I think so too. It is my favorite Kurosawa film. I first saw this movie over 30 years ago and to this day I have never forgotten the acts of kindness and humanity that I saw in this film. I am glad you think so highly of this film too.
It’s definitely one of Kurosawa’s darker films, despite his intention of it being optimistic and hopeful. More crucially, it’s too episodic. And it’s a pretty long film at 140 minutes.
I just watched this film via Netflix. Man, Kurosawa really took advantage of color for his first color film. The DVD has a documentary also which explains that Kurosawa painted much of the props because he didn't trust tahat the film stock would capture the color he was looking for. A visual masterpiece with great character development. The trolley freak is supposed to be Kurosawa (film freak).
I'm a middle aged male from Sweden. I like Japanese cuisine, architecture and the way in which the Japanese through art, philosophy and other means display a very mature and intelligent attitude to all aspects of life itself. I dislike Japanese vehicles. For various reasons, I prefer those made in the West. But don't get me wrong, I'm all in approval of this street car.
@jmu84 Omg, I saw it today. Too bad I missed the ending... the last part I've seen was when the guy (uncle/dad) was packing his stuff to leave when the flower making girl requested to see him.
The uncle realized that Katsuko had told the police that he had been abusing her and they came over to his house to question him. He was seen packing his clothes to flee and it was only then the aunt learned of his abuse towards their niece. It was revealed that he man was her uncle. The last scenes had the boy die and his father in delirium shouted to his soon about the pool in their new fantasy home and Roku-chan coming home from his fantasy tram
One of my favorites films, i don't understand why is not popular than another Kurosawa`s films, is a great and kind story
I never understood this film. I remember watching it a long time ago.
The way of the life. A lot of people and the stories about one of them. the human pain, and the different personages and his attitude in the life.

I saw this movie in the 80s. Right now I am in Japan, and the trains really do go 'dodeskaden'. I've never forgotten this movie or that sound.
世界映画史の中でも最高傑作!
Despite what the movie critics say, there are no words to describe to you how much I love
Do des Ka den.
Me too
The critics, at least in America, didn’t care for it a great deal, but they didn’t dislike it either.
Wonderful movie! Kurosawa is the best!!
one of most memorable films...

My favorite character was the train guy. "Dodes 'ka-Den! Dodes 'ka-Den! Dodes 'ka-Den!"
My favourite.
I saw this film a long time ago, and I thought it was great. I haven't seen any trace of it since.
A trailer for Dodeska'den...very cool!
I've seen this film when I was about 12. I'd like to watch it again but I can't find it anywhere. :(
All my favorite parts in the movie is when he says dodeskaden!
Mine too, he seems to be in his own world. I've been there myself.
Very interesting movie!
