    If you want your city to feel European I believe the 2 most important things are : 1. make the city circular, from the inside out. Historically European cities have grown radially outwards from a city center. 2. Make the roads organic. As the city grows outwards it grows as needed, meaning it has a very organic feel as to how the roads are placed and all. Bonus... Having a highway cut through your city is the opposite of european. Highways were built around cities as either ring roads for bigger cities or just pass-through highspeed roads. Your city feels (as of now) preplanned and very grid based. This is my personal opinion

    • @flyingpiggie979
      @flyingpiggie979 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Claudio Jaramillo The grid isn’t alien to Europe. Even the Romans used grid systems, and it had been used in a lot of “new” European towns and cities from as far a back as the 12-1300’s. Even the Georgian town I grew up in was built right from the start in the 1600’s with a right angled grid design.

    • @SkateGeneva
      @SkateGeneva 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Blinkysaurus Rex most of the places that did use a grid based design from the beginning were very flat places (the Netherlands for example). Not a small city in the middle of a valley like this one

    • @OkstadOo
      @OkstadOo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Necroposting, but grids aren't alien to Europe as said. In Norway (which has a geography that looks very much like this map) several cities have a section called "Kvadraturen", due to their grid based layout. Oslo, Kristiansand and Namsos all have districts featuring heavy gridding.

    "Nydal" in swedish is "new-valley" and I think it's a similar meaning in norwegian. In swedish it would be pronounced like "Nü-dall", not sure how to explain and I don't know if you want to pronounce it the english or swedish way :) I'm very excited for this series either way :D

    • @Semonjes
      @Semonjes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Means the exact thing in Norwegian, yep! Also a very common place here in western Norway, and then also a very common surname :)

    • @matsv201

      As far as i can se there is at least 3 semi large vilages called nydal. One in norway, one in Sweden and one in Finland. Of cause, part of Finland speak swedish making it a logical name there to

    • @Semonjes
      @Semonjes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah. I tried searching on Google maps too but it doesn't show all the varieties, and not smaller places. There's a part of my hometown called "Nydalen" as well as in Oslo, among others, but it doesn't show :P

    Reading "Nydal": sounds norwegian.
    Sees the landscape: looks norwegian.
    Not very generic so far, very norwegian biase. xD
    Also i can't really imagine what a generic european police would look like. They look very different wherever you go. I mean, Germany (except for bavaria) started using blue instead the old green colour 15 years ago, to make it more easy to identify police all across Europe. But you still need to decide on the design of one country though.
    Can't wait for episode 2! :)

    • @Hoehlenmaensch
      @Hoehlenmaensch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also: Is there a chance this means "New Valley"? Sounds like that to me. Would be a bit ironic for an island city. :D

    • @MrUptonguy

    This is 100% Norwegian. From the name, to the fjord landscape. Nydal is a real place in Norway. It means new valley. The landscape looks almost identical to the islands northwest of Ålesund, where is not too far from where I live.

    Before I get too involved into this video and forget... again. Thank-you and the other builders for the beautiful, imaginative and innovative cities you've created.
    I've recently started and have created a "testing" city/map to learn how to play and create elements, examine assets, mods, etc... that I've seen used and want to incorporate.
    I hope my imagination hasn't gotten rusty from lack of need, so it's time to let it roam around up there for concepts and gain inspiration from the cities I'm seeing. ;-)

Its a Swedish made loco that is heavily used in both Norway and Sweden that have been exported in quite large numbers to the US. Known as the RC in Sweden and the NSB El 16 in Norway

    I'm enjoying this already :) since this is a relatively large city surrounded entirely by water, historically it must have been primarily accessed by boat, so there's great potential for a historic harbour district, and the inevitable modern apartment blocks which spring up on them in later years. It's also in a really good place strategically to be a defensive city or stronghold for the same reason, so there might even be scope to make the city centre part of a medieval walled city, maybe like the Visby city wall in Sweden, which even has a similarly short Scandinavian name
    With so much room for characteristic features I'm looking forward to watching the city develop :)

    If you want to have "generic european police car" you have a problem. This is some police car in different european country:
    France: renault megane, renault clio, renault kangoo, peugeot partner, ...
    Spain: Citroen C3 (for the majority of the police car)
    Luxembourg: volkswagen transporter, skoda octavia
    Car color for each country
    France:
    White with blue symbol
    Luxembourg:
    White and light blue
    Spain:
    Dark blue
    Like you see each country has different police cars and color...

    Looking nice so far. Can't wait to see what you gonna do with this map.
    One suggestion : In Fine Road Tool enable the "Change max turn angle for more realistic tram tracks turns" option. This will remove those ugly sharp tram track turns you can see at 13:07 or 16:22. Of course this also means trams won't be able to make those turns. You can play with the angle if 90° is too drastic for your needs.

      PS: I've noticed that the "Straight slope" feature of Fine Road Tools is not working properly. Are you aware of any mods (or any recent game updates) that may be resetting it? I have to constantly check/unceck that box to get straight slopes. Bsquikle told me this is happening to him as well.

    Looks amazing! Really reminds me of the city of alesund in western Norway. It's set in a very similar landscape to nydal. Might be worth having a look at it in Google maps to see how it grows around the mountains being so close to the sea

    The map looks a lot like Norway. And in Norwegian Nydal means new valley

    Looks good! I would recommend making a monastery somewhere remote on the map, it might fit the theme.

    Maybe Im to late, but you can pretty much use any european train here to be honest because we share most of our trains during Trans European travel.

    Interesting, not what I expected! Also interesting because looking at that map and not seeing a lot of building space other than where you've made a start, be cool to see what you do with it

    This looks promising although i don't get how you can even create a "generic european city" since Europe is so diverse. I'd say the theme of this map is Swiss/southern-German. Same goes for the "generic" emergency vehicles : Europe is not a country unlike the US, so you won't get a generic type of vehicle (for example French police cars are white, German ones are green, Spanish ones are dark blue, etc.). Anyway if you're going for some sort of mix of different European regions then so be it, it can be fun.

    Wow, this map looks VERY interesting! Subscribed and looking forward to the series! Also, in case you didn't know, "Nydal" means "New Valley" in Swedish and Norwegian. Would be great to have a lot of Scandinavian influence on this map, I've been wanting "one of the greats" of C:S to attempt that for a long time!

    what do you mean by "generic european"? most countrys here have very different styles. for example there are a lot of great german train assets on the workshop, search for >ICEBRDB

    Break up the grid a little more! Many smaller european cities have this very wonky grid.

    I think that your roundabouts are too big they tend to have smaller roundabouts inside the city :)

    • @strictoaster
      @strictoaster  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally. I figured I wanted to make this one larger since it'll probably handle quite a bit of traffic. As the city starts expanding it'll probably feature smaller ones for sure.

      I wish c:s had mini roundabouts, the huge ones are unrealistic unless it's at the junction of two major roads, and even then they're either too big or they don't work well

    • @whistlehead9876

      You might be able to do it just using a white circle prop on a normal intersection, it would certainly be representative of how they're frequently made in the UK - just put a hump in the middle of a junction to make people slow down

    It looks and feels like Norway, which makes sense that you have electric car assets in there, but Teslas are missing, even though they're one of the most popular cars in Norway currently.
