Mom hates my sister's cooking (she's not fond of cooking) but I like cooking and have earned the privilege of her approval. It's quite the compliment.

My former (Chinese) co-workers loved that no means no in northern Europe. In China they were used to getting asked 15 times in a row whether they wanted anything to eat, even though they kept saying no.
Here it's just, "Do you want some?" - "No." - "OK." and that's it.
At first they thought we were very uncaring, but after a while they realised that you can have deep, meaningful conversations, when you don't have to spend 60% of your time rejecting food that you have already rejected 14 times before.

My mother was useless and thought nothing of giving my sister and me crap. She often took a few slices of that prepackaged Eckrich bologna, slapped it onto a paper plate and sliced it into squares. She'd throw a handful of chips on it and hand it to us for lunch. We peeled it up with our fingers to eat. But when we went to see either of our grannies we knew we were gonna be fed. And we were happy they cared enough about us to make something for us, even the sandwiches they made us were great.

So freaking funny, when my parents & brothers moved to Australia, we met beautiful Italian & Greek folks & when we got out of quarantine & moved to Elwood, the family next door was Italian. They kept talking to my Mum in Italian lol, Mum had jet black hair, olive skin & dark brown eyes but Mum said Och Naw, i cannae speak Italian, i'm Scottish... Ah was a beautiful friendship, somehow we understood each other & the Grand Mother, dressed in black from head to toe, i loved her, she sewed a Bunny tail on my pants. They bring Spaghetti to our place & Mum took ox tail casserole to theirs, it was a cooking extravaganza 😄 bahahahaha. Some of my best memories.

Back in the 80s, my Grandma’s minister was making the holidays rounds to visit anyone who had invited him. Mostly 1st-2nd generation grandmas. He had 3-5 churches every Sunday. That’s a lot of conversations like this.
When he showed up, he begged us not to make him sit or take food. My grandma was a great baker, but she didn’t force anything on him. My Mom also acted as his security to make sure he wasn’t attacked by the Aunts. He was so thankful and less bloated by the time he left.
