Welcome to another Fake Amp Friday! Today, we're diving deep into a plugin that's changing the game in the world of amp modeling. I'm about to introduce you to the Neural Amp Modeler plugin by the brilliant Steven Atkinson. This plugin, fueled by AI-driven deep learning, promises to challenge the biggest names in the game like Kemper, Quad Cortex, and more. Oh and also, did I mention that it's completely FREE?! But can it truly live up to the hype? Let's find out if this is the amp modeler we've all been waiting for!
There's a bit of buzz on the internet about the Neural Amp Modeler plugin so I wanted to put it to the test. I''m taking you through my unfiltered first encounter with the Neural Amp Modeler plugin. We'll dissect its sound and performance to see how it stacks up. And I think you're going to like it. This amp modeler is SO good.
Then I'll take you through the NAM plugins modeling website called "Tone Hunt." Inside, you'll discover an array of thousands of free Amp Models, IRs, and pedals to find the perfect guitar tone you've been looking for.
Ready to get hands-on? I'm guiding you step by step through seamlessly integrating the Neural Amp Modeler into your DAW setup. Get the insider tips on selecting amps and IRs for that sweet spot sound.
What about pedals? Let's push the boundaries and connect my pedalboard directly into the Neural Amp Modeler plugin to see how the models hold up when pedals are introduced to the equation. Will it sound the same as my real amp?
Finally, we'll close out with some Pros and Cons for the Neural Amp Modeler and spend some time reflecting on how far amp modeling technology has come. We're in an era where the Neural Amp Modeler could redefine the game. I'm excited about the tech, and how AI Deep Learning can change the game of guitar amplifier modeling.

What did you all think? Is this the fake amp to rule them all?
My man why dont you profile your best gear and give them to your subscribers?
Soundswise, it's really good, although I'm going by a Dollar General bluetooth speaker, so reality's mileage may vary.
I'm not sure if it's "fair" to cite a paid vst, but IMO, "Amp Room" by the dev "Soft Tube" (sic..?) is my fave, soundswise. Particularly the Fenders and Voxes, I can dial in/nail the cruddy, disgusting, rebellious-sounding "edge of distortion" sounds I need in order to perpetuate the 1 and 1/2-chord "I wannabe 1966" garage rock "songs" I do.
Really great video! Thanks for doing a demo and a walkthrough!
Thanks so much!! I appreciate it! :)
Welcome dude! I'm still hooked after trying it early last year.
NAM is available on the Mod Audio Dwarf. I’ve also heard of NAM being installed in Raspberry Pi’s that are designed to be multi effects processors.
I really like Bailey's voice. He definitely gives you some good input😊
She was the tone Queen!!
Good review, was able to get important info quick and easily. thanks.
Thank you!! Glad it was helpful!
Great rundown! I think I agree it might have the slightest edge over ToneX/NeuralDSP in terms of sound quality/realism. The open source nature of NAM is so intriguing...really feel like the first company to implement this into a well-executed hardware pedal will be sitting on a gold mine! Poly effects is working on implementing it into their firmware for the Beebo and should be available really soon - eager to see how that goes.
Thank you Andrew!! It's definitely close. I have a comparison video coming up, and I'll just say this... the results were actually pretty surprising. To me, at least lol- Either way, it's really cool to see what this technology can do and the possibilities it's unlocking. Thank you for letting me know I needed to check it out.
@@JustinMuncy Awesome, can't wait to see that one! Love the fake amp friday idea too btw haha!
This just turned my Mac into my main rig using MainStage. Wow. I'll use this in Logic Pro and live in MainStage.
Haha nice!!
@@JustinMuncy Yep. Gonna find a good wet/dry/wet combination and go from there
Nice video man, you got pretty damn good sounds. I've been using it for a good while now. Just to add on the "portability" of it I've also been messing around with the NAM port on the poly Beebo (ig it's open source), and it already sounds great though it's still just beta firmware. It's great though, just a little research on tonehunt and you're set. Fairly futuristic ngl, now you can basically record a fairly pro sounding song with just a guitar and sme cables
Thanks so much!! Yeah- the possibilities for NAM are pretty cool. Excited to see where it goes :)
Can you add amp sim profiles of the amp VSTs in your DAW onto the Modeler? Or is it made to profile only hardware?
This is too cool! I’m sure a Nux or Joyo company will get on this bandwagon soon and offer a pedal where you can just dump all this stuff into and place in your pedalboard. The possibilities are astounding!
