Yes, the EOS M from 2012 is still my favourite mirrorless camera for RAW Video. The colours, the look, the adaptability to lenses and adapters, the raw functions all make this such a great and fun camera to use. Here are my current and best settings for ML RAW on the EOS M using MCM Rewire 1080 Mode & 2.5K RAW Mode. Enjoy!

Thank you for this video. I'm looking into this camera and have Nikon glass. I'm not to familiar with Canon mounts but I believe this is an EOS M mount. The adapters I'm see say EF-EFS
Yes EF-m Mount. So for Canon EF/EF-s Lens, you need EF to EF-m or EOS M.

Running through the menu's and short recording clips highlights one of this camera biggest drawbacks which is the abysmal battery life. I'm guessing you run a slew of batteries but im suprised i haven't seen you use a small battery bank.
No, I'm really fine with batteries. Only one battery used here. Perhaps mainly due to the fact that I mainly use adapted lenses which are mostly manual.
you can use a dummy battery with a powerbank.

I'm also using a manual lens and only have the camera on when recording but find running time insufficient. I'm awaiting my dummy battery (to connect to power bank) so let's hope that resolves it.
Dummy battery is amazing. Most of my short films on this channel are pretty much only shot using a maximum of two to three batteries. The powerbank will help for longer duration shoots! :)

It's completely up to you. In mlv app I usually upscale to 2.8k or 4k and then export as 4k in Davinci or Final Cut Pro X.

Excellent video, this channel needs more views. I'm a little confused about MCM rewire, though. How is 1736x976 functioning as 1080p? I thought you had to have 1920x1080 to be shooting full HD, but this is about 100 pixels shy of that. And by "continuous shooting" in MCM rewire, do you mean you can actually keep filming RAW until the battery dies/card fills up? It's pretty nuts that this thing can manage more than a few seconds at all...

MCM Rewire stands for Movie Crop Mode Rewire
The Magic Lantern Team rewired the Normal Canon 1080p Mode to bring a RAW resolution of max 1735x976 which looks Waaay better than the upscaled looking 1080p on the EOS M. This is due to the limitation of the Camera Class, being an SD only with a limit in speed. Magic Lantern Canon cameras like the 5D Mark II and III use CF Cards which are able to get more resolution. The 5D II is close to 1920x1080, but the 5D Mark III is the only one that can shoot 1920x1080 RAW.
It's continuous until the battery dies, or the SD Card fills up! :)

I had no idea something so cheap and portable could get THIS level of image quality, currently. The dynamic range from RAW is anyone's guess, but it looks pretty great in your various tests.

thanks as always zeek. really interesting and useful. can you consider doing a video about magic lantern GLITCHES? I've noticed a lot of times, something in the view looks different or something's not working and I have to reboot the camera once or twice to get functionality back. but I don't know if that's just mo or if other people or you are running into issues like this. I love magic lantern on the $150 camera but it would be really useful to know what some of the downsides are so we can know what to look out for.
personally, I'm having a really hard time getting autofocus to work reliably. from session to session, I'm encountering it always behaving and looking (in the gui) a little different so I'm not sure if I actually should use autofocus or not.

Autofocus on the early Eos m cameras have never been reliable, even with a really good Canon lens. For glitches, always do battery pull when necessary, turn the camera on, off, then on again. If you stick to the right settings without changing a lot of things, you'll be good to go. I have shot magic lantern raw 4 hours straight and it s been really good with at least one battery pull that takes less than 5 seconds. Thanks 🎥😎👍

The 700D is nice but it doesn't interest me atm. I like the option of using Speedboosters and C mount lenses. If I find one cheap then maybe.

Wow, that was soooo helpful in understanding the cameras real word limitations. Personally I would have been really dissapointed getting the camera and realizing that I only had 5 seconds. But after listening to you and your thoughts I can see where you have reasonable expectations and if I had the camera I would be quite happy. I have an M50 myself. Would you be able to do a side by side comparison on pushing the M50 to it's limits with Magic Lantern against the EOS M? I'd love to see how close the EOS M is and then also compare the video quality with the same lens. Thanks! You'll be at 10k subs in no time :D

I think the EOS M Raw and M50 work really great together. The M50 is a great VLOG/TH-cam Camera for quick stuff. Really enjoy it. I'll see if I can do a comparison. I know as a fact the raw from the Eos m is better though, but I still really love the M50 for the quick ease of use. Haha...cheers 😎

