    Welcome to the hilarious world of Father Ted. This first aired on UK TV at about 1AM on a weekday morning, a real graveyard slot. I was unemployed at the time so it was about 36 years ago. I rememeber telling everyone about it and one by one my friends watched and fell in love with it as did the whole of the UK. A true classic.

      You're right that it was a bit of a sleeper hit but it first aired at 9pm on a Friday night on Channel 4 in 1995. That sticks in my head 'cos I was at university, we saw the first episode and it quickly became required viewing. I do remember it being very word of mouth at the beginning though.

Not overly long each episode, under half n hour but it goes quick as you know lol. Great Irish actors, filmed in Ireland but with English production if i'm not mistaken. Fr Jack is so funny and he was an established actor and is a huge part of the show. This is Irish comedy at its best considering it came out 27 yrs ago but with each view ye still can't help pissin yourself laughing it's so good. Heres a fact about the show from a discussion board
    Father Ted was commissioned by Channel 4, a British Broadcaster, from Hat Trick who employed Irish writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews to develop their script. The show was NEVER presented to RTE as a script idea from either the writers or Hat Trick, a British Company. Its worth pointing out that the commissioning editor in Channel 4 that "bought" the show was Seamus Cassidy, now back home and running Happy Endings, the company that make The Panel for RTE.
    Father Ted, whether we like it or not is a British show, made for British TV with British money. The Irish Film Board or no other Irish funding was contributed (or sought) for the show. The nationality of the writers or the location of the show is of no consequence. The exteriors could have been shot anywhere in Britain just as easily. The average British viewer wouldn't have known or much less cared if it wasn't Ireland. The views of Irish viewers weren't a consideration. Get over it.
    Its true to say that Irish crew were used for these location shoots and obviously the Irish cast too.This alone does not make an Irish show.
    In recent years lots of British TV shows have been shot and edited in Ireland. Most of these shows are set in Britain and use Irish locations for Britain. The only reason they're being made here is due to the funding being made available by the film board. Like Father Ted, none of these shows are Irish. If RTE or TV3 buy them down the line it doesn't make them any more Irish.
    The important fact from all of this is that at least talented Irish crews are getting employment. Thats all that matters.

    • @Dreyno
      @Dreyno ปีที่แล้ว

      So only the creators, actors and crew were Irish. And the guy who commissioned it. And it was set in Ireland. With Irish characters. And all exterior shots were filmed in Ireland. And there was numerous cultural references British people didn’t even pick up on. But because it was British money and network, none of that counts? So the entire creative process counts for nought because of where the finance came from?

    Welcome to Father Ted.
    And well done for making it through.Maybe take a couple of laxatives to make the next show truly memorable.
    I believe that the best British comedies,no matter how cutting,divisive or controversial,always have a gentleness at their core.Never spiteful,never vengeful,no underlying vitriol or hate.It sometimes feels more like being chided but not talked down to and never preached.Hard balance to get right.
    Looking forward to your ride with this one,hope you got rubber underpants.Enjoy.

    In Britain Father Ted is a comedy. In Ireland it's a documentary.

    It's pretty close to Corner Gas, I reckon. Similar small community characters and the idiocy that seems to thrive in them. Both brilliantly funny.
