Andy McKee stopped by the Guitar World studio to play his song "Ebon Coast" from his new live album called Live Book. Check out this awesome performance and lesson!
This melody took me roughly 16-17 years to perfect and play on my own. I'm so glad I learned this but I think the best thing I've gained from learning this song is how much it has helped unlock things about my style that I didn't even know was possible until someone else had pointed it out. This song never gets old!
Most beautiful song ever on guitar. It took me a year to just cover it, and over a year period, I cannot count how many times I came back to this one. Still a long long way to go to cover your groove. Great song, great lesson here Andy.
Most of these brilliant players seem that way. Like Don Ross, Andy, Tommy Emmanuel..all of them seem approachable and WAY more modest than their talent should allow...his real talent is managing to be a fucking legendary player and still not have a Kanye West ego.
why not try? I took up guitar when I was 19 and I was able to play this song before a full year had passed. Just took dedication and practice.. like all things :) Hard to create pieces like these.. but easy to learn them if you're determined.
he was actually the most viewed person on youtube in the sites earlier years. he's not 'popular' perse but AFAIK he's been very successful in his endeavors
For me he is the top 1 finger style player in the world! he's chord pattern is unreal! the Michael Jordan in fingerstyle! the fluid and accuracy is in there!!
9 months in. Can play the whole song through, but I’m buzzing frets like a crazy person and I’m still struggling to pull off the more complicated chords in time -_-
RedeemedWhispers That's my issue, I just started a few days ago though. Got through the intro and most of the verse already, but that tricky barre chord is slowing me down a little. I'll get it, just need to keep playin. How'd you find the tapping part? I haven't gotten therr yet but it looks pretty intense aha
Stephen the tapping part is a lot of fun to play. Accuracy and getting the notes to sound out were my biggest problems. Playing in standard tuning on a semi-acoustic, and it doesn’t have the same response as a baritone guitar (not to mention it takes its toll on your fingers). Apart from that it still sounds really good. It’s all muscle memory though. If it seems intimidating, just learn the left hand, then when the left is second nature, introduce the right hand. Then the more you play it, the more accurate and in time you’ll become.
Awesome instructional video that I'll likely watch over and over again - why did the editor have to use such a harsh noise gate though? The silence / ambient tone cutting in and out sporadically defeats its purpose, and becomes a tad distracting. :/ Either way though, a great tutorial! :)
There are alot of subtle changes in this song since the original he played back then. Must say he is a genius, coz those changes he made are freaking awesome! :) I know coz i learned to play it XD
ANDYYYYY !!!! this has nothing to do with the original Ebon coast .... good but not great has the F***ng original.... It doesnt give that " Ebon Coast" Emotion that you gave us a few years ... still love you mon amis !
6:40 - 6:58 the absolute most important part. This is the key to unlocking your own musical potential.
I'm still blown away all these years later
murilo ninj I agree
Absolutely. One of my all time favorites.
2019

This melody is perfect, even after 8 years of listening to it for the first time.

Care to share what it is that person pointed out that is a part of your style? Thanks!
@hagitheduelist ability to utilize a variety of techniques on my own as well as being comfortable with syncopation
Most underrated guitarist till this day. He needs to be known!!
By far the best performance ever given by Andy on this song IMO
One of the world's most beautiful guitar compositions
I remember hearing this song for the first time years ago and its still as amazing as it was then today.

I would love to have a beer with Andy, he seems like a really humble guy.

Love Andy McKee. I remember the first time I heard Shanghai in college like 14 years ago. I’ve been watching his videos ever since. Truly amazing!
The outro in this session is the best. Andy nails it.
Andy, you're a boss... this should have millions of views
he was actually the most viewed person on youtube in the sites earlier years.

