I think what is so great is how respectable Wolfey's approach to his audience can be. He's explicitly stated before that he avoids cursing on stream and the like to make it more child-friendly, especially considering the original targeted age demographic of pokemon as a game, yet he never downplays his audience as children but rather expects a high degree of maturity and intelligence from his community. People find appealing to both kids and adults as hard because they think that you have to either baby kids or talk and joke about illicit or edgy topics with adults whereas there really isn't a huge line between the two. Big props to Wolfey as always for his ability to simply provide universally acceptable entertainment and allow everyone to just have a good time.

I totally agree. And the youtuber/streamer's personality gets reflected in the chat. Asshole streamers or trolls will have a lot of troll chat and haters, whereas genuinely nice streamers usually have nice wholesome chats.

I think the thing you are pointing out actually makes more sense for the older generations.
If we think about it, the people growing up in the early 90s to 2004 watched/played shows animes whatever which would be considered "not good" for children today. But they were actually really the opposite. They were healthy for them. These times children werent thought of as stupid and retarded, no they knew kids were smart and could understand harder concepts (obviously dumbing it down a bit).
Today they treat the kids like idiots, which is seen all over the media. One prominent example would be the new star wars movies (8,9 especially) and also the animes created today, where short term laughs are traded for long term charakter development.

💚 unfortunately internet randos can really get under your skin, especially if you have legions of people relentlessly demeaning and reducing you. With randos I guess there isn’t much to do, but if you’re able to have a constructive conversation about why their actions are harmful, it can go a long way

    • @AuraComedy
      @AuraComedy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The thing about racism and bigotry too though is that it doesn't always happen overtly and will, more often than not, occur in subtle, "behind the scenes" ways where the offenders have plausible deniability. Like, the magnitude of people saying horrible crap on the internet is definitely higher, but if someone is saying horrible crap on the internet you know that it's because they can get away with it. There's always someone behind a computer screen, and in real life, they probably think some of those things, but act on it on different, more subtle ways. That's why you don't see as much overt harassment in person.
People know how to hide their hatred in this day and age. Or they will deny, gaslight, blame other people for their actions. That's why it's so important to openly support marginalized communities & also openly speak out against harassment, bigotry, etc. consistently. Anyways, not trying to go on a tangent here, but yeah, I work in education, so you wouldn't believe how many people will claim that something is not a problem and/or be dismissive of it just because they don't "see it", or, rather, will not do anything until it becomes a big enough issue to draw attention. OR they'll pretend that what they are doing isn't bad because "they said so". It becomes frustrating when people will only speak out when it becomes convenient for them.
But yeah, props to you for openly supporting other people. So many people will demand "proof" or convincing that bigotry & discrimination are persistent and pervasive issues before raising a finger, which is equally as frustrating and annoying on so many levels.

  • @AuraComedy
    @AuraComedy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I appreciate Wolfe for being able to talk about racism and discrimination and also address the pervasive and problematic notions of: "oh well I don't believe racism exists anymore". Like, I can say personally that hearing stuff like that is one of the most frustrating things to hear, so I am glad to hear a content creator actually address it. Racism (and other forms of discrimination) are literally life and death issues (because yes, allowing bigotry to go unchecked in any form usually leads to violence) for the people affected by them.
Just because someone does not hear about it does not mean that it "does not exist", only that you are privileged and/or fortunate enough to not have been victimized or targeted by bigotry. It's 99% of the time marginalized communities who are speaking out about these issues, so when somebody chooses NOT to believe them, then of course they are not going to hear about it. I can say, from personal experience as an Asian American, this was, and still is, continuing to happen in the US. Hate crimes against Asian Americans only got media attention in March after the mass shootings in Atlanta, but I can remember hearing about dozens of incidents of hate crimes and harassment happening months prior to March 2021.
I can also say that it was very frustrating to see all the awareness and attention around anti-Asian discrimination essentially evaporate a few weeks after the attack in March. Because yes, absolutely hate crimes are still occurring everyday, and, yes, people have died too. I can also say that anti-Asian racism has a history in the US (only speaking on the US because I live there) and existed far before the year 2020 (IE: the murder of Vincent Chin, suicide of Danny Chen, mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII, etc.). If someone is not personally a target of the racism they are speaking on, and isn't listening to the people who ARE personally affected by racism, then of course they are not going to understand, nor understand the gravity of the issue. I imagine this is the case for other marginalized communities too.
And to bring the point home: what benefit is there to the denial of racism in the first place? It's my firm belief that every human being deserves to feel safe and treated with respect and dignity and that we all have the responsibility to help each other out in need. In my opinion, someone who wants to deny that other human beings are suffering and being treated unfairly, is either doing so because they are either the perpetrators themselves, or because they are trying to skimp out on their responsibility to their fellow human beings. We've all got a role to play in making the world a better place IMO, and people denying that is unfathomable to me.
As Wolfe said what really is the worse case scenario? What downside is there to really trying to make the spaces & communities people are apart of feel safer and more comfortable? There really isn't any, except for the people out there who believe they are entitled to harm others, and I personally WOULD NOT want to share a space with someone like that.

