    Reminds me of the 60 Minutes feature on a professor named John Pilley and his Border Collie named Chaser. Chaser was said to know over a thousand toy names and understood verbs as well as nouns. They picked about a dozen toys she knew but included one she had never seen before and had her retrieve them one by one. Halfway through they asked for the toy she had never seen. She went through the pile then came back with a look like "are you sure?" They asked again, and she went through the toys, then deduced that the toy she wasn't familiar with must be the one they were asking for. She grabbed it, correctly.
    These dogs are amazing, and great companions. Scoti is a good friend too I bet. Great job.

      @Enoonmai That’s not exactly true in my experience. I’ve been the dog sitter for three generations of border collie that my neighbors have had and in that time I’ve learned that a well trained and socialized border collie can be very mellow inside for long periods of time. They will even sit in your lap and sleep in your bed if given a chance.
      BUT, where you’re comment probably comes from is that Border Collies do need to get out and run vigorously a couple of times a day. I usually throw a frisbee to the dog and let her fetch it until she gets tired. Even if it’s only 5°F outside. If you can’t, or won’t, do that; then a Border Collie isn’t the right dog for you.

    You have a great way of interacting with your dog - very clear and consistent so he always knows when he has done something right. And probably you spend a lot of time with him. • @matthewlarkin73
      @matthewlarkin73  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thank you Linda. Scoti learns the names of these toys immediately. He has about 100 more toys in his toy bin. I just shot this video for my aunt who likes my dog. It was a first take. My aunt bought him the "man" which I tried to rename his "favorite toy" so that she might get a kick out of that (which didn't work). I plan on recording a few more videos in the near future.

    Classic. 🤣 This reminds me of my border collie Brody. I taught him to go get me "Mr. Wine Cooler!" Literally Brody knows to go open the fridge and get mommy Mr. Wine Cooler. It took me 1 month. 🤣 Holly and 2yr old border collie Brody from Delaware.

    You should play tug with him because he looks at that as a reward! BCs love doing tug of war with toys. It helps him focus and will keep him more focused on the tasks that you’re asking him to do.
    I’m also a mom of a border collie.

    • @matthewlarkin73
      @matthewlarkin73  ปีที่แล้ว

      OMG. You are so right. Tug-of-war is actually Scoti's favorite pastime. I think there is one point in the video where he doesn't want to let go of some of the toys - the green stick, and the two ropes - that is because those are toys I use for tug of war - so he was hoping to engage in that activity. Out of his 100+ toys (and counting), about 20 we use for tug of war. It's funny, because if I ask him for a toy used for tug of war, and he can't find it (or it's stored away), he invariably shows up with another toy used for tug of war.

    His eyes show him to be very clever. The reason he runs down the staircase is that he expects to get some treats as reward in the kitchen.

    • @matthewlarkin73
      @matthewlarkin73  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good observation. But I have never used treats to teach him anything. His "treat" is my encouragement. He goes downstairs because in most cases, I ask him to find toys that I know are downstairs.
