Jose Carreras was.a very underrated singer I had the privelidge of hearing him in the 70 , he was unbeatable then, and his attention to diction ,was unsurpassed ,He was a committed singer and true to the score .
Josep's birth date is December 5, 1946. All there is for accompaniment is a piano - and not the great Vincenzo Scalera playing either. The richness and power of his voice is so overwhelming, it grabs at the heart (and boggles the mind.) I bet there wasn't any 'close 2nd' in THIS contest.
He was so incredible in these early years. Very reminiscent of young Di Stefano. Unfortunately, he did not keep it up so well and I think his voice really started to deteriorate from wrong rep choices, but that's just speculation. Young Carerras is always a pleasure to listen to.
Have not and will not hear a greater lyric voice such as Carreras' again. For me, and I insist, for me, he's the best. Whou could sing like that at 24??? Very few, I believe. No wonder.
Most tenors turn pro at around age twenty four. Usually at the time of their debut they still have several years of learning yet to do. But a few tenors start younger. Bjorling was supporting his family with his voice at four. Carreras as I remember was on the big stage of the Liceo in opera when he was six.
@billyguns2 My all time favorite tenor, the last great tenor of the 20th century. Let's hope the human race doesn't stop producing great artists for generations to come.
@jerrya1979: It's been some time since you wrote your comment, and I fully agree. JC's voice is everlasting! I just saw/attended his most recent concert in Bogotá, and I absolutely loved it.

I agree - the last truly great tenor. Even the 'famous' ones these days are not a patch on Maestro Carreras.

anche lui non mi ha mai convinta. Per favore, niente accostamenti al grande Pippo.
guido greco E vero !
A mio modesto parere il suo erede oggi è FLOREZ
non lo conosco.
