    Shannon is amazing. He lives and breathes hockey. I'm glad you're including him on your journey to fandom. You've found the greatest athletes in pro sports. I ain't lying. The agility, precision, speed, brute force, stamina, and pride... That puck is 14°F and weighs as much as a cue ball. Every goalie that gets razzed is still standing in front of that at 80-100mph FOR FUN. You'll hear of some sprained finger sidelining a 20-mil athlete in some other sport. Hockey players spit out teeth, get stitches, then come back two minutes later, net one, and smile in their opponents' faces. Welcome to the family. (If you want to be blown away by one player in particular, check out Dustin Byfuglien. The man was a linebacker on skates, and a good dude.)

    You have the interpretation of icing correct. It's triggered when the puck is shot from behind the red center line and past your opponent's goal line.
    However, once Icing is triggered and before the whistle is blown there is a race to see who would get the puck first. So, if the defending team reaches the faceoff dot in their own zone first then icing is called. But, if the team who iced the puck is able to reach the faceoff dot first then icing is negated and the play continues. (Kind of like how players can "tag up" if their team is offside and play will continue. There are a few rules like this in the game to keep the game flowing and prevent a bunch of stoppages.
    It used to be that instead of a race to the faceoff dot it was a literal race to touch the puck. Which is often along the boards so, you'd have 2 guys in a full on sprint absolutely barreling into the end boards just in the hope that they would touch the puck first and help their team. Players were getting injured so, the NHL changed it to the system above.

    Hockey is a sprinting sport. Players put as much power and effort as they can in 30-45 seconds, which is called a shift. My high school coach used to say, "If you aren't tired after a shift, you didn’t work hard enough." Usually, a 1-2 minute break between shifts gives players enough time to regain their stamina.

    To clarify, he wasn't saying assists are better than goals. He was saying that people typically value goals more than assists, but there are some situations where the player who made the pass actually made the more difficult or skilled play than the person who scored the goal.

    just wanted to correct you on one thing, the trapezoid isn’t the blue area that you were referring to, that is called the goal crease. it’s pretty much like the goalies “safe area” and if an opposing player interferes with the goalie in that area, it could either be called a penalty, or if the interference results in a goal, the goal will be disallowed. the trapezoid is the area directly BEHIND the net where there are two red lines that connect to the goal line, and if the goalie goes behind the net to play the puck, he has to stay within those two lines or it will be a delay of game penalty.

  • @liamtimberlake2402
    @liamtimberlake2402 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    One thing I would add about some terms he used.
    Garbage goal also (to me) can mean a goal that doesn’t matter in a game. For example, your team is up 5-1 and then the other team scores with 10 seconds left in the game. There’s not enough time for them to win but that goal makes the game look closer than it was - that’s a garbage goal.
    “Turtle” is a term i have also heard used as a style of defense. If your team scores a goal or two (usually two or more) pretty early on in a game or period, they sometimes will “turtle” up which means they play a very passive game offensively, aggressive defensively. Kind of like the “Trap” he mentioned, except only when a team has a lead and is trying to protect it.

    One timing a slap shot is more difficult than a typical wrist shot, with a wrister you're more accurate but usually with less velocity than if you connect on a slapper, but you also whiff a lot more trying to slap it. Slapshots have fallen to the wayside in recent years, wristers or a quick release snapshot out of a stick handle is the more common way players shoot these days.

  • @sampage5882
    @sampage5882 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    For your questions:
    - Others have commented on the difference between the shots, but for wrist shots, it's not JUST the wrist, but the legs, core, and arms. Your top hand is pulling in, your bottom hand pushing out, so it is your whole body.
    - For me turtle isn't just about protecting yourself, but agitating then not answering the bell in response, a classic "he can dish it out but can't take it."
    - Assists are huge. Obviously there are "unimportant" assists, where you are dishing it off to somebody and they do all the work, you just happened to be one of the 3 guys who touch the puck before it goes in, and conversely, there are the times where the assist is ALL the work. It just depends on the situation.
    - Icing is just two red lines (the center red and the goal line). The only recent change (2014) to the icing rules is the hybrid icing (linesman calling icing when players reach the hash marks as opposed to touching the puck). It should still be called at end of game, but if the defending team does not send a player down to touch the puck, icing will not be whistled.
    - The trapezoid is behind the net which is where the goalie can play the puck behind the net, the crease is the blue paint in front of the net where players cannot interfere with the goalie.
    - It is very easy to get tired, you want to limit your shifts to about a minute or under. Yes you are on skates, but you aren't just gliding. Most of your shift will be spent sprinting, or in puck battles, which is like being on the line in football.
    - 20 min hockey terminology ;)

    Hockey sticks used be made of wood and were cheap. Now, they're made of expensive space-age materials, especially the ones the pros use. These new sticks flex, allowing players to have faster and more accurate wristshots.
    "Trap" hockey was popular in the late 1990s and the first few years of the 2000s, a period we now call the "Dead Puck Era." It was a defensive style of hockey that allowed mediocre teams to beat teams that were better on offense. There wasn't much scoring and the games could be boring. The TV ratings went down and teams made less money, so they had to fix it. They did so it by making a few rule changes and doing a better job of enforcing the existing rules against interference, holding, and hooking. This allowed players to create more goals.