Great as usual! Like the warm tone in the video from 2:37 to 3:43,any lut used this time?
No LUTs for them. They were exported from MLV App as Davinci DNG Uncompressed files and then base corrected, saturation lifted and that's it. The warm tones is probably mainly due to the Takumar 35mm f2 Yellowing :)
Thank you Zeek, and how about working with DNGs in Final Cut, what 's the difference to the workflow that color correct first in MLV and then edit in Final Cut?
@@yijintimmt DNGs don't work with final cut. Mainly use them in Davinci and then export as uncompressed. Then I place them in Final Cut Pro, order them, done!

When you export as DNG, nothing graded in MLV App will be applied. Everything is graded in Davinci.
Davinci I feel is only good for 2.5K Mode, anamorphic mode and X3 crop mode due to no aliasing. You can apply powergrade in Davinci which is cool to get punchier colours from the DMG files. I still grade in mlv app though. DNG exports in mlv app are the quickest.

Sounds good Louis! To get a 28mm equivalent, all you do is divide the focal length by the Eos m crop factor. So 28mm divide 1.6x crop ~ 17mm. The Canon 10-18mm may be a good choice.

In MLV app, enable 3x3 chroma smooth. Should be at the top right panel "3X3".

Do you mean the 2.5K Crop Mode? It looks more flat like micro four thirds, but the resolution and quality is very good. Wide lenses help. Like maybe a Canon 10-18mm. Thanks 😎👍

In MCM [Movie Crop Mode] Rewire Mode 1080, no additional crop. It is the original 1.6x Canon Crop. So all good! Other modes will have additional crops.
Ah that's great. So a 22mm lens will essentially be a 35mm in MCM rewire mode. Unlike in 2.5K mode where it zooms even further.

Hi, Lately Have been running into issues with 14bit lossless in mcm rewire. If I film a very complexe scene i.e. very high dynamic range scene and a cherry tree with lot’s of tiny flowers I get some cluncky errors showing on screen, i feel like the processing power is having hard time keeping up compressing too complexe images. I wonder if same have had similar issues.

I tried to reproduce it today to filming the eos m screen with my phone but lighting condition have changed and I could not reproduce. I'm getting some assert logs related to the compression. I'll send some screenshots when I can reproduce it correctly.
What mode were you using? 2.5k?
Zeek no just mcm rewire 1080p in 16:9. That’s the strange part as it should almost always be continuous recording. My guess is that i’m stressing out the cpu somehow in this very particular situation. Other explanation is : that tree might be cursed xD.
I have used mL on the EOS M for 2 Years or more and have never experienced this. Uninstall it and then install it again using either of the two options in the link description of my YT Video.
I came from the installation tutorial, bought a new SD card and it worked perfectly fine, thanks to your reply. But then I couldn't find the "data format" anywhere in the latest version of ML. What does it do actually? And how will it affect my videos without that setting?
You mean the modules section? They're already loaded within the ML Build so we don't have to keep enabling them etc...no need for SD hack either, it's all there.

I have that build in the description on my Google Drive. The latest build in the repository doesn't have this option as the lossless is apparently the same as the uncompressed 14-bit.

Yes you can, in mlv app you need to enable the dual iso setting.
Hey Zeek, I've been considering on buying the Eos M but I don't have the budget to buy any extra lenses. Do you have any shots of ML Raw using the 15-45 canon kit lens? I have used the 15-45mm on the Eos m, but got rid of it asap....
The 7artisans 25mm f1.8 is waaay better. I didn't like the quality coming from the kit lens.
What do you edit the raw photos in? Colours looked similar to your videos...
Pretty much just Lightroom, no LUT, just manual correction/grade...

After saw your videos, today I finally tried the ML in my EOSM, I really like the video! Just have one question, why the videos don't have sound? I had a rode mic connect to the eos m, is there any thing that I need to set? in the left top of the screen only show Immortal in green, dont have the mic levels
On the raw video tab (tab 3 in menu), go down towards the bottom where there is the sound option. Enable it if it is disabled.