Technically the Nux Studio pedal has the ability to add an IR to it
I really love the convenience of these kind of plugins. Plug the guitar to my interface, and that's it. No outboard gear really necessary. Although I do plug in to a Digitech FreQout first (to get sustain and feedback at very low volume), but that's it.
Nice Video! You were getting some great tones. Are you using free IRs from Tone Hunt as well for this video or was it your own/ones from York Audio or another 3rd party?
Thanks homie!! Appreciate it. I used all free IRs from tone hunt. The specific amps I used were all listed in the video- all of them were by Amalgam Audio.
for some reason i cant really get a straight audio its like the bass is all the way up but i tried so much i cant figured it out
So much good bails footage in this😍😍😭
Bailey is the true star of the channel. That’s no secret-
At 5:20 what amp model and cab ir are you using for your les paul rhythm guitar sound. Dope stuff!
Thanks so much! I don’t remember since I made this almost a year ago now. I do know I used the Fender Tweed and the AC30TB in stereo for all of the parts. I think I had my deep six and moonshine going into the amps. Although the amps were breaking up a little so it could’ve been the Belle Starr instead of the moonshine…
hi does anyone know how to connect this to a audio interface on Mac?
1. fantastic video! You explained this with ease, so I subscribed.
2. I really dig your playing, even though I am more of a metal/hardcore guy I really dig lush, rich sounding rock tones.
3. What kind of dog is Bailey? Thanks :)
I wanted to point out something about the cons-- this product is supposed to be for studio usage, so having a less-than-intuitive setup of plugin to website to VST package to folder to DAW, is pretty normal! I think today musicians are spoiled by the convenience of plug-and-play pedals and software, but I think putting a few minutes of thought into how you want to set this product up will help you prepare for recording with it. Gigging with NAM would be cool, but that's specifically what TONEX is designed for.
Thanks so much!! Appreciate it! She's a rescue dog, so we aren't sure exactly what mix of breeds she is. But we think she's a Shiba Inu / Lab mix or a Shiba Cattle Dog Mix. She's the sweetest :)
Maaaan your guitar tones sound so good, I had to download NAM to try this out! I'm having the hardest time getting Impulse Responses that sound good though.. did you use all the same Amalgam IRs that they paired with their different NAM amp captures, and use the built in IR loader in NAM? I wanna try and learn how to get sounds similar to yours first just to make sure I'm using NAM and IR's the right way!😂
Thanks so much!! Yup! I just used their paired IRs loaded into NAM for this video!
@@JustinMuncy Alright thanks a ton man! Really appreciate the response/info and the great video!
4:56 what pedal gives you the drums? Or is it a model for NAM?
I programmed those with a plug-in. I think I used Native Instruments Abbey Road Modern Drummer… or Native Instruments Studio Drummer. I can’t remember which I used since it was a bit ago, but both are fantastic!
Well done kid. I've shared your video among older sceptics. They probably couldn't care less :). NAM is incredible, gonna be interesting to follow for the future. Expecting more NAM-able hardware units to arrive soon.
Thanks!! I'm sure it can't be far away.
Hi Justin.....How do you run a delay or other modulations with this?
Either with plug-ins, or you could run your pedalboard into your audio interface, then into it. Or you could even convert your signal from the DAW back to line level and then route that into pedals and then send it back into your audio interface.
Does it just simulate amps? Or can it do pedals at the same time like the qc?
I think there’s an element of pedal capture, but it not an all in one unit like the QC
OK, I'll be honest here, Bailey is the one that influenced me to like and subscribe here... I'm jus saying..
That's a perfect legitimate reason to subscribe. She was certainly my favorite part of the channel!!
9:30 that’s the expression I make when other around me are shouting OR u happy at something
1:15 Sounds fantastic.
Thanks Joe!!
HOWWWWWWWWWWWW did you get that tone at 4:56 man I've been trying to replicate it for SO LONGGG!!! It's coming close but not the beauty I'm hearing here. Please help me outtttt.......
Thank you so much!! I used the two different Amalgam captures in stereo. So one amp on the left channel, the other amp on the second channel. I can’t remember… but I’m pretty sure that was just the Jackson audio Belle star into a light room verb from the bigsky into the amp sim 👍🏻
@@JustinMuncy Thank You for the answer. I'll try this now.
@@JustinMuncy What preset of tonehunt do you use for that sound ?? sounds awesome !
the great thing is that you are not forced to sell the sound
sorry , doesn't make any sense what I said. . do make more sense! with more sence!
