up and fixing guitars for all of my friends, from their kids' inexpensive guitars to thousands. Hard tails to high end Floyd Rose. All out of necessity and patience. Plus I'm a patient of the Veterans Administration healthcare system. I can wait while I'm waiting to wait.
Have been loving y’all’s content for quite some time now. Please keep on keepin on. Also, can we all just take a moment to appreciate Cody’s musicianship and the high quality production this channel has always had? You guys are the bee knees ✊🏼🤘🏼
Probably some of the best videos I have seen! It's really hard to get the perfect sound out of a kit. It does take many attempts and in that way yes it does take way more patience than what people think.
As an older musician who has eked out a living for decades with his art, my journey is nearing its end. But everything experienced along the way has led me to the conclusions expressed here. Thanks for putting it out there.
My patience isn’t a constant and can vary day to day, but this channel since it’s inception has motivated me to not just jump right into playing and to hone and experiment with my sounds. My tuning has never been better or more understood by me, so now I know exactly how to dial in my sounds
Watching your videos and applying your philosophies over the past few years has played a huge role in helping me become confident in my sound. The patience, and even frustration over the years really does start to pay off when you feel confident in your ability to get the sound you want out of your drums. Thank you guys for everything you do.
I am a long term viewer of this channel. Maybe you should ignore what people are saying and just keep putting it out. All the comments below show you people are listening and learning and enjoying. Ignore the negatives - you can't help them. They may not ever be converted. You've helped me and many, many other drummers. See you next time.
Awesome! I'm grateful I was taught at a young age to keep an open mind. Be open to playing as many genres as possible. - Even when not our favorite or preferred style. I couldn't agree more with all that you said... living in a world where instant gratification is expected is limiting our experiences, and hence stifling our learning. I, for one, know that I really have to put in the hard yards to master something, or yield good results. And, for me at least, my kit makes me work for the results I want, no free give aways... which, in turn, makes me appreciate it far more...that sense of achievement at the end of the day is joyful.
6:12 Dang it! This is so true; I see it happening all the time. I think this hit the nail when it comes to why there are so many "tutorial" or "cover" videos that, instead of being about the science, the experimenting and trying in drums and music, like you said, this turns into validation or attention-seeking. I learned from you guys a lot about the fundamentals of knowing your instrument and the why and how. That makes a difference.

6:30 re external "validation". There's a balancing act between the positive notion of self-trust and agency over your sound with the act of listening to your audience. Especially if you're playing for a band leader/client/music director that wants a different sound than you're producing, you owe it to them as a musician to listen to what they want and what works for their ears, then use the skills you've developed through patient practice and experimentation to provide that with the tools you've got in front of you.
Yeah, what we're referring to is different from checking in with "the boss" or the individuals you're working with to ensure that you're contributing in the way that they envisioned. That's a practical, responsible approach to take. What was referenced here was more about not knowing whether a sound is "good" and asking other people who don't know any of the relevant context to judge the sound in a vacuum and provide feedback.

First comment, getting to the end, and always enjoying the great tuning tips and sweet hacks from you guys! My patience is pretty good 👌 BTW, my all time favorite hack I've learned on this channel is using cotton balls inside the toms as a dampening/almost natural sounding gate for the toms, I use it ALL THE TIME NOW!
I ALWAYS watch your videos to the end! Just to see what groove Cody's going to come up with next is a great reason all by itself. But you have so much fascinating information to impart, people who take drumming seriously really owe it to themselves to give you guys more than just a casual listen. For me, a new SLaD dropping is one of the things I love about Tuesdays. Keep on doing what you're doing, guys. Some of us are very much paying attention.

experimenting and even sometimes getting wrong, is at the heart of truly mastering anything, including the drums. we mustn't be afraid of exploring ideas, because that'll only prevent us from developing as people and musicians
I’m not sure why some folks would give you a hard time, but those of us that have been playing for 50 years already know how to tune drums but watch anyway, and add comment that might be helpful or not. I won’t get into wood versus metal, but the truth about that there can be a huge difference, depending on the drum. There’s no way to get a wood drum to sound as bright as my joyful noise “tailpipe” brass drum for example, and owning over 30 drums both wood and metal, I’ve tried. Aluminum sounds most like wood, but then again, different wood sounds different from other wood.
As far as tuning, I may change tuning several times in a day, like de-tensioning 2 lugs completely for a quick totally different sound, and have it still sound great. Carter McClean is a great drummer that does it all the time.
See, there’s no wrong way to do it, if you tune it to how you think it sounds good.

