    If there is such a thing as an after-life, then I want to come back as a cat or dog, preferably in Vancouver, and have an owner that takes me to Dr. Burstyns practice. Everyone, (and everything) looks so chilled out over there. Just look at the blissful look on Cedrics face as he's getting loved to bits before his ''pill''.

    I prepare my dogs food infront of him and it gets him to have a big watery mouth and then I put it in the back of his mouth. He swallows easily from all the saliva and quickly because he wants me to put his dinner down lol.

      Not at all. I used to take care of an aggressive Shi Tzu with cardiac disease while working overnights in the ICU as a student. I'd give that little monster 8 tablets during a 10 hr shift. Don't remember how many times that dog was admitted, but it was more than a few. Of course I wouldn't fancy pilling a wolf or a psychotic rottweiler, but you, my dear viewer, shouldn't either.

    Could you maybe make a video about how to keep dogs from eating things they shouldn't, like grass or acorns?
    A few days ago my three year old, otherwise healthy dog, had to be left home alone for a long period during the day, and ate several things he shouldn't have, and ultimately he didn't survive. He was always hungry, but our vet said he was overweight and we should be careful about how much we fed him. So he was always eating things he found in the yard, on the floor, or snatching food from the counter, and none of our prevention methods worked. It's obviously too late for us, but I think other dog owners could benefit from some tips on how to keep them from eating or chewing things they shouldn't.

    My dog would not take Tramadol after his TPLO surgery no matter how I tried to give it to him. He learned how to push his tongue back in order to catch the pill when I used a pill gun. He wouldn’t take it in any food or pill pockets, no cream cheese, no peanut butter, no meats or cheeses. It was so stressful when 8 hours rolled around, I knew of the impending battle that laid ahead! Finally we tried something that was a lifesaver! We went to a Pharmacy and bought small empty gel caps, only big enough to fit the pill inside. Then I would hide in his normal food. He would eat it up with NO PROBLEMS! I couldn’t believe it! Worked like a charm!

    Could you please explain why dogs dont bite if your hand is in their mouths? (Just asking to be more confident about it)

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      For two reasons: 1) A bite is a set of motor commands issued by the brain to the motor muscles of the head and neck that results in a forward extension of the neck and a clamping of the jaws. When something is being shoved down the back of a dog's throat, the last thing the dog will do reflexively is extend the neck, it will more likely back-up or have a gag response, so you're basically hacking their motor functions. 2) With the nose elevated and jaw open, there is no leverage for a bite, they would need to back up and close the mouth before starting a bite motion, which buys you some time.
      Or more simply, dogs and cats just don't think to bite when something hits the back of the tongue!

    Oh, man. I wish I knew it was okay to reach that far back into the throat when I had to watch my boss' dog for a long weekend. She had several pills she needed to take each day and she got wise to the peanut butter trick on the last day. I did essentially the same thing but instead rolled it down the back of her tongue because she was becoming a wiggle worm. I closed her mouth and lifted her snout and the pill made it down without incident. Thankfully she still liked me after that. Thank you for the pointers!

    TIA

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry about it. Cats, and all animals really, will drink the right amount when they are healthy. Unless they have an underlying illness, in which case, more fruitful to focus on the illness.

    Doctor, can you make a video about how to wash a cat/ dog and how to dry them properly! Especially for a cat. They dont like the dryer, so they run away- am I supposed to let them or am i supposed to hold them and dry them?

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll consider it but grooming isn't really my main jam. If many people request a bathing video I'm more likely to do it :-).

      Air dry should be fine with a short hair at least. My cat just licked itself clean again. Of course not in super cold temperatures... that might be uncomfortable.

    I have a question. Do you need to college to be a vet assistant or is it a hands on training kind of thing?

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a 2 year program in Canada and US. Some people do the job with on the job training, but training to become a registered vet tech is still beneficial long-term if you want to do it for more than a year or two.

    I found it impossible to feed the pill like this. My dog will stubbornly refuse to swallow and make faces as the pill dissolves in her mouth and tastes bad and the moment I let go she spits it out. My best success was mashing cheese around it because she will eat cheese without chewing and practically inhale it.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course wrapping it in something tasty is nice for your dog, and I strongly encourage it, but if you want to pill in a hurry, here is my troubleshooting tip for you: If pill is spat out - it wasn't shoved far enough back! Pointing the chin at the ceiling helps too.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better make sure you put the pill in the back of the mouth. I usually find bigger dogs much easier to do than small ones. Of course if your dog is highly aggressive, this may not be the right way to medicate them and you should talk to your vet about alternative pathways of administering medication.

    I used to crumble a pill into a powder, open dog's mouth and put the powder on her tongue. Shehad no choice but to swallow, coz she couldn't spit out the powder :) Worked best with small pills
