The vibrancy of the colours and the dream sequences are amazing!
This movie is the most underrated of Kurosawa's oeuvre.
What so many seem to miss about this movie is the underlying theme of how (all of our) self delusions often sustain us in trying circumstances.
There's a similar theme In Neil Gaiman's short story "Three Septembers and a January". The God called Despair tries everything to drive a man (the real historical figure Joshua Norton, Emperor of the United States) to end himself, but he never does.
As noted by Despair - "His madness keeps him sane."
very recently got into kurosawa and this is my 3rd film of his i’ve watched and i can’t say for sure but my hypothesis is the people i’ve seen calling this a bad movie are way too strict with setting limits on what’s cinema
Fabulous!
Masterpiece of Kurosawa
Truly. I remember well.

see some hints of what eventually happens to great acclaim in Kagemusha and Ran
And "Dreams" (1990).
