Same for me, I think it’s his genuine happiness. And Tanya’s laughter. I enjoy these guys so much. I don’t have a horse, I doubt I ever will, but after watching Steve and the clever cowgirl, it’s not impossible to dream it. Maybe it would help me to have a creature to take care of that gets me dressed and moving. Idk.

This is a perfect example of the slim difference between a wonderful horse & one who might otherwise be a throwaway. Steve you're not only saving people but you're saving horses, by teaching leadership skills. The tools you use are simple and effective if used with informed skill. The way you teach is understandable and effective for both horse & owner, giving a firm ground to build on. Thank you.

agree totally. I have to laugh...half of what Steve says i cant understand. He kinda mumbles at times plus I am from Texas so the accent is STRONG. BUT I do watch and love to watch the animals change with a little direction. i find it is the humans that dont know what to do and all of us need training. I have dogs and i am firm with them. They are pretty good dogs..until they see other animals..then i gotta try to get their mind off of the other animals. I wouldnt know where to start with a horse. LOL

It's an axiom of "natural horsemanship" that horses want a leader, want someone that makes them feel safe, etc. You hear it all the time, from all sorts of trainers, in books and videos. But watching Steve work with spoiled pushy horses is the first time I've actually FELT what that means. These horses respond to Steve surprisingly quickly and you don't sense any resentment from them. Some are more stubborn than others, when it comes to giving up their old ways, but they do it eventually and seem just fine with it. Steve just radiates that he's on their side and they know it intuitively. It can't be faked.

You are right on almost all, but please don't use the NH term. There is no such thing. It was a term made up in the middle of an interview. There is only good horsemanship that includes things that are natural to the horse. That makes the humans life easier, and things come easier to the horse if you use what is natural. Sadly there are many that claim to be practicing NH that shouldn't be near a horse.

    • @epona9166
      @epona9166 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@MaxNafeHorsemanship Point taken, which is part of why it’s written in quotes. The term Natural Horsemanship is a thing, however. Pat Parelli came up with it and it’s the title of one of his books. Idk if it’s copyrighted. There’s also a great book by veterinarian Dr Robert Miller called Natural Horsemanship Explained. It describes the training methods and belief systems of a number of excellent trainers, most of whom don’t like the term. I’m thinking Buck Brannaman and Mark Rashid, but there are a number of others. But like I said, point taken.

    • @MaxNafeHorsemanship
      @MaxNafeHorsemanship 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@epona9166 Nope, NH is NOT a "thing". There are no standards for it. That is why it varies so much from person to person and there are such varied opinions on it. It's just a word that people like to throw around because it sells. If you don't believe me, just go into a grocery store and see how many times you find the word "natural". Yes, it was Pat that started it, and being popular at the time, many others jumped on the band wagon and claimed that they are natural horsemen just to make money. I can think of several others besides Buck and Mark that are actually offended by the term. In most cases, people mean well by it, but I will NEVER claim to practice NH. I would like to think I am better than most of them. Fact is, GOOD horsemanship was around long before Pat was even born.

It seems that training the owners of the horses is at least as important as training the horses themselves.
I really like that Steve Young is not "breaking", scaring or hurting the horses.
Instead, he's being the "lead horse" and teaching the owners how to be the same.
I think that critters of all kinds who live with humans need to have trust in their humans to make the rules, lead, nurture and keep the critters feeling safe.

Wonderful to see such a significant improvement in just one session. Steve's training of horse and human is spot on. Great reminder that love and affection for horses without establishing healthy boundaries and respect for their owner/leader, can create some unpleasant and dangerous behaviors with the animals we so care about. Bravo to both Steves.

FYI for those wondering (especially us Americans), in the description "5yo ISH 17 hand" -- ISH stands for Irish Sports Horse. They aren't required to have Irish Draught blood in them but this horse definitely appears to. They can certainly stand quite tall but also fill out a good bit, becoming quite stout, yet athletic horses by the time they're 7-8yo. I'm so pleased that they are working to solve these issues now before he finishes growing. He's such a gorgeous horse, too! Another great video, SYH Team!

