    Indeed. I've always had someone tell me, "oh, your parents are protestants, you can't support Ireland."
    The cause of Irish reunification should never be about religion. It is a conflict between an oppressed people and an occupying force.

      I am a Atheist and a republican. I have been to Belfast many times and my religion has never been asked.

      Just tell them about the bold protestant men who fought for Irish freedom, the United Irishmen and the green volunteers. It's not about religion never was that's a media divide that because it was Catholics getting attacked and petrol bombed out their homes in Belfast the media ran with it. But the IRA attacked RUC and British soldiers and other loyalist paramilitaries and yes when the UVF and UDA/R went around killing Catholic civilians alot of IRA men killed protestants indiscriminately but they were told to stop by the chief of staff and commanders of the Belfast brigade because the war was not sectarian but a war for freedom against an occupying force always has been. From the first armed rebellion in the 1600s to the 30 years war in 1969. I hate people that bring religion into it as if that's what it was. The IRA went political and honestly not much has come of it even 20 odd years after the GFA. Now with brexit happening and a hard border may being out in place I'm uncertain what would happen.

    I'm a Protestant. I don't hate Catholics, in fact most of my family is Catholic, and I support FULLY a Britain-free Ireland. My religion has nothing to do with my views, since religion divided the country in the first place. I don't even like saying I'm Protestant...I'm a Christian. That's why after studying years on how Britain has tormented the Irish for their faith, I want them out. Gone. Once again though, it's not always religion, sometimes it's just who wants to see Ireland freed.

    Having been involved in the North/South Irish divide from some years, I am drawn to the idea of a "uniting" Ireland in which politics, culture, history and all of it continue the current fusion of living more or less ignoring the "border." Such a fusion is far advanced with surprising consequences on both sides. Jack

    @tlaney1776 Yet he also said "though I have usually posed as a Catholic, I have not done my duty for 15 years, and have not the slightest tincture of faith left" Either way, the matter is unclear. It is safe to say he struggled with religious faith and at times rejected it personally. As such, to speak of his religious beliefs with certainty is a bit of a misappropriation. I have to agree with Unified32 on this, Connolly was a great hero, regardless of his religious identity or lack thereof.

    Momentous and wonderful words indeed by the great man, however I’m afraid it is only right that I correct your introduction, as the man himself always “spoke true to power” during his life and indeed did so in his last statement. James Connolly was NOT executed for “treason” as he was not a “traitor”, he was executed for “Armed Rebellion” which is different, only Roger Casement was executed (hung) for Treason of the 16. James was executed under 256.10.b of DORA (Armed Rebellion) CM record number WO 71/354.

    "My faith is in mankind..." Che guevara. i'd say this is similar to Connolly's point of view. If you read his writings you will see that he was almost prophetic. All that's been done is the changing of the colour of the flag and the names of the rich.

    @AmericanFenian 1) James Connolly was a soldier
    2) Che won in Cuba? The same could be said about James Connolly, his biggest achievement was inspiring years of Republican struggle against Britain. (no mean feat)
    BTW yes Socialism is about Nations being friendly and to stop "brother" from financially and socially raping "brother" Connolly was a proud Irish Republican Socialist. If only more of us were the same. Connolly would be turning in his grave at this horrific Banana Republic we have.

    Sir, could I please ask you to change your description above on the video as it is an insulate to James Connolly’s memory. Connolly’s court martial offence was not “Treason”, he (354) was in actual fact charged with “Armed Rebellion” which is quite different. Many thanks.

    • @skippership7
      @skippership7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mike finnegan Where on earth are you getting your information from, this is simply not true! Look at his death certificate(s) what is the date on the Irish version and what does it say? “Not what you are claiming for sure”. And James was not also charged with “aiding the enemy”, this is complete rubbish! Look at the official national records in Kew, (the British if nothing else are bloody good record keepers), it’s quite clearly there under WO71/354 for JC. I am also very keen to hear why you claim his execution was illegal? On what legal basis are you making this statement, is it one of retrospective application perhaps? Let me know your thoughts.

    We are the fools, 800 years of occupation to hand it to the church and to add insult to injury we then handed it to the EU. For those who call it an Irish border you are wrong it's an British border that has no right on this island. The North can only be solved by the gun and the Irish Republic can only be reestablished by leaving the new occupation of the EU. Stand up respect your past and carry the torch of their bravery to set us free.