Depends on what lens you youse, the IQ and sharpness. For 1080 probably 20% and 2.5K Mode 50%

slowly getting things to work. When i try to record a video in RAW the little green box goes orange and then red as soon as there is movement on the screen. I'm using a Samsung Evo Select 64gb card, it says it can write at 100mb/sec but i'm not sure what is going on. Sometimes when I try to record RAW the preview goes black and white and pixelated and very choppy. Things start getting glitchy and i need to restart the camera and then go back to the 8bit mode to be able to film and take pics.
Your card unfortunately is terrible. I had that one, don't use it anymore, screws up everything. Use the Sandisk Extreme PRO, much better!

You mentioned that this camera has similar hardware to the 650D, but I usually only see people getting these types of results with the EOS M. Would ML be able to get similar results from a 650D or 700D at this point since they have the same processor and sensor as the EOS M? I'm looking for a nice used cheap stills camera and also one I can get some quality video from for the money. EOS M is a great value but I'd love to have the features of a 650 or 700D as well without buying both. Thanks.
The Canon 700D is the most similar. If you need a flip screen then this is the one.

Hey Zeek, thanx for posting this video. I upgraded to the latest version of ML a few weeks back, before that I had the Jun 2019 version installed and it didn't have any issues with the 2.5K video and above for a few minutes of recording; but after I did this upgrade I noticed a lot of frame skipping and not having a propper comunication with my external monitor. I'm looking for the previous version of ML to try it out some more and test if this issues continue on the previous version but can't find it. Do you happen to know where to find it? It's not on Danne Photo anymore... :( Thanx again mate!

Perhaps you have a stable version? I tried your assembly, it’s very strange when I switch from 1/50 to 1/100 and so on - the crop factor x3 turns on and the raw video turns off. Also in 48fps mode the image is not proportional. for some reason. This is very frustrating ((Maybe I'm doing something wrong ...?
Never experienced this before. I would do a fresh install from Danne's latest build for the EOS M. I'm making a new video for that build and will upload it for download. The high fps are slightly stretched vertically in the live view. It's just how it is. Go to customised buttons in the 3RD movie tab and you can disable X3 crop selection.

It's difficult, no is probably the answer. 2.5k is achieved of you press that magnification icon on Canon Cameras which zooms in the live view. The magic lantern team have created 2.5k raw out of that mode, so the zoom in live view has to be done in order to achieve that resolution.
I just focus on my subject, press info to see my real shot framing, press info again and then I record.
@zeek so every time, after restart camera do I need to go settings first or it starts to shoot after any restart wit all of the settings? Also, I am using the kit lens, and autofocus and some times it couldn't focus at the needed time, and some times if I need to shot none case objects it focusing on whatever :( how to avoid it?
Just start shooting 😎👍 The kit lens aren't the best for AF. Use one shot AF, not Servo.

@@ZeekEOSZ Would you say MCM rewired 1080 upscaled to 4k has better detail than 4k/4.5k? What makes me hesitate with 2.5k is the increased crop.
Mcm upscaled looks better. I use a 12-28mm tokina on a speedbooster and so the crop in 2.5k isn't big anymore. Depends on what you're shooting. The anamorphic mode has a nice look.

Right, thanks llia :) I thought the CR2 files Canons' Raw Image files are used to store uncompressed image data taken from the sensor. But yes, didn't know the photos took a form of lossless compression..
I tried installing Magic Lantern and I cannot see those options in movie mode.
Check my latest video settings. The builds are much newer now and as re in my opinion way better.

I like the EOS M better because of the size and how you can attach a speedbooster for a more shallower depth of field and better lowlight performance. My Sigma 30mm f1.4 becomes an f1.0
Dear Zeek - I'm using the kit lens 18-55 with all your settings but in Full daylight the video is over exposed I tried setting the aperture to F22 with no manual aperture control I can't seem to work out whats going on - I'm sure you would be able to set it correct in a second any advice would be appreciated. cheers
You need an ND filter. I use Fotga Variable Nd and they work like a charm in fixing exposure in daylight. Don't stop the aperture down past f11 as the quality will get worse. Just use an ND filter.

Thx for great sharing! I wonder if the ML version you use ( have downloaded) have the focus rack / stack? Have used a 2017build a while without this feature. Have also tested a version from Danne early this year - with the rack/stack - but I struggle with some lack of stability.
Yes it has rack focus and focus stacking for use with AF lenses although I have not tried it. Cheers!
Zeek I have tried focus stacking, and I finally made it work (technically). Next step is to test it in a macro setting. My ML use is for macro and interval.