!00% agree on most of what you said. My only disagreement is...I believe the journey is more important than the destination.We often over look what it takes to get to our desired end rather than embracing it. As the saying goes, "embrace the suck!' that is where you learn. Great video!

Made it , and whilst I follow my own voice when it comes to tuning, I am, for some of the reasons you’re talking about, considering a period with only a paper notepad as a tool for any drum related stuff. To see if that makes me feel any better about things.

The internet is absolutely a black hole full of information overload. I have watched many of your videos and enjoyed them, but I was around before the internet itself, so am bemused and horrified that generations of people are really being ingrained with shorter and shorter attention spans. The hit of one video after another really dulls the brain cells :) It’s hard for pre-internet people to realise that this is a growing phenomenon.
Well said, sadly true being 58, its so different now and not for the better, especially since the "shorts" videos started, it literally causes impatience and maybe a.d.d., i feel it myself and try and fight it but feel bad for gen z , hopefully they dont have too many negative affects growing up in these times
Love the videos & watch until the end. I absorb the information but what I haven’t done yet is spent time playing with my tunings. I recently sprained my wrist & can’t play so maybe now is the time to spend that quality time with my drums finding some new sounds. Keep up the great work. 👍
Professionals are made, not born...Nobody is born talented, it is time and patience. The joy of nailing something you've struggled with for ages is priceless...
you're confusing talent with skill. talent is innate - you are born with it. your skill is something you hone over time.

I've been learning how to tune my drums for 35+ years, and I'm not done yet.
I know I loose patience sitting there tediously chasing down sound wavers between lugs, when all I really want to do is play drums. I can't express how important it is to me to learn a device like the drum dial. It gives you measurements! You can always raise or lower the number. You can get on to playing, recording, and writing. Which to me is more desirable of an activity. But, like Cody says, always use your ears and don't be afraid to experiment.
A lot of times I click on to share with my self to watch later… like what I’m doing now… lol.

When I learned to tune my drum, I learned to tune myself.
I really appreciate you guys, you have provided really great and useful content, i think personnally I can switch off to the "keep an open mind" videos because i feel i do and i dont get as much from those videos, but thats ok I understand why you make them, i think ive only not made it to the end of a few videos, as i really enjoy the content and the little snippits of beautiful playing inbetween, again thank you for this great channel, thank you for your time and effort, oh and i found the metal/wood snare drum video brillant! And i have to say I completely dissagreed with you, right up until just before the end when the type of pang noise i attribute to a metal snare came out of the wood one! Boom.. mind blown.. id love more videos like that!

Ah yes! Though we didn’t really address it here, “focus” is the other aspect that goes hand in hand with patience. It’s a tricky one!

Agreed, except, generally, metal shells and wood shells *do* have different tonal characteristics. No idea what that comment's about. 😆🤷
The shells on their own certainly sound different when you tap them with a mallet. But when you install the hardware, put on some heads and wires, and tune them up, you can get them to sound almost indiscernibly similar in a back-to-back demonstration and virtually indistinguishable without a point of reference. That's part of the bigger point being made here; there's a tremendous amount of crossover between drums and the sonic differences that we may gravitate towards assigning to the shell could actually be a result of any combination of every other factor involved (not the last of which is the player).
@@SoundsLikeADrum Without adequate experience, yeah, that, indeed, *could* be the case. The key is experimenting and training the ear in order to gain said experience.
There's a real shift in attitude in this video and the last one about wood/metal snare drums. Are things going OK, @Cody ?

Man, I've been thinking about that video all week. It's made me thank my lucky stars I didn't go out and amass a huge collection of snares. I invested in one high end kit back in '07 and have been playing them ever since. Though, I've recently started into a new project with a young artist and I have gotten the itch to get a kit for this project. Especially considering we now have a trailer!
