I had the same kind of experience some time ago, when I went to see the city christmas tree with my kid, and suddenly there was a TV camera and a reporter asking me:"So what does the first advent of christmas mean to YOU?" @@yardenoved599 yeah, original writing was a script for physical play, but the adaptations we tend to all know/read are the book versions. So it's both. So if they said "Romeo and Juliet", it wouldn't be wrong, it just wouldn't be referring to live play version
@@LexitaMai Wait... what? I have never seen a prose book version of Romeo and Juliet - only the play. I just searched on Amazon and the top 50 results (I stopped looking after that) were all either the play or books analyzing the play and when I google "Romeo and Juliet Book" everything that comes up is related to the play. Did you read a novelization of a movie based on the play somewhere? I've seen a few movie versions too and they are all essentially the play. @@markissleepy go to any college or advanced highschool class and they'll give you a direct code to the ones in the library to make sure you don't borrow or purchase the play version because it's different than the book version lol. @@markissleepy I've worked in both a school and public library, and can confirm this is true. While the plotline of both is identical, there are some key differences to the play vs the novel version of Romeo and Juliet. The play Version is meant to be acted out, so it gives more detail on what exactly is supposed to physically happen and how. Most people *do* only know the book version, but don't even realize that they know that version because it's not common knowledge that there is a seperate version for plays. Often times it's only those who perform in a high quality theater (so often professional, but at times highschools with a more funded program, such as Stadium High School in Washington State, where I worked) who are aware of and have access to the play version. It's almost impossible to come by unless you're working directly through a performance agency or extend, so there is likely little to no mention of it online.

They also understand that this is a comedy segment that aims to poke fun at people who don’t ever read books, so they subconsciously conform to the role that’s expected of them by the audience. Or maybe they consciously do so because they realise they won’t be on TV if they name a book.

Even so, surely you could think of a book you actually have on your own bookshelf - unless you don't have any. Besides, most of these people admitted they don't read books.

It's such an unexpected and strange challenge. I think I would have struggled a bit though I am always in the process of reading one or more books and I have thousands of books.
@@kerensabirch5214 I've read quite a few books.. But without looking over at my bookshelf I'm struggling to remember the names of each individual book.

@RandalfTheBlack Even so, and I know people can be put on the spot and almost go blank - but if someone does read regularly, they should at least know the name of the current book they are reading, whatever it is. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The Hunger Games, The Help, The Lorax, y'know whatever it is current.
Obviously, Kimmel found people who already admit they don't read books making that question even harder for them. It is still pretty scary. I'm sure they talked to people who could name books, but I wonder how many they asked and what the ratio was. Was it 10 to 1? 10 knew a book and 1 didn't so they asked like 50 people and had 5 who didn't know? I'm a lil' worried to know the answer.

Fun Fact - your mind goes blank when some random guy or someone else ask you a question even though you know the answer
I had the same kind of experience some time ago, when I went to see the city christmas tree with my kid, and suddenly there was a TV camera and a reporter asking me:"So what does the first advent of christmas mean to YOU?" We just got there and we hadn't even seen the tree properly yet. I'm not religious and I didn't know what to say about the first advent, so I improvised and said:"It means peace and a time being with my family. A peaceful time." Since I was at peace and with my family. It turned out to be the right answer for the TV crew as we were shown in the evening news. And it was also straight from the heart.
Finally an actual fun fact that isn’t some nonsense

@@yardenoved599 yeah, original writing was a script for physical play, but the adaptations we tend to all know/read are the book versions.
Just curious what this book version that "everyone knows" that is different from the play is.
@@markissleepy go to any college or advanced highschool class and they'll give you a direct code to the ones in the library to make sure you don't borrow or purchase the play version because it's different than the book version lol. The play version has far more stage direction and cues than the book version and often is bound differently.
