I changed my approach to STREET PHOTOGRAPHY for a week. This is what happened.

  • Sometimes, I need to give the visual side of my brain something else to think about when shooting on the street. I do this by changing the way I approach things. In this video, we take a look at a recent week of experimentation and how and why I changed my approach to street photography.

Photography is whatever you want it to be. It's yours. Personally, I really like your videos, style, and try to recreate them.
If the rude person commenting on your videos doesn't like them, I don't understand why he continues to watch them. Baffling.

I really love your creative endeavours. Especially the color experiment was really fruitful. Excellent decision to photograph something else than your typical b/w street scenes with all their gestures and spatial relationships. Using a M9P with your special colour sauce recipe helps, obviously. The image of the gentleman with the yellow shirt and straw head was a true success. Seeing the footage of you closing in I was wondering what you would come up with. Kudos! The deep blacks in a lot of these colour images remind me of Carravgio's chiarascuro technique (sorry to make you look up things on wikipedia 🤣).
Despite all your technical explanations and visual experiments - I guess you know you are doing the work of a cultural historian. Blackpool and it's amusement parks are really telling a lot about British socienty in the 2020s. You could apply the same visual style in Singapoore or Belgium but you always come back to these locations and manage to take photographs of people on the streets without making fun of them like a certain British photographer colleague of yours seems to be doing from a middle class point of view.

I use my phone for my street photography - wide is great - I often crop my photos as well - obviously the quality is not as good as a digital Slr etc !
Mono with phone is nice ! though I shoot mostly in colour .
I like my film camera as well and shoot mostly colour neg films - with the odd B&W.
Portra is my favourite colour film.
    Nice work !

I usually shoot street with my Ricoh GR3x, 40mm or with my Z8 with 50mm and 80mm f1.8. I also got some fantastic street shots in Indonesia with my 100-400. Tack sharp and beautiful boke. Range focusing on the Z8 is a breeze. Use back button focus, manually focus to a focal range in the viewfinder eg 3m the leave back button focus alone and use the shutter button only which is now loked at 3m. Oh, I also use my 16-30mm f4 for street. Typically locked at 30mm.

28mm & 40mm here, I can't imagine using 21mm. I have been used to colour but more recently have been trying more black & white - when I get it right I prefer it.

Some great captures there Jeff. I love shooting street in Blackpool, it’s great for colour captures, especially along the sea front around the arcade fronts. You really really should try the 90mm focal length and do a video on that. It would be interesting to see you tackle it full on. Pushing yourself outside of a comfort zone and discussing why some shots work and some don’t. Might quiet that odd critic and their comments at the beginning ;)

A challenge is always good but all your pictures are fantastic, whether b&w (my preference too) or colour. I notice that you often shoot from the hip. Would another challenge be to always raise the camera to your eye, even when using the 28mm rather than a 90mm? That’s how I tend to work with my Q2, but then again my images are mediocre so perhaps that’s were I’m going wrong!

@@WalkLikeAlice The horizontal angle of view of a single human eye to the nose is slightly less than 90 degrees, although we see through a 135 degrees arc but the brain concentrates on the central portion which is roughly 90 degrees for both eyes .The AOV of a 21 mm lens is about the same. I have no idea how it has become popular to claim that the 50 mm lens is the equivalent of the human eye vision ?

Photography is an art form and the way the artist presents their work is an individual choice and does not need anyone's approval. They wouldn’t say these things face to face. They need the safety of an anonymous account and keyboard.

Great video, as usual from you. Buy, those wide angle shots re just childish snaps! Never been a fan of wide angle photography. I love compression, solitude, cinematic dark mood, bokeh. I love directed and previsualized composition. I want to be observer not interfeere with peoeple. Not to mention that all those images with clear faces of people in my country re illegal without permission. So...wide angle..not for me.

Telelenses are the last resort in street photography, shy press reporters use them. Too much children in this video for me, not conveying any deeper meaning. And stiil, they're part of life.Your dog is cute.

It’s a popular seaside resort in the middle of the school holidays. Kids are everywhere. Tbh I hadn’t even noticed how many of the shots were of kids. They are just part of life here.

@@WalkLikeAlice Yes, in street photography, you either wait for a preconceived composition to take shape at the selected spot, or you roam the streets and make use of whatever life (gulls, cars in the rain, janitors with brushes etc.) throws at you. What I meant was that children can be both expressive and nondescript as subjects.
