Miguel from USA, one of my youtube followers emailed me to give a suggestion or idea on how to deal with convex and concave pieces while sewing.
As a matter of fact, it is not an easy task for people who does not have much expertise.
This basic video shows two ways of attaching the pieces together by sewing.
In the first way, I use little cuts to evenly help fold the edges. It can be used when we do simple or flat covers. The second way consists in sewing the lateral panel to the main plate and is used when we do foamed or heavy projects.
I used a small piece to do the demonstration that would make us understand what about. To sew bigger projects would be easier to handle.
Very soon we will be performing real size upholstery projects (car seats, motorcycles, door cards, carpets, headliners, bags, etc.)

Thank you for the tutorial. It shows in dept the actual steps needed without rushing the video. I'm actually able to watch and apply the techniques that you teach. I have a question I must ask. Did you modify that presser foot? I ask because it seems to simplify the seeing process.

Regarding the presser.foot, I modified it on purpose that is why I went with a lathe operator to do the job for me. I did it to ease the leather sewing for the steering-wheels and also have a better view to show sewing procedures in the upholstery tutorials. By the way, you could find these kind of feet in the aftermarket, otherwise, by using a mototool you could cut the little legs off.

Thanks for watching! Regularly, stragiht or concave edges should be sewn down to rounded convex edges. To ease the process of sewing around the cuts alleviate it.

I Stumbled onto your videos after struggling with a sundeck that is not symmetrical. If you were my neighbor I'd be over there everyday after work trying to learn more!! You a skilled craftsman. It's hard to find good upholstery fabricators, hence why I started doing my own. I really like the details and being able to watch the videos allows me to articulate a plan of attack. I also like that there's no talking. Just some subtitles.
I have a Seiko sth 8bld 3. I should have bought the pfaff. How do get that needle to creep along with a clutch motor?
rywolf01 I'm happy you have found these videos useful! ...In fact, the upholstery videos help us, some way to get new ideas to develop our own techniques...there is still, many excelent trimmers everywhere.
Regarding my sewing machine, I have slowed down the speed by changing the original pulley for a smaller one...sometimes, when I need more precision, I turn off the machine and move the 'big pulley/wheel' by hand LOL. Definetely, I think the best solution is to have a servo motor.

I appreciate your response. I thought about a servo motor but sail rite made this video stating the servo really would not have the power at slow speeds. I think my biggest challenge is cutting perfect patterns. You make some of the best patterns I've ever seen. May I ask where you bought your pully from?
rywolf01 So far, I have never tried out a servo motor yet. The other day, I was at one Pfaff supplier, checking the 1245 heavy duty, sewing machine new version, and it has a servo motor.Check please this information:

I bought the small pulley from a sewing machine technician. A lathe operator can also do it , at any measure.
Which motor were you considering to purchase? I have been researching servo motors for about a year. Just can't make up my mind.
rywolf01 It's up to you...if I were you, I'd buy a servo motor. Try to get a good trade mark.

Hello Regina, Most of the times I use 'stationery cardboard' to pattern flat pieces. I also use 'stretchy vinyl' in case of rounded or irregular surfaces. Transparent plastic is also useful. I use it once in a while because it allows me watch the marked line I did on the foam.
Watch min Two:03 of this video where I show the use of 'elastic vinyl' on some pieces: th-cam.com/video/82lKoDdCDeE/w-d-xo.html In this case, it was necessary to stretch the lower mold to avoid wrinkles.

B Galvan Si, ya es tiempo...en los setentas llegué a poner estos 'bow tipe headliners' que se usaban en los vochos y carros antiguos. Voy a empezar con uno de cartón que lleva la espuma bondeada y es muy usado en en los carros.

I just found your videos and they are well shot and expertly informational. I was curious though, what make and model sewing machine do you use/would recommend. I make leather backpacks in my spare time, and have been looking to reupholster my vehicles seats, but the sewing machine I am currently using was not necessarily made for leather, and I am looking for a new/used one that would suit my leather-working needs better. Thanks for any info you have. I have done a lot of research and watched a lot of reviews, but just figured a recommendation could help too.
Hello Andrew, To do upholstery it is advisable the use of a 'walking feet sewing machine'...also called 'triple transportation sewing machine'. To start doing upholstery, a flat bed, single needle would be ok. Then you would complete your equipment with a post bed, double needle sewing machine very useful to overpass curved areas.

Por qué con hilo blanco??? Eso no está bien
Muy buena observación ya que Ud. se refiere a la 'costura de unión de piezas'. Tiene toda la razón. Lo correcto es usar un hilo relacionado al color del vinil y si lo hago en trabajos reales de tapicería.
¿Porqué usé ese color de hilo? Porque en ese momento no tuve el hilo gris relacionado. Por lo tanto al coser con hilo blanco corría el riesgo de que se notara la costura blanca. Tuve que hacer un buen ajuste a las tensiones para evitarlo y como podemos apreciar no se 'ríe' la costura para nada.
Hay que tomar en cuenta que el tema principal de este video/muestra no es las costuras, sino mas bien como coser partes curvas que en realidad no son fáciles.
una pregunta amigo ... normalmente que tan fuerte deve ser la presion del hilo ? tengo una maquina de coser pero no se cual deve ser la tension el el hilo si la maquina trae del uno al diez . que tension recomiendas... y GRACIAS de antemano.. espero tu respuesta...
+jose castellano La tensión se regula de acuerdo al hilo con el que acostumbramos o vamos a coser...las tensiones son parejas arriba y abajo, de tal modo que el 'nudo de cierre'(lock stitch) debe quedar en el centro del grosor del material...hay que ir probando...le recomiendo ver este video que nos da idea del ajuste de tensiones...en todas las máquinas el proceso es similar...en el caso de su máquina, cuando tenga la medida exacta, entonces ya va a saber en cual número dar el ajuste al tensionador...th-cam.com/video/rJENXLRhXQI/w-d-xo.html

+Thomas Zhu Firstly, I would say this basic practice was done on 'vinyl'...it is not leather. The liquid I use is called, here, in Mexico 'washer', but so far, I do not know the composition...shoemakers use it a lot to erase pencil marks, glue residues, some dirt, etc. withjout affecting the surface of leather. it also works on vinyl to erase the 'silver pen leather marker'.

I am trying to sew a cover with vinyl that has very small rounded corners and finding it very difficult to sew the flat felled seams. Any suggestions?
The 'glue trick' I show in the video or the use of 'double side sticking tape' which would help to keep the seams folded in place.
The glue trick helped but trying to sew the flat feld stitch around the inside corners was still almost impossible. I was folding the the seams down the sides, should I fold them across the top instead?
I understand it is difficult to sew on top around by using a 'flat bed sewing machine'. This part should also be folded and glued...try to get the folds flat. In fact, 'post bed or cylinder-arm sewing machines' are useful for curved projects.

Para borrar uso un líquido que no afecta a la superficie de la piel, lo usan los zapateros para quitar manchas de pegamento, lápiz, etc. ...le llaman 'lavador de cuero' ... hasta ahora, no se de que está compuesto este líquido.

@@daytonpyro Yes, 138 polyester thread for this sample. In some other projects I sometimes use thicker thread sizes.
how to make the bottom part .?
I only taught the procedure to approach the curved sections...on a real project depends on what to do...if a cushion, you could cut and sew a bottom piece with a zipper or velcro...perhaps, it would be a wooden base, so it would be fastened to it with tacks or staples.