I need to 2 find more
beet , is beat.
they need to do this for eq and compressors etc
That would be cool!! Not sure about EQs, but there are plugins that effectively do this with compressors, but they're emulations vs captures. It's pretty cool though because you can set your compression settings and then scroll through various compressors to find the one with just the right sound you're after without having to load up other plug-ins!
Latency is always my biggest worry about software like this. But it does sound fantastic
I think with plugins, latency issues might have more to do with your computer than the plugin nowadays- But that's definitely a top concern amongst guitarists! I personally didn't notice anything significant until my computer started to get bogged down.
@@JustinMuncy yes I meant using a computer + interface + plugin to replace a dedicated modeler or amp
I did not noticed the high CPU usage (MacBook Pro 16" with M3 Max) at all.
BTW; you can gig with it easily, I have a flight case with enough room for my Mac Mini, a SmallHD Smart 7 monitor, Apollo 4X and an expression pedal, it is easy to setup and sounds great!
Anyone got a really good slash preset
What burst is your Gibson ?
Desert Burst!
Yeah but which DAW / software are you using ?
Logic!
Dude!!!! 4:58 what is the song????????
Oh! It’s just a demo I came up with!! Glad you liked it-
@@JustinMuncy Can I ask you to sing on it, at least try to record vocals and lyrics?
Well, I play live with an IPad, an audio interface and a bluetooth pedal to switch channels, so, at lease 1 person is doing that ^^
Thanks for the vid, great subject, great editing, great vid ;)
Hahaha. Someone IS doing it- thanks for watching and commenting!!
"It's August and it's 87 degrees out" - While it's 107 where I'm at -_- lol. Great video, definitely want to check this out. How do you think it fairs to the Neural Plugins? I use Cory Wong's plugin personally, and I think it's an interesting comparison since it's in the same market.
My heart breaks for you in 107 degrees. That's a no from me... LOL. Well, I've never used the Neural Plugins, but I assume sound wise they have to be pretty similar to what's in the Quad Cortex, and I thought this was pretty competitive. I'll have to hear them side by side, but with the right amp model, the sound quality is pretty darn close.
So how much for this completely free amp sim plug in?
Literally nothing.
So literally nothing? And how much does that cost I wonder?@@JustinMuncy
there's a standalone app too, don't really need the daw
it sounds really good in a recording but in the room? Nothing sounds right through monitors or full range.
Also why would you be running so many instances of it? Print your tracks!?
Running a true stereo setup per guitar track + layered guitar tracks for a production. I would print tracks for mixing of course, but when I'm writing and recording parts, I don't want to have to interrupt my flow to bounce down tracks. I run similar amounts with other guitar amp plugins and haven't had this problem-
10 fins
Does it go to 11?
That’s why it’s free.
87 degrees is comfy. Try 117!
😂😂😂 no thank you-
I cannot believe this is free. ToneX is hosed
Hahaha. It's definitely a very competitive option-
Have you tried Rhino?
Nope! I've actually never heard of it-
@@JustinMuncy might be worth checking out, it’s made by AuroraDSP, and it’s available for iOS which is nice
The elephant in the room is going to be latency effecting performance and feel while trying to record.
I really didn’t notice anything significant while using the plug-in actually! There’s also a low latency record mode in logic that helps quite a bit.
I've used logic and Mac to record and I agree somewhat. It wasn't as bad as a lot of other computer daw combos that I've used. Nearly all of my other PC based daw experiences (recording guitar live with plugin active in the box) that didn't have built in DSP processors gave me bad issues with latency though.
Sub....Nice
Thank you so much!!
Why is this free?
It’s open source
It would be nice to put the links so the people dont have to Google it
Check the description
Whole new level of lazy over here 😂
Maybe just dont be lazy af
Huh? A laptop and a small interface is a lot of gear to lug around to a gig? Dude. It literally fits in your backpack.
A full fledged amp and a set of speakers doesn't. Also, if you have multiple guitarists, you can run multiple cabs with this. And you can even have different cabs for different songs even if you're just one singular guitarist.
I see no downside to this in terms of lugging gear. Its hella compact.
Also, why would you run 15 different instances of it? Unload the instances you're not using...
I kind of prefer amp VSTs which dont require one to have to customize your computer and have to visit websites in order for it to make sounds.
Ha!!
It's a free plugin for... what?
Amp Modeling. So any sort of DI guitar recording really-
Maybe you could play more guitar and talk less off topic in your videos, just a suggestion but it might help you
What was off topic?
BOOO.. Schuffham is the way to go
Yeah, no
