Leaders from Cherokee and Navajo nations speak out

  • Leaders from the two largest tribes in the country discuss issues of sovereignty and public policy. Tensions mount at Chaco Canyon over resource development. The Indian Child Welfare Act is personal for an Oklahoma family, and a Dakota man who changed the genre of American Indian art.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced new federal protections for the sacred site called Chaco Canyon in early June. The UNESCO world heritage site, located in New Mexico near the four-corners area, is a sacred place to many pueblos and the Navajo Nation. For the next 20 years, the government will not allow any new oil and gas leases on federal lands around a 10 mile buffer zone. The decision does not affect already existing leases, but still is not welcomed by Navajo people in the area. Aliyah Chavez was there at the protest on June 11. Chavez interviewed Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren on a few days after the blockade at Chaco Canyon. He mentioned both the action and withdrawal.
Chuck Hoskin Jr. was reelected a principal chief of the Cherokee Nation earlier this month. ICT’s Pauly Denetclaw has this interview, recorded June 7.
The U.S. Supreme Court issued an opinion on the Indian Child Welfare Act last week. Upholding the law is a victory for tribal sovereignty - and it’s personal to an Oklahoma family. Dacoda McDowell-Wahkapehe explains.
Oscar Howe, a Dakota artist born in 1915, changed the genre of American Indian art. Visitors get a rare glimpse of his work this summer at the South Dakota Art Museum. ICT’s Shirley Sneve has this report.

I am Yunwiya, Numanah, and Ndee. I have often wondered why, with all our resources do we not unify as Indigenous under one peaceful banner. Let our current Tribes become the Clans of one Nation. Then I see the Allottees, the lawmakers, the oil companies. I remember necessity and greed are powerful. Unifying will allow us to responsibly tackle shared problems. We can rely on each other. We are Family after all. Peace be with all and blessings to our Mother.

@@andecap1325 Correct. Chaco Canyon was the home of the Anasazi for less than 300 years. They came from the south (Mexico or Central America), conquered the Pueblo People and made them all slaves. They forced the Pueblo People to build the walls of their own prison that still stand today. They were NOT Navajo or any other tribe indigenous to that area. In fact all other tribes and clans for hundreds of miles feared and hated the Anasazi. The Anasazi worshipped the darkness and regularly performed torture and human sacrifices on the Pueblo People. Navajo history says that the Anasazi were utterly destroyed by the gods because they were so evil, never to be seen again. Chaco translates to "Tears and pain". You should probably read real history, because you clearly don't know the truth of what happened. No matter how much feel good nonsense you spout, it doesn't change the facts that they brought that on themselves. The settlers did it in self defense. They didn't take the land until several border towns were annihilated over the course of 2 centuries. The natives were the aggressors there. The land the settlers held prior to then was NEVER claimed by anyone other than the settlers themselves. Doesn't take much research to find this info.

Sickening too many things to list. Seems to me no matter what history you search, there is a theme of those that have morals try to make it better for their people and because not all people are moral even in smaller people groups, chaos and change happens in all the carnage no one cares that someone else tried to make a difference. The only people that are remembered for what they actually did or said are evil, and the good ones get misquoted or misrepresented and used to legitimize the most grotesque human thoughts. Many examples of how this applies are available in many different and diverse situations in history. This does not belong to one group this is global. Bad people take advantage of their own people first, and use them up, when they get well suited to it they exploit the rest of the community even as young children, they lie and covertly hide in plain sight before they strike out on the big things, how do you stop it? Standing up for others, standing up against them is the only thing that ever makes a difference but if you’re standing up against the world of this conflicted world you might find yourself in exile or dead.

