I was living in Hawaii (where I am from, but lived most of my adult life on the mainland) when Stuart Adamson killed himself there. It was sad and more than a little shocking.
I was a fan of the music and wish they had been more successful in the U.S.

A hugely underrated band. Could best be described as Celtic Rock with their distinctive Scottish sound and bagpipe guitars. They released a whole load of fab songs similar to this one in the early to mid 80s.

@@Chicagoclee I don't think they're as well known these days as they should be. Say the name 'Big Country' and I imagine a lot of younger music fans have never even heard of them.
As a fan of Stuart Adamson since 78 and a fan of BC from day 1, and as a friend of Stuart, (they are from my hometown) please let me tell you, categorically and unequivocally, IT'S NOT FUCKING BAGPIPES, NOTHING LIKE BAGPIPES IN ANY WAY! The sound Stuart and Bruce are invoking here is that of the Scottish folk music that they, and I grew up hearing in Fife, which is played on fiddle and accordion. Bagpipes in Scotland are EXCLUSIVELY an instrument of war, of the military. Sorry, rant over but the 'B' word has been plaguing and pissing off the band for nearly 40 years now.
@@paulsmith2516 Er, I said "bagpipe guitars" not "bagpipes" (though even that would be a misnomer, as it was clearly just some sort of sound effect they were using with regular electric guitars).
They never used bagpipes but were renowned for being able to make their guitars sound like bagpipes.

Their first album 'The Crossing' is a masterpiece. Big Country were truly unique. They were all great musicians individually - but together they were special. The rhythm section of Mark Brzezicki on drums and Tony Butler on bass laying the foundations for the searing double lead guitars of Bruce Watson and singer Stuart Adamson. RIP Stuart.
That album from start to finish is flawless IMO.... The Crossing is one of the most criminally underrated albums of the 80s hands down..
My mum who's not with me any more was Scottish and Big Country were played loud and proud in our house, fantastic band with great songs. Thanks for the nostalgia, makes me happy and sad

I do and I have Scottish roots from Dunfermline. In fact my maternal grandmother was a Muir as was Stuart’s first wife. It would be cool if I was related to her and Stuart’s kids.
YESSSS!!! I voted for this one, I’m so glad it won! I just knew you’d get the message and appreciate this one. From my limited knowledge of this band, I can tell you that they were Scottish and they purposely made the guitar sound like bagpipes. It’s genius. This one also helps me get through tough times, it reminds me to look for the light in the darkness. I’m happy you also listened to the audio version because it sounds so wrong without that instrumental intro! And that “Come up screaming!” at the beginning. SO GOOD.
Stuart was inspired by the Scottish folk music he heard growing up. He wanted to bring that same feeling to Big Country music. The first version of the band had a keyboard player. That version was kicked off of an Alice Cooper UK tour.
Check out "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy. Not sure exactly why, but I have always felt these two songs were reminiscent of each other. I'm guessing you will love that song too.

A song with an unique sound and just makes you feel good. This gem was released in 1983 by the Scottish rock band Big Country. Lead singer and guitarist William Stuart Adamson died on December 16 2001 at the age of 43. Gone way too soon. RIP William.
Stuart has and will always been my lyrical and musical hero. They had a song for every aspect of my life and wrote the soundtrack for it.
BC never wrote a bad song when he was at the helm.

Unfortunately it also had too many bands I liked whose lead singers killed themselves. I guess there's a reason people get into the arts... trying to get those feelings out. Doesn't always fix everything it seems. :(
I'm Scottish, this song speaks to my very soul. If I could make a recommendation, I would say you (or anyone else) should check out Stuart Adamson's previous band, Skids.
I LOVE THIS SONG. I am an 80's girl and nostalgia, yeah, it definitely brings it back. When it came out, I was a teenager in high school. I would love to go back and visit that decade for a day or 2. I love love love the 80's.0

Great Scottish band, mistakenly thought of as a one hit wonder but they actually had a big following. They used various techniques to mimic violins and bagpipes on the guitar. One of the things they used was the E-bow, which you hold next to guitar strings to cause them to vibrate. It's definitely worth checking out more of their music. They were also a fantastic live band.
They're still on the go despite the tragic loss of Stuart Adamson!
Yes! Kills me that I never got to see them live, but I've watched a ton of live footage that blew me away.
I think they're only considered a one-hit-wonder in the US. In the UK they had plenty of hits and were contemporaries of U2 and Simple Minds. The late, great DJ John Peel once rated Stuart Adamson as second only to Jimi Hendrix as a guitarist.
Personally they're one of my all time favourite bands and made so many fantastic songs.

Forgot to mention that the iconic bagpipe sound you're hearing is really from a guitar, using a device called an EBow.
The sound is actually made using an MXR pitch transposer guitar pedal. They did use the Ebow but not as often as claimed in the press. Most noticeably they used it on the songs The Storm and also Porroh Man from the debut album The Crossing but for the sound that most call the bagpipe sound it was the MXR pedal and the technique of using the open drone string where the string above the one being played was left to ring as it were when played.

