- In this video I demonstrate how easy it is to replace a damaged garage door panel. You just need a few simple tools and make sure to follow all the necessary safety precautions. I also demonstrate how to easily make your own winding bars. If you drove into your garage door or dented it with your snowblower, this is the video for you!
This is the most informative and helpful video about garage panel replacement. Thank you.
Thanks! I’m so glad you think so! Hope the video helped you👍 And thanks for the nice comment :)
Best video on the internet for how to do this.

Thank you so much good sir for sharing this knowledge!

Hey Mike, first time viewer. I put you in the category of Martinbuilt and Project Farm. That's a compliment btw.
That’s an honour and a
Privilege! Thanks so much, this comment made my day!!
Thanks for making this, I would have made a mess of it without your knowledge.
Awesome. Thanks for the kind sheds. So glad it helped
Great video, very descriptive. I understand the use of vice grips for the cable. Is using the lock panel in the rail too dangerous ? And that's why you use vice grips all around?
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful.
The slide lock would accomplish the same thing. But to engage the slide lock the garage door must be fully closed. Using the vice grips instead allows to lock the door in place a few inches off the ground for room to drop the damaged panel.
Hopefully I’m describing this alright, and please let me know if I misunderstood the question.
Great video, thanks
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment 😃👍
Good day Mike. I need to remove the top panel of my garage door. What would I need to do with the vice grips and spring in this case? I think I know but I want to be sure.
Hi Cory, I haven’t ever changed a top panel before. I have an idea, but since I’ve never done it before I don’t want to steer you wrong. What exactly are you planning? I’d love to know the best way myself. let me know! Mike
Super helpful video!
Thanks 🙏
Hi Mike, great video! This is exactly what I need to replace two bottom panels, however, I need to also replace the top panel. Any advice on that or modifications to the instructions? Vise grip placement/winding bar placement?
Thanks Rick! Glad you found it helpful! I haven’t ever changed a top panel before. But my method in this video wouldn’t work because I rely on the top panel to rest the winding bars after taking some load off the torsion spring.
For the top panel you’ll have to completely unwind the torsion spring by loosing the set screws and using the torsion bars. I’ve seen a few good TH-cam videos on this. But You can also watch my video on how to balance a garage door, where I loosen the set screws and add more rotations to the spring. You’d follow the same steps there. Except you’ll be reversing things by unwinding the spring until it’s completely loose without tension. And then you’ll be able to remove the top panel without needing to have the winding bars butted up against the top panel.
Be safe!
@mikebikercanada don't need to do all that. Placing vice grips on the rollers under the top panel will keep it from going up. Then take off top panel and replace. Easy.
Thanks for this info!
What a great video!
Thanks! 🙏
great video, where did you buy your panels from?
Thanks! I bought it from a Garaga supplier here in Ottawa, Canada called The Door Company
Wow love if You were close to Long Island to help with mine!!!
Thanks! Unfortunately I’m north of the border 🇨🇦
Hello Mike, could you let me know where can I buy the one piece of garage door panel for 16’ in Canada?
Hi Peter, I’m in Ottawa and went to The Door Company located in Metcalfe, Ontario. Great place. They supply most of eastern Ontario.
www.thedoorcompany.ca/ca
My door has 2 torsion springs so will I just do the same thing
Yes I would imagine you’d just repeat the steps for both springs 👍
At 11:52, what is the wrench for??? Never saw you use it.
lol sorry to confuse you with that!
I actually borrowed that video clip talking about safety from my other garage door video where I demonstrate how to add tension on the torsion spring. With that procedure, you do need a wrench to loosen the fasteners on the torsion spring.
But for replacing a garage door panel, disregard that wrench. It is not needed at all
You are very observant, I like that!
@@mikebikercanada thanks for clarifying that!
Of course! :) 🔧
I see u having a open in wrench in your hand while starting to lift the bar to release the tension but u said nothing bout loosening and of the bolts it looked like u didn’t loosen any bolts on the torsion spring 😊
🔥
Thanks AJ !
Just use a come along wrench to pull the cable.
Great point. Thanks for sharing 👍