  • @ll7868
    @ll7868 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There are 5 Holes, all 4 corners and the tiny space between the goalie pads, they're called holes because at least 2 of them are open at all times, cover a hole another opens up, you can only cover 3 at any given time but the 5 Hole is always moving wherever the goalie is, that's their biggest weakness but since it's always moving it's also the hardest to aim for, a shooter has to anticipate the goalie's movements.

    A key factor for role players is where they ultimately slot in the highest league available.
    Most players that make the NHL are highly skilled and were probably always the top player on their team up until a few leagues below the NHL.
    Suddenly everyone is very good, and you can't be the top scorer anymore because other players are better at it. So what do you do? You find a role.
    Are you a setup guy? Are you a two-way player? Are you a defensive player? Are you really good at faceoffs? Are you big and tough and have to turn into an enforcer / fighter to stay in the league? In today's game even fighters have to be able to play well enough to not cost a team by having them out on the ice.
    On defence, are you an offensive defenceman that can move the puck and score, or are you a 'stay at home' defenceman that is more responsible for taking care of your own end?
    So basically when you get up near the professional leagues, it's like musical chairs - you have to find a chair before the music stops. And sometimes, no matter how skilled you were when younger, your chair involves grinding along the boards digging pucks out on the 4th line. And no matter how hard you try or how long you are in the league, your role won't change. That's just where you top out amongst the very best.

  • @donovanjd3

    The blue area you thought was the Trapazoid is actually the goalies crease. Which is kinda like protecting zone for the goalie. If you make contact with the goalie in the blue area, you get a penalty.
    Also if you make contact with the goalie in that area, and a goal occurs...the goal is waved off.
    Also a defending player can't grab the puck inside the goal crease.
    The trapezoid is behind the net. In the white ice area.
    You will see the goal line in front of the net. It extends across the ice from board to board. Then You will see two lines on either side of the net ( behind the next , along the boards). They goalie can play the puck inside this area. But not on the outside. It's kinda hard to explain. A good visual would make it easy to explain in seconds.

    It is very easy to get tired when playing hockey, you are in a cold rink wearing all the padding getting hot and sweating easy. They often will change on the bench every 30 seconds to a minute, with people stuck out there for 2 minutes you'll hear announcers mention how they've been out there for a long time they gotta be exhausted. To think of basketball or soccer for example, those guys can often play the entire time of a game, but Hockey you have 4 lines of people that will switch on and off fluidly in the middle of playing every 30-90 seconds usually, they need breaks because it gets exhausting easy, even just having to keep your focus and head on a swivel because everything can potentially injure you if you are not paying attention.

    THG got one thing wrong, the best place to shoot for is a goalie's blocker side, it's the one holding the stick, their glove side is often faster, it's their catching glove. Standup goalies are weaker at the bottom corners of the net and usually don't open their 5 Hole as much, they'll drop down to their knees or sideways for lower shots while butterfly goalies are weaker at the top corners and since they're usually crouched low, on their knees and doing the splits as they push from side to side they almost always have their 5 Hole opening and closing continuously.

  • @benswaggerty331
    @benswaggerty331 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Easiest way to explain icing. There is a red line that cuts the rink in half. If you are on your side of the that line (half where your goal tender is) you can not just shoot the puck all the way down to the other side of the ice. If you’re going to shoot the puck into the other team’s side of the ice, you have to cross the center ice line first before doing so

    • @benswaggerty331

    W upload Daily CT! I'm going to give some hockey terms you NEED to know as well!
    The Slot: This as common a term as it gets. The Slot is anything directly in the lane in front of the goal and goaltender. This is where hockey centers aim to stand bc if the center gets a wack on the puck in the slot thats a winning formula.
    Tip-in: Tip-ins are counted as a shot on goal on scoresheet. Tip-in refers a deflection shot off the stick to the net. When a player standing in front of the net deflects off their stick a fast moving puck from a teammate shooting from the high slot* and the puck ends up in the net. Typically the defensemen is shooting a slap or strong quick shot and may have to wait for a window to shoot. Defenders on the other team might have too many players clogging the slot trying to block to any shot coming to the goaltender. When the player at the high slot* shoots the puck and it goes in the shooter may get the credit for the goal if the tip-in is from a player on the other team or it goes right in without touching anything. Players may score a goal if a deflection is bounced off their skate, butt or face but those are deflections not Tip-in goals bc its not off the stick. note* High Slot is far away from the net closer to the blue line but not quite.