This story brings me great grief. Essentially, if the US Government and four corners states would address the needs of Tribal Nations in the greater US Sonoran area, ie, water, internet, green energy projects, and educational needs, I believe all of this infighting could be avoided.
Also, It pains me to see that the "Church" is still. to this day, so willing to proselytize the "Good Word" of Christianity but will not step in to truly make a difference in the lives of first families living on Reservation lands. It is my belief that:
Water rights, language and history education,
Sovereign Democratic Mineral Rights and an equal voice in State and National bills that affect Tribal sovereignty are integral to keeping the peace amongst Fist Nation peoples but also continuing the foundations already built by our ancestors.

I'm Uncompahgre, Northern Ute. Our tribe benefits from Oil & Gas greatly! Might I suggest looking into directional drilling? Lease locations can be off the protected land, and the drill pipe underneath it. It might solve all problems.

Why are we STILL having discussions about what #ESO's think another people think or need? Why can't we protect the land and in that federal funding, ensure the locals have retraining, jobs long & short term .... and the transfer of ALL parts of this FULLY #precolumbianAmerican world heritage site is interpreted, managed, excavated, surveyed, studied, maintained, tourguided by professionally compensated & employed Native, specially locals

Not giving a seat at the table, and opening the door to future unilateral decisions is a problem. Besides I have seen Deb H in the hearings live. Her inability to answer basic questions or unwillingness to do so, despite her serious responsibilities is astonishing. You cannot watch her and her department too carefully.

It breaks my heart in so many ways how badly the indigenous people have been treated. A peaceable people who have been hurt since the day they met the foreigner. How they had beautiful land, were respectful to the animals and land and are good stewards. They were pushed off the good land and given bad lands. So they did what they had to do to survive on what they were given. They had their children taken to boarding schools, weren't allowed to do traditional celebration, stopped the children from learning traditions. Makes me sick with grief, yet here they are loving and forgiving and humble. Then they are having their bad lands violated as if the land given them really wasn't theirs. Just wish the government would wake up and help these people better than they do
They're not throw away or door mats, they're beautiful people with the amazing history and love for the things we all should be like. Agape ❤️

  • @hordesCoffee
    @hordesCoffee 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Folks may disagree with my view, point on this matter. I'm only thinking for what's best us, our heritage and the future. We nolonger live in those times. Because in those days. It was the horse, the mule, and the cattle. Now, it's mechanical horses and technology. We all have to face this new change at some point in our lives, and it can be challenging at times. We should come together with an agreement 🤝 that works for both of us. But, we should never forget the strives, struggles and the work that our people have accomplished that our ancestors did for us and for the other. The future that our creator gave to us, is now being shared. Now is the time to give the final say to the elders of the tribes and not just the people. And the US Government must recognize that the land they share with us be a remembrance to the all creator. I do not know how to do this or what is involved. But we must have transportation. Otherwise there will be no meetings, pow pows, tribal council meetings, etc. Maybe these big oil companies should be apart of ritual to give an offering to the all creator and be present in some ceremonies that are Otherwise forbidden. Because now we share this land with all. That is my personal take on this matter.

After all this time trying to save sacred sites over generations, it seems finally the oppressor has won.
Make folks dependent upon your "gold" and you've got them. (Not to mention the years of grinding down people through "divide and conquer"tactics. )
Finally, finally, a Native person is in the government fighting for the sacred and now she's the enemy.

Ok, wait, NO Native person wants the land misused. Why isn't the question, what do these families need? The are OBVIOUSLY financially struggling. Do they have Mazlow's base needs met? Are they people who #SCOTUS told today they have no right to clean running water? If so, why not budget in a comprehensive water infrastructure program.... then offer PAID onthejob retraining so these locals can stay home and have careers locally that cud translate later to small busines skill sets needed on rez. Also .... why in 21C are ALL the professionals at chaco canyon #ESO's? Worse so calledwhite ppl who are dismissive of local staff & their cultural knowledge.
We LIVED at Chaco Canyon Dec 2022 - for a few weeks. These families live on an edge homeless, city people cannot fathom. Us, drydocked in a nice rv for a few weeks without funds.... STILL cannot fathom. ❤