I bought myself an E-Bow with an Amazon gift card I got for Christmas last year. It’s not very easy to use, but you can produce some amazing sounds with it.

This is one of the best reactions I have ever seen merely due to the fact that you actually decided mid video to check out the audio version which is literally 10X better. Your complete lack of caring for standard protocol like others follow is perfect in this case because now you showed alot of people how different studio versions can literally be for not only this band but many artists as well. The lyric, "pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming" really speaks to me today. One month ago today I lost my Dad to covid. I haven't heard this song in many years and just a few days ago it came on the radio and it really spoke to me. I am thankful for this song and I love your breakdown and reaction to listening to this song. I know that I will feel better with time, I will always feel a void, missing my Dad. Tony Butler is the bassist and is crazy underrated. This band was sadly too good. The lead singer Stuart Adamson was a huge influence to the band U2. U2 guitarist The Edge said that the early work of Stuart’s from the band The Skids made most other music from the time seem mundane and insignificant. Bono from U2 once said that he wished he had written songs that Big Country did. That’s high praise from very influential musicians.
The guitarist that Stuart made look the most mundane and insignificant was Edge himself. Stuart was a truly inspirational and unique guitarist whereas Edge simply can't even play guitar, his bank of electronic effects play it for him. U2 simply don't have a career without BC, full stop.
I remember the front page of Melody Maker had Stuart on the cover. The headline - "The man who invented The Edge".
@@paulsmith2516 That's true. Edge was in the crowd for some Skids gigs, and readily admits that Stuart's open string playing caused him to completely change his style of playing.
Their albums "The Crossing" and "Steeltown" are two of the best albums of the 80s. This band was criminally underrated in the US.
Seen these guys live and been a fan for 40 years. Have every album and single. Also Facebook friends with their bass player Tony Butler who is gracious enough to answer questions on recording techniques and gear. Also Facebook friends with their drummer Mark Brzezicki and again….responds to fans. This was their first single. Almost fell off my chair when I first heard this and the rest is history. Never seen anyone do a reaction to Big Country. Their lead singer Stu Adamson committed suicide in December 2001. This really brings back memories. Totally underrated band. Bass player Tony Butler and drummer Mark Brzezicki were playing for Pete Townsend prior to Big Country, so that’s why the serious creative chops. Great video brother! Thank you!
Mark also played drums on The Cult's classic album 'Love' and has done loads of session work with a host of big names.
@@speleokeir Yep he is a fantastic drummer...his drumming on the Love title track is legendary; man, that tom-tom roll! Only She Sells Sanctuary wasn't Mark - Nigel Preston before he was sacked - on that album.
Oh yeah and on “ Under A Raging Moon”. He was the drummer through the song, then the last drum solo, then on the outtro with Zak Starkey. His discography outside Big Country is amazing. Same for Tony Butler!
A great Big Country song that I still turn up the volume almost 40 years later! Check out Inwards, Where the rose was sown, Fields of fire, and Chance. All of these dudes were so talented and I was a huge fan in the 80s. RIP Stuart Adamson.

No you know why the 80's was the best decade for music, so much variation. Rock, pop, disco, heavy metal, tecno, rap. We had it all. Also loved the two version reaction, maybe do one a week with Video and studio, or live and studio. Also check out Slade "Run Runaway" for similar vibe
I'm a 70s girl so prefer that decade of music. Heaps of diversity too, even different forms of rock.

Actually, doing a side-by-side comparison of the studio / video version against the audio cut is a stellar idea. Most of us grew up watching these videos on MTV or other earlier sources.

As a Scot, delighted you like them. Their masterpiece is "One Great Thing" - give that a try, you'll love it. "Chance" is a ballad that's very beautiful.

Big country was really underrated for their music. They had a few great albums with most of the tracks being great tunes. Good 80's music!
We went on a family cruise to the Bahamas in 1987. Our dinner partners, (you eat with the same people every night at the formal dinners), and we had the great pleasure of dining with 2 young Scotsman, our own ages, that we became great friends with for many years after! Our very first conversation with them was about this great band. That was all the ice breaker we needed! We loved this band and so did they, of course!

Crazy how there's no bagpipes in this song. That's the genius of Stuart Adamson. That's all on the guitar AND without any bends. Him and Bruce were matched perfectly. You should check out this song at their 1988 Moscow concert.So much energy. RIP Stuart. On a side note, bassist Tony Butler does bass duty with Pete Townshend in the 'Let My Love Open the Door' video.
big country (from scotland) came out in '83, the same year U2 (from ireland) released their breakthrough album WAR.
both albums featured strong rock 'n roll, anthemic melodies, SOARING and prominent guitars, which at the time was not being done, so they kinda got grouped together as the NEW SOUND of modern rock lol.
stuart adamson, big country's vocalist, in the '90s moved to either nashville or memphis and tried unsuccessfully to go into country/western music. somehow he ended up depressed and in honolulu where sadly he took his own life.
Such a great song from back then, the second version is the 12" one from what I recall with the breaks in it.. They had quite a few great tracks on this album, fields of fire, chance, the storm..

