How To Fix Google Voice Assistant (No Voice Input Fix, Only Text Response)

- With the new Android 13 update, the google voice assistant has gone haywire and it no longer prompts with a voice response, instead it's now asking you to type in your request or click on the microphone button.
This quick and easy fix will show you how to get your Google Voice assistant working again like it was before!
Recorded and solved on a Google Pixel 6. Should also work for Samsung and other Android devices.
This didn't work for me, but clearing storage did.
Could you run us through what you did? I'll pin the comment and hopefully it works for others.
@@thehousemann Yes, of course. On Samsung S23 Ultra, SETTINGS ==> APPS ==>GOOGLE == >STORAGE==> CLEAR DATA. And then I repeated with "Assistant" app.
Hi Marty - I do not see where there is an "Assistant App" in the settings - I have to go into the "Google Services" in my settings. Samsung did have me download the Google Assistant App from the Google Playstore, which I thought was odd, but I am a bit "techno challenged". This app has only been on my phone for a few days. I am definitely going to clear my data to see if that helps, but the Samsung rep may have done that - he was going thru a lot (90 minutes) before saying I had a software issue.@@MartyZaluski

I ask it a question but it no longer responds with voice, only text.
Did you follow the steps in the video? The other option is to clear the cache on the Google app, Uninstall it and then reinstall

I enter a voice command, but it only replies in text, instead of voice, as it di before.
This was a savior. I have pixel 7 and was relying on the assistant heavily. After the things were broken things were a bit messy. This video is the solution to that problem. Thanks

it wasn't the same case for me, but it was definitely on the microphone permission. On the microphone permission screen, I selected "don't allow", then chose "allow only while using the app" and it fixed my issue.
Yea the problem with android is that there's so many variations depending on version as well as manufacturer differences. But I'm glad to hear it ended up working for you

My Android Voice Typing will not initialize unless I am online, either data or WiFi. None of the online help mentioned this.
That's correct. Google Voice assistant does require an internet connection to function.
I accessed activate mic according to instructions because the mic showed not working but after the feature to turn on or off shows, it is blank and do not have ability to either turn on or off. What to do?

There's a few that it doesn't work for.
"Hate" is a pretty strong word.
accessing the mic to either turn on or off does have capability to do either, what to do?
Check your permissions for the app and check to make sure you have "always allow microphone"

Unfortunately it's not a sure fire way. It's helped plenty, but also had reports of it not working for a small batch of folks

Just swipe from the right lower side to the left middle
To do what? That just pulls up the active apps. No different from swiping up (Google pixel)

In other words, when I say: "hey Google, turn off the bedroom light," I just really it to do the command and not say: "turning off the bedroom light." The only way to get non verbal responses is.
Custom routines (silence)
Have the control device and the appliance in the same room (ding). The ding is used when the GH you are talking to is in the same room as the light or fan.
What if your phone is locked on the lock screen and u cant type your code to fix it
That seems like a whole other issue not related to this.
When I use Google Assistant it takes me to Google rather than Google Assistant
You just need to change your language. Make sure it's set to a specific region like English (US) not just English and that should solve the issue

Android 13 is just been a freaking disaster if I wasn't afraid of bricking my tablet Id downgrade to 12. The Brain dead stuff they've done to screen navigation with the taskbar and no option to use the classic method they've used for a decade and this stupid voice typing constantly stopping in the middle of sentence with gboard and everything else. These kids just programmed a piece of garbage. No quality control at all w these idiots. Here's the ultimate insult Microsoft couldn't have messed it up this bad.

I just recently updated my new Pixel 7 phone and the voice typing is not working. When I try to say something it's not even writing everything I said or even close to what I said. Do you by any chance know how to fix this?
Try loading up the speech to text settings and ensure your default language is set to English (US)

Do you mean the Google home page? The Google one page? Or the Google voice pop up?
Depending on your phone it could be different. On mine, you'd want to goto settings - gestures - power button hold - and change what you'd like it to do from there.

Boy, based on the reviews, I had high hopes as my Google Assist will not place phone calls - it takes the command, says "alright" and nothing!!! I have spent hours trying to get this fixed - Samsung spent an hour and half trying to figure things out and finally said it was most likely a software problem - fortunately, my phone is still under warranty so I am going to attempt to exchange it!! It has been working fine until several days ago. I had high hopes for this fix. Your instructions were so clear and were so easy to follow - just did not do the trick :(

Yea sorry. It doesn't seem to be a fool proof solution. The Google Assistant seems to glitch out with the ocasional update. Think we just got one two weeks ago that may be causing this.

Tap Settings. Accessibility. To get a sound after you say 'Hey Google', turn on Play start sound. To get a sound after Google Assistant stops listening, turn on Play end sound.

None of your things in the video helped. I fixed it my self by thinking smart. I removed Google. And reinstalled it. Then it wanted me to setup google assistant again. After that i can now hear the google again.

Another option is to Uninstall and reinstall the Google app.
Google voice to text is the worst I've ever seen, are there any options other than google? Anything even slightly accurate would be a bonus.
Really? I find it significantly more accurate than Alexa. That's really the only other alternative, or Bixby if you're on a Samsung product.

Another fix is to clear the cache. Uninstall and reinstall the Google app.
Wished this fix had worked for me but it's been a useless app since the beginning of 2022. Checking to see if the assistant works after every update is getting tiresome and futile.

When I clicked on this, I was looking for ways to make the mic button work for assistant again.
I don' t like to have to say "Hey Google" whenever I need something. I much preferred clicking the mic button and then telling it what to do. Now, in 2024 February, they've removed that functionality from the mic button, so that anything you say simply turns into a google search instead of the assistant taking over.
The assistant still works, mind you. But now it's only voice activated, which sucks donkey balls.
You can still type. I have a Pixel 6, so I press and hold the power button to bring up the assistant (it comes up as voice) but you can click the keyboard icon in the lower right when it pops up to type
@@thehousemann I don't want to type. I just want to wake google assistant with a button press, as I was used to doing until Google just changed it. But yeah, I've found the settings for making the power button wake the assistant, so I guess I'll be using the power button from now on.