No problem. Honestly, the 7Artisans 25mm f1.8 or Meike 35mm f1.7 would be my first choice. Then Nikkor lenses 28mm f2.8 AI, 50mm F2 Ai, or Canon FD Lens.

Any idea how to enable Automatic exposure mode for video? Auto iso doesnt work with raw. Only way now I make use of it is having separete sd card and record without magic lantern
Press "info" tab until dashboard appears. Top left change the camera icon form manual exposure to auto exposure.

Hi Zeek! Came across your channel and watched a bunch of your EOS M Raw videos. I'm wondering, why do you choose to use to use the M despite having the Pocket 4K? It seems like you get limited record times, lower resolution, more compression, and it is not as stable. Other than the form factor and sensor size I see no advantage to it (not considering cost). Just wondering if I'm missing something. Thank you for putting these videos together!
Hi Eric. I just love the colours, the sensor size and MLV App where you can transcoded the RAW Files to BMDFil, Alexa Log, SLog, etc...You can do so much with the Eos m, 2.5k, 3k raw, X3 crop mode for C Mount lenses and in general it's a cheap portable camera to use, I just enjoy it. The P4K I also use in my own time and do a lot of tests but not for TH-cam as much. I also love the sensor size of the Eos M.
Hey ZEEK! thanks for what you do and your way of teaching! I have a question. I don’t need to record higher than 1080p-24fps. Day time.....so I did the video settings like you have it.... halfway press shutter then info so it shows exact framing and it records BUT when I preview the footage in my folder after pressing the play arrow button next to the MENU BUTTON.... I go to the footage recorded and it’s playing it frame by frame and looks a little discolored? Is this suppose to happen? Like since it’s magic lantern I can’t watch a preview of what I recorded or is a possible setting placed wrongly? THANKS ZEEK!
If it plays back frame by frame, in the middle screen of playback select "all" instead of "exact" this will skip more frames.
You are recording raw video straight from the sensor and is capturing frames per second which is what you are seeing in playback, so it's not like h.264.
Once you put it in MLV App, make the app size smaller to get quicker FPS Playback. Cheers! 😎👍

You need MLV App to convert the files to DNG, MP4, ProRes etc...up to you.

The app is MLV App, it's like Photoshop but for video conversion, converting the Raw .MLV files to any format you choose. .MP4 or ProRes are good otions, DNG will export quicker and is good for Davinci or Adobe Premiere.

No problem. You must be using an all manual lens. Go to the Canon Menu / Custom Functions. Enable "shoot without lens" or release without shutter. That should do the trick! 😉👍🎥

Hello Mr.Zeek. In MCM 1080 mode there always have "purple frames" you know , the glitch frames. Do you know this condition? I wanna know how to solve that problem....
I have never experienced it with MCM 1080 mode. you be using the high 46/48fps mode which is a bit of a strain on the camera due to the higher frame rate.

Do you know if that 10-Bit card hack reduces raw filesizes at all? Thats what I would want to use it for on the M2.
Haven't really noticed the file size difference. 14 bit lossless is as low as you can get with you M2 file size. It's the best option. The 10 bit helps with the higher resolution modes such as 2.5k raw.
ok so which modes on this camera with ml offer continuous recording above 1920x1080 resolution ? It's not super clear from watching the videos which modes offer this if any
It says during the vid...if you shoot 2.5K, you need to lower it to around 2.3K or so to get continuous. Pretty much true for any higher res than the normal mode 1736x976. You can either lower the resolution till it shows green signalling continuous or change the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 2.35:1, 2:1 etc...