hi, I agree 100% with what you meant by this comment and don't want this to be read as a criticism of you (because it's not), but as a trans woman I've got a couple of tips about how to make your language more inclusive
"trans" is an adjective not a noun and, when people call us "trans" as a noun rather than "trans people" or "trans women", "trans men" etcetera, it can sound dehumanising (in the same way it sounds dehumanising when someone refers to black people as "blacks")
another small thing is that, by listing trans people as a separate category to women, it sounds like you're implying that trans women aren't 'real' women - I'm sure this wasn't your intention, as your comment was clearly kind and supportive of anti-discrimination, but a better way of phrasing that would be something along the lines of "where women and other marginalised genders feel less welcomed"
again, I'd like to repeat that I do not say this to criticise you but to help you learn about inclusive language - you clearly care about trans rights among other social justice issues, so I want to help you express that in the most inclusive possible way 😁 thank you for reading if you got this far, I hope you have a nice rest of your day!

Im probably trans myself, but i am still learning.
For me personally doesnt do much, but then again i have no issues with people refering to me as whites or as trans. or blacks as blacks
In the end their just words, and i am of the personal oppinion that people should look at the usage of words with less hostility.
People these days feel very quickly attacked for no reason just because people say things wrongly which makes me personally sad.
I do fully agree with you that trans woman are just woman and trans man are just man. But sadly the mayority of the population of the world doesnt see it like that.
But i personally also feel that Transpeople should try to be open and welcoming towards the ignorant because alot of people do not understand the way we think or feel.
On top of this english language is not my native langauge
And in the netherlands we can make about every word a noun and every noun in to a verb so our langauge is very open and because of that i do the same in english.
Just saying trans is just faster then saying transpeople as long as the person itself is aware of the meaning it should be fine right?

I just wanted to come here and say I really appreciate seeing someone with a sane point of view.
Just one more tidbit if you're one who doesn't believe these people are being discriminated against:
    idk
one thing that was hammered into my head in elementary was treating folks the way you want to be treated. So I believe everyone should treat eachother with respect at face value, just two people not knowing how each other are. Obviously that situation gets a little dicey when you factor in criminals and whatever, but for the most part, just be kind, or indifferent, I suppose that's alright too.
I see so many arguments in TH-cam comments sections immediately resort to insults on the first response, before either person gets even a small taste of eachother (don't take that the wrong way).
All this is what's made me so sensitive to what I say or do, I'll often apologize for little things, even the most tiny miniscule things, all because people will generalize you and treat you a certain way if they believe you align a certain way.
That being said, sorry for the wall of text, I just wanted to say
    tl;dr be kind

Thank you for taking being such a solid voice of reason and using your voice to address touchy subjects in the gaming community that need extreme help. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about barriers facing women and POC and this kind of stuff makes me want to tune and support and spread your content even more. Well done sir!

I’m definitely not in any marginalized group, but it’s still great to see Wolfey being so inclusive and thoughtful. Thanks for creating a safe and welcoming space in your community!

You’re awesome, Wolfey. I really like your content, I didn’t know any of your beliefs on inclusion before now, but I feel so welcome in your community. All of your thoughts are very based and you’re good at articulating them. Keep being a legend

Wolfey: we need to stick up for women, POC, and we should reflect on our own behavior.
