  • First off the day couldn't have been more perfect and offered us the best conditions possible for late September.
Normally I am always prepared when I hike and on this day I was as well. However, I normally am not all that hungry when I climb and this was no exception. I kept pushing on and on until l got to a point where I was going super slow and knew what the issue was. I did eat something but at that point my blood sugars were so low that I didn't recover properly. I felt like garbage now. Way to go!
To add to this we were hiking late September and the days are shorter. I was moving slow and not thinking great. Forgetting to check my Garmin near the top I took us climbers right which ended up taking us on the wrong path and cliffing us out. The backtracking would have put us late to the summit and subsequently giving us a hike out in the dark which I didn't want to do (I did have a headlamp).
I didn't want to turn back being less than 45 minutes from the summit, but at this point with how I felt and my blood sugars the way they were I figured I better come back another day. Good thing too. Not being super focused at this point I stepped on a boulder that shifted under my weight and dropped me on my tail bone and cut me up a bit. Insult to injury I guess. As I rolled around in pain I remember my brother saying something like, "Hopefully I can figure out how to work your rescue thingy". After a rest I was actually ok to hike out.
The good thing is the mountain isn't going anywhere. I will be back to tame this beast another day. Cheers. Hope you enjoy the video!
Disclaimer - Always scramble within your own abilities. Thoroughly assess the situation and research the route. Just because I may have done this route at this time doesn't mean you can or should. GPS and/or a topo map are a valuable tool to help. Leave a route description behind with exact location should you not arrive home at a predetermined time. Have a way to contact rescue as well if you are in an area of no cell service(SPOT, Garmin, etc.). Also, if hiking in winter make sure you have the necessary skill and knowledge regarding unstable conditions and perform a proper risk assessment prior to engaging in this activity.

Thanks Harlan for sharing it with us. It’s good to reach the summit, but also important to stop when things go wrong.

Thanks Yuxin! Agreed. Thought it was important to still post it.

Very inspiring. You will continue it with the great plan. Like what I did to Akamina Ridge in Waterton.

I did the Jon Martin route. It was almost hands in the pocket for the most part. I can't remember any difficulties. This was in the 80's

Took me two tries to get up Bogart. I came from Ribbon Lake both times but missed the same cliff band the first time as well.

... THANKS Sam! I pondered not uploading but I find we all learn more from our mistakes than the easy stuff right. At least that's what I tell myself. Cheers!

I led a group up Caldron Peak a month ago and we failed to summit due to a route finding mishap on my part. These things happen. I think you posting a video of a failed attempt shows another much needed side to scrambling - when to call it quits and be safe. Like you said, the mountain isn't going anywhere

... Thanks Wesley! Ya I debated whether or not to post the video but decided that maybe it's a good lesson for not just me but everyone to remember that social media isnt all perfect. How did the group do with the error on Caldron? I'm sure they were fine. It's always a great day to be out. Cheers!

Unfortunate you didn’t make it to the summit but I still appreciate the upload. I use your videos for reference when I go out and this will be no different

.. Hmm. Not sure. This was really fun until I felt bad. Likely Mt. SHARK, Smutwood for views.

The upside to not summiting is that now it won’t be so boring going back and doing it again. Not that summiting Bogart would ever be boring. Last year I did Red Ridge and came down the scree cone. That was an awesome route as a loop.

@@alane3983 ... True Alan! That's a steep scree chute. Would be fun going down. Bogart is a beautiful hike though.

It may be frustrating, but truly, there are no bad days in the mountains. I will be trying to summit Mt. James Walker in a few weeks. I love being above the tree line. Cheers.

... I agree. Other than not summitting it was the best weather I have had in 10 years. No bad days. I agree. Have fun on James Walker!