Yes you can get more detail out of the RAW Capsule when you upscale it. It's crazy. I'll be posting a new settings video possibly tomorrow for the EOS M and the New Build, the weather has been crazy :)

You need to be in manual mode, change from Eos m dashboard. Or ml tab 3 customised buttons, change ISO options.
i downloaded and install the build you use but everything seems to be broken on my eos m. The camera freezes turns off and is sometimes uncontrolable

Uninstall it, and download the build in the second link in the description and then follow these settings. That should help, otherwise I haven't experienced this. Hope that works 😎👍

No definitely not the SD, I use 64GB and 128GB. Both work fine.
Hi Zeek. Is it still your impression that 14 bit holds a little more detail than 14 bit lossless?
Hey Paul, I tested the two thoroughly last week on my new 4K Display Screen (It's Top Notch). They're pretty much identical now Lossless vs. Uncompressed. The data rate on 14-bit compression is higher than the lossless which should result in more detail, but there isn't a difference even when colours were pushed to the max on my 4k display.
@@ZeekEOSZ Interesting. No noticeable difference on a 4K monitor is a good result for lossless. The file sizes on the 5Diii are 3GB per minute for the normal 14 bit (~ 8-9min on a 32GB card). I haven't yet noticed the difference but Glenn from EOSHD is sure his lossless footage is slightly less detailed than the original 14 bit on the Nightly Builds from 2018. Surely the lossless is still good enough.

Well if people aren't going to notice it on TH-cam, then Lossless is pretty much the way to go! The 5DII will hopefully soon be able to shoot Lossless RAW. But yeah, with the 5D Mark III, the lossless option is going to save a lot of card space 😎👍
I would argue that since it’s lossless compression there is definitely no difference between both. If you would run a programmatic comparison (i.e ffmpeg ssim or something like that )between two identical clips they would give you 100% exact similarity. Now that’s not possible in practice because you would need 1 unique camera to record lossless and uncompressed at the same time. But that’s what lossless compression means fundamentally.
Yeah exactly. It's such a great option. If it wasn't for lossless, there would be no continuous Raw on these cameras.
I have no luck running any ML build on my EOS M and I can't figure why. LiveView glitches out like crazy and even menus can't be navigated properly. I also can't see the modules tab... I got so high hopes for EOS M after seeing your videos, but seems like I won't be joining the ride.
What SD Card r u using?
The modules are automatically installed, so no need to enable them anymore...
@@ZeekEOSZ Ok, so no module tab now, I understand. My SD card is SanDisk Extreme Pro 170 MB/s. I tried official build from ML website, but I can't get more than 7 seconds of RAW recording. I benchmarked the card and it got to 35 MB/s... I don't know why. With your build I get lots of errors, freezes and crashes. Also no settings I input seem to be saved, as I get prompt for preset every time I start the camera.

This video should help. It's the latest settings. You just assign each custom mode to your liking. The build I use is in the description. Make sure to uninstall ML First and format in camera.

Your card is most likely fake no being able to reach the labelled speeds. I've come across this before.

On the 5D2, max is 48fps. But it isn't worth it 👍 it has a big crop. Better off with the Canon 5D3 for 60fps.

You pretty much just download the folder and copy the three files onto an SD card. Switch to the photo icon on top of the camera and select firmware update. Done.

Pretty much the same thing. Mine just has the 14-bit uncompressed video option as well vs. only 14-bit lossless.
Zeek, what is the general temperature range that your Eos M sees? How hot is too hot?
I've used this camera on the hottest days during summer with 2.5K raw and 1080 Mode, no issues at all. It's not a Sony ;) Hot would be 50 Degrees/122 Fahrenheit. Never reached it.

The EOS M is too capable. I can do a short film with the Eos m which is my plan. May have to be limited to no actors looking at the current situation. 😎👍

Don't know what a USB hack is. As long as you have a fast card e.g. SanDisk Extreme PRO or Lexar Pro 1000x. Don't know there name of the tune, it was a random royalty free song.

Check your aperture and ensure the settings are the same. The link is the exact build I used here, but not all the same settings. Copy the information in this video for mcm rewire 1080 and that should be good to go!

How long is 2.5k video time?
It's shown in this video. 16:9 2.5K RAW is like 5 seconds, 2.35:1 aspect ratio will get you longer record times plus lowering the resolution - 15 seconds to continuous.

2.5K with 2.35:1 can be continuous with SanDisk Extreme PRO 32/64/128GB.
If you record 2K-2.3K it can be continuous, but full resolution will be about 8-15 seconds.

Is it possible to shoot still images at x5 or x10 magnification with magic lantern installed, or do we have to rely on just taking a video with FPS override set to like 4 FPS, or something?
Also, it appears using the November2020 build you provided in the description from your 31 minute video does not allow taking pictures when switching to h.246, unless I am doing something wrong.