I remember scrolling through TH-cam some time ago and dismissing Steve because of his chatting . Big mistake on my part. I love his understanding of how horses think and the way he makes a plan for every individual horse. So many simple techniques, no cruelty or anger, he demonstrates so that you can see that this works , through before and after videos. Anyone who owns a horse can improve their relationship and maybe take a separate path to improve the life of their horse. His wife Tanya is brilliant. Also his aids, like the flag, safety clips etc are tools to make things easier. Fight, Flight, Freeze, not looking directly at eyes, approaching from side, importance of feet, just groundwork information and so much more. All free too. Highly recommend and there is much more too. Thank you Steve and Tanya.

This is why it's so important for foals to start halter/ground training them before they get too big. I just shake my head at people that think that you can't start training a horse just because it's too young for a saddle. A lot of fundamentals in training a horse can be done from the ground and you can start when they're 1 or 2 years old, just getting them acclimated to being handled, clippers and farriers, teaching them to listen and respond to you.

Hello to both of you. :) Your movies are so good that I who do not have a horse or hang out with horses still watch. It's like a detective film, I get to see how you analyze and figure out ways to help both the horse and the owners. On top of that, I learn how horses work if I meet one. Keep up the good work. :)

Nice analogy!!! I hadn’t thought of that. I also have neither horse hang out with them, yet…. moving to Germany and my neighbors there have two horses, so I feel an urgency to learn, to absorb what Steve and Klaus Hempfling, and their wonderful compatriots have been teaching us humans.

In terms of quick change, firming up, I get it. I am a dog trainer/behaviorist who deals with aggressive/anxious dogs. Absolutely fascinating the work you do with prey animals. So much similarity in dealing with predators. The common ground? The power of "space".

The coat on the horse is beautiful. And he is a big fella! Vinnie really wants an alpha, a leader. The owner doesn’t carry himself confidentially & wants to pet & stroke him a lot, an alpha doesn’t pet & stroke the other horses.

With respect, I will subscribe when you get a mic. Good that the camera has turned but I find it frustrating not to be able to hear fully. What is the cost of a mic a million dollars that so many have almost begged and yet no mic. Some have even suggested taking up a collection and buying one. I don't think they read enough comments to realize how many are frustrated by this lack of good sound. Please get a mic your content is too valuable to miss so much of it.

LOVE IT! LMAO Around 19 minutes into the video, Steve backs up the horse for the first time, then while he's explaining to us why "as soon as the horse back up" you stop asking him to back up, that he has to learn he can't come into hi circle" or something like this, the horse's reaction is priceless. It's as if he's trying to chew him out for it, like tell him off. lol Sorry I own siberian huskies and my dogs do a similar thing and are very vocal if i've told them to do something they didn't want to do. lollol

Finally ! A horseman from the UK who gets it while sorting a horse out AND it's owners / handlers !
I spent a long time in the UK teaching & training & even in some BHS facilities here in the US , horses are allowed bad behaviors & I was told that , " They're bold or Nappy - just keep out of harms way . "
    Such utter nonsense !
If a horse is dragging you about on the lead , biting at you , kicking around , etc ...
This translates DIRECTLY while one rides . Period .
No. We DO NOT use pain per se in our training but established EQUAL RESPECT - people if they're uneducated in schooling up a Nappy horse, forget that they DO have the bigger brain than the horse & as in the " Old Man & the Sea " ,
I as well have resolve & many tricks !
( I'm NOT saying that my skills are equal to yours by any means as we learn from one another . )
Thank you for showing CORRECT work & DISCIPLINE as a HORSEMAN does .
    Bravo !
    Post Script :
Unfortunately many orphan foals have extreme behavioral issues as we all know .
I'll watch to see if you stick around to feed this horse , etc ...-
I'm not sure that the owners are capable to carry on your work successfully .
Hopefully , these people can be your continued students .
People need a Mentor such as you !

Ive trained several orphaned horses after their (loving and caring) owners were too scared to proceed. Humans are small and easily pushed around. Get your best lead mare in the ring with you to reinforce what you are asking, less dangerous and gets the job done quickly. Your mare will do the majority of the work for you. (especially if the horse is really bratty) They lack respect, it must be learned.

    • @JudyHart1