For my Father was my favorite, until I heard Ebon Coast...thank you for doing the video and sharing the process.
Excellent piece of music. Such a great lesson too, just straight down to business
Andy is amazing!
Thank you so much for the lesson, I'm trying it in my standard tuned guitar and is hard AF but worth it !
Amazing
Wow, I never would have guess Andy has small hands (I do too)! I really enjoyed seeing his personality show in this video. So chipper and upbeat!
What an awesome arrangement of tones. Nice work Andy!
2:52 has always been my favorite part
Sungha Jung has a song called Gravity, which was inspired by this piece by Andy. Take a listen, also another chill song
Man this is so awesome thanks so much
I’m almost able to play this but those little details here and there like the vibratos and sneaky pull offs.
he makes it look so easy
The best in the world
That is such a good song. I'm trying to learn it.
Still AMAZING!!! Nuff Said
Skyrim shirt! Lol Andy must be a tes fan! Nice!
2nd to "For my Father" in Andy McKee favorites.
Great sound! Tks.
Wooooww 😍
good save on 3:41
He did that on purpose
He has done that in many live ones, so totally intentional .
For me he is the top 1 finger style player in the world! he's chord pattern is unreal! the Michael Jordan in fingerstyle! the fluid and accuracy is in there!!
I don't understand who or why somone would thumbs down this, I mean why not just move on if ya don't like it.. wierd...
How long playing the guitar could it take for me to learn how to play this?
Wow... Andy is looking good and healthier! Nice....
Is that an acrylic nail? If so, that's brilliant.
Where can i get regular tabs or guitar pro tabs for this song.
can we play this on regular acoustic guitar or need a baritone guitar?
Sick!!
So glad im one of few that can play this accurately. much love to andy.
Do you need a mike to make the guitar sound loud enough?
muito bom andy adoro essa musica
Very nice reverb sounding.
Check out the version he did for Candyrat. It kicks ass!

open j....jlkjmj

BEADF#B
Is it possible to play this on regular guitar?
yes
Anyone knows which guitar this is?
well, this will take 345 years to learn.
Eric Siple Its actually not to hard to learn, will take a long time to perfect though. Took me about 2 months and a half to perfect drifting
Japalloo i agree not super hard to learn the notes but to make it sound like he does will take a while

What kind of guitar he used?
Anyone know what guitar he’s playing

Either way though, a great tutorial! :)
That outro is so damn groovy.
Any official tabs?
Andy is the hero of small hands
what mic?
좋아요!!
개 좋아.
u make it looks sooooo easy dude ...
Andy uses a tonewood amp here
10 years I saw him do this, I'm still trying to figure out those first couple notes ;)
Maybe learning reading tabs will help you
No matter what I try. When I try to make that click sound with my strings it sounds horrible :/
I've been playing this song for years but I need a baritone stat.
There are alot of subtle changes in this song since the original he played back then.
Must say he is a genius, coz those changes he made are freaking awesome! :)
I know coz i learned to play it XD
It is so hard to make it sound like he does
Yes, but can he play smoke in the water??
EvaLolaCookie Arellano It doesn't look like he possesses the necessary skill level ..
next reason lesson please
7:30 Fuck yes!, that tap makes all the difference, couldve easily left it out
I might learn the intro..
Adam Woodhams was able to leant intro quite easily. The first part of the verse not so much. Maybe bout half of it.
I learnt little wing when I was 15 but this is fucking impossible
I struggle on 1:05 for 2 years, that's not a joke.
You must really suck, no offense.
10:00
10:02
The original song is the best
if you can't play melody hearably, why don't you use your nails instead of your flesh? Really uncomfortable because of the low volumn of the melody
Reespekt 😋
Wtf is up with the sound constantly getting cut off? So annoying
this guitar...... OO
AhMayZing
The noise gate sucks
he gave up on the fanned fret it looks like
ANDYYYYY !!!! this has nothing to do with the original Ebon coast .... good but not great has the F***ng original.... It doesnt give that " Ebon Coast" Emotion that you gave us a few years ... still love you mon amis !
They used a terrible mic for recording this...
Very speed wtf ,please slow taping
dimy835 TH-cam has a speed settimg and it doesn't really affect the pitch that bad