    Icing is when the defending team shoots the puck down the ice and it crosses the other teams goal line. Another part of icing which is new within the last 10 years (for the NHL at least) where there's a race to the hash marks and if a player from the team that iced the puck wins that race he beats out the icing call and play continues. Before that rule change it was a race for the puck and that ended up causing a lot of injuries so they switched the rule. Icings kinda hard to explain in a comment so hopefully this helps haha welcome to the hockey family

    • @cellytv8063

  • @ryans413
    @ryans413 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So icing is when you shoot the puck into the defending teams zone before hitting the redline. So you have the centre line where the logo is then the red line then the blue line. If a team shoots the puck before clearing the redline its icing and puck will come back to that teams zone. Plus as a penalty that team can’t switch out its players and the opposing team can. Offside is when a player goes over the blue line before the puck douse this rules is in pace so teams can’t just park a teammate in the zone waiting for the puck it’s not fair to the defending team.

    Yeah hockey gets tiring quick because you are on ice which has no friction, so you have to expend a bunch of energy to get your legs moving again after each time you stop, which you do a lot bc the game is fast paced and changes direction constantly. Usually after 1-3 minutes playing hard you need a break which is why hockey has shifts instead of substitutions.

    The thing about the bag skate is that if you "coast", meaning that, you glide on your skate without actually moving your legs, the coach gets mad and makes you skate even harder.
    The bag skate is essentially constant sprinting on the ice moment after moment with constant stops and starts.
    You need to make quick two-foot stops, transition into the other direction as fast as you can, then stop and transition back the other way. It's not just the fast skating that wears you down in a bag-skate, it's the constant starting and stopping.

    Yeah, suicide pass is like a lob to a receiver in linebacker range. Every now and then someone gets hammered. Quick passing can prevent it.

    Word for Today :
    Exertion
    Hockey is all out, all the time.
    Shifts are quick and energetic.
    Next line over the boards ..
    Cold sports also allow for different types of exertion. Why Football all out sprint style is best in cooler Fall weather.

    Icing is when you shoot it down the ice before the redline in the middle of the ice where they face off puck is dropped to the red line behind the opposing net but if the player of the team that shot puck down ice get to that red line by opposing net first then the icing is negated

    If you’re a player and you shoot the puck from your own zone the puck must past your team blue line, center ice line which is red then it has to pass the opposing blue line without anyone touching the puck. Once the puck passes a small line behind the goaltending net, 2 players for each team can chase for the puck if the opposing side reaches first it’s icing with a whistle, but if you’re team can get past the opposing player first to get the puck, icing is waved off and there won’t be a whistle

    In hockey specifically they go for 2 to 3 minutes since each time for each line so yes it is very tiring thankfully they have so many players that you get to have moments where they can rest for a bit then go back out keep in mind that there are four to five lines of players in any one game per team

    24:01 when you are on the ice you should be giving 100% effort for 45 seconds to a minute and then change. A Bag skate would be similar to the practice after a football game when the coach felt your effort levels weren’t good enough and you are hitting the sled or doing hit its or drops for extended periods of times. If you watch Miracle the whole “again” practice is an example.

    the blue section in front of the net is called the crease and no player is allowed any body part inside of the crease unless goalie interference will be called on a goal calling it back. there are exceptions such as a player being pushed in where it is not against the rules to be in the crease. the other thing he was talking abt was the trapezoid which is where the goalie is allowed to play the puck to pass it to another player. if a goalie plays the puck out of a corner the whistle will be blown and im not sure but a penalty may be called

The leagues around here are say: 16 practices and 16 games. All the other guys you will be playing with are new to the sport as well so don't worry about how well you skate. Just skate and skate and skate.

    Actually wrist shots are really comfortable and they can be really deceptive. The curve of your stick does a lot of work on a wrist shot. Not to take away from the players who do it really well of course. However yeah they arent hard from a body perspective its more a technical and accuracy based skill, less difficult physically like strain wise

Ryan Reaves, Nick Deslaurier, Mathieu Olivier, Radko Gudas, Wayne Simmonds, Nikita Zadorov, John Scott, Boko Imama... check em out! Snap shot is like if the stick doesn't leave the ice, but it's more of a windup than a wrist shot. They do have some skills in hockey. Every time I think I can do X, I remember that I'd have to do it while spinning around on ice skates? wtf...

    As someone who plays (not professionally, not even close), if your legs aren't moving in a bag skate, you're going again. You may as well be running because not moving your legs aka "coasting" will usually lead to a bag skate. It often follows a poor effort as opposed to just a poor performance.

    Bag skates are like running suicides in football practice. As for tiring. Go to a rink and skate around at your own pace. See how tired you are after that. Now think about these guys and girls in pads and going as fast as they can hitting each other. They usually try to beout there for minute or so. Also another part of icing is the team that iced the puck those players have to stay out there for the face-off in their zone. Kinda of an added punishment so they are really tired if they have been out there awhile

    Not really applicable to nhl but “bender” is a common term for a player that is bad at hockey, specifically if they’re bad at skating. I think it comes from how a poor skater will have their legs bent in and they look very awkward therefore they’re a bender.

He elevates his game when crosby is out of the lineup and he’s third in active points currently. he also has the best playoff run of any active player in 2009, which is the most dominant playoff run by anybody not named Mario or Wayne .