Jayvon, from the bottom of my heart thank you for highlighting my hometown heroes, my idols and amazingly my friends, Big Country and not just once but twice! They are indeed Scottish, from Dunfermline in Fife, one of many big artists from our humble wee toon. The only thing I must pull you up on is your comparison of the guitar sound to bagpipes. This is a comparison that has haunted the band since day 1. They, and us fans effing HATE that word. They are actually taking inspiration from the Scottish folk music that they and I grew up hearing. This music is played entirely on fiddle and accordion and that is the tones you are hearing. That said, thank you again for the video and am delighted, but not at all surprised that you liked them. Big Country were huge back in the day, they have an amazing song called “The Storm” which is lyrically and musically brilliant, also check out “Fields of Fire” , “Chance” , “Look Away” to name a few
I'd also add: Restless Natives, The Sailor, The Seer, Just a Shadow, Wonderland... To be honest I love all their stuff, one of my all time favourite bands.

One of my favourite 80's bands. They did the soundtrack for a film called Restless Natives where to young Scottish lads rode round the highlands like highwaymen robbing tourist coaches. Fields of Fire is another good one by them. RIP Stuart Adamson
Literaly one of the most beloved songs in Scotland. Yes the guitarist worked out how to make his song sound like a guitar its great!
The 80's were the decade of the remix! Most songs had an album version, 12" dance mix, radio edit and video version. The most remixed song at least at the time was 2 Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood at 125 remixes.
The "video version" is simply the 7" single version as released. Not everything had 12" or different album mixes either.
Big Country is huge, late Stuart was the kernel of the band that still exists, thanks god; they wrote killer songs : Inwards, 1000 Stars, Harvest Home, Fields Of Fire, Porrohman, The Crossing, Where The Rose Is Sown, Come Back To Me, Rain Dance, The Grate Divide, Just A Shadow, Wonderland to mention a few...
Yes, wonderful songs. In fact, I cannot think of a single tune of theirs that I don't love. And I have all of their stuff.
It's a shame they were so underrated and it was truly sad about Stuart. I was at work when I found out that he had died. Stuart was also a close friend of Mike Peters from The Alarm and Mike does occasionally cover some of Big Country's songs during concerts. A few years ago he went on tour with the remaining members of Big Country and performed what would have been Stuart's role as lead singer and he made a really good job of it.
Another good song for a reaction video would be "Martha's Harbour" by All About Eve. Also, if you can get hold of an audio version of The Mission's "Black Mountain Mist", Julianne Regan, the lead vocalist from All About Eve, performs guest vocals.
The drums in this song are HUGE. Great production by Steve Lillywhite. Glad you checked out the album version of this song too, with the drum intro.

This was the first album I ever bought with my own money at KMart in 1983. I was 13 and am 51 now. It is one of the best debut albums in rock and roll history. If you have not listened to Big Country, The Crossing, you've missed out.

I really hope he will do himself and us a favor and react to The Church, Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen….. I grew up on and still love this genre of awesome music! Love the Furs so much. I’ve been so lucky to see them live three times!

LOVED these guys back in the day. Great energy as a live band. So sad that Stuart Adamson ended up in a bad place and took his life years later.
The audio version you pulled up second is the Extended Play version. A local station around me,WHFS in Annapolis,MD,used to play this version and we loved them for it.

I’m a longtime big fan of Big Country, saw them perform this live many times. Anyone who did not experience a BC gig in the 1980s and 1990s- sorry you missed them.
I think the audio version in this clip is an extended remix, hence the different intro.
The drummer Mark Brzezicki is a technically adept powerhouse. Please listen to their biggest hit Fields of Fire too - he breaks into a military roll at the end. RIP Stuart, never forgotten 💔

Yes, when they first hit the airwaves back in 1983 alot of people mistook their guitars for bagpipes. They have that Scottish folk-rock sound. I love it. They were hugely underated, should of been much bigger. During a time when most popular bands were using synthesizer, they were playing guitars. You should react to another hit of theirs Fields of Fire. Epic song

I knew Stauart Adamson, the lead singer, not very well but played golf with him a few times. The band was from my hometown. They had their roots in punk/new wave and the core of the band had been in a band called The Skids before they formed Big Country.

YESSSS! I'm a long fan of them since their beginnings (I was thirteen!). I have a vivid memory of myself in the record store buying a bunch of their vinyls just because I heard one of their songs on the radio and also periodically inquiring the records store owner if they had put out anything new in the meantime (no Google back then...). Also I remember entering another record store asking "where can I find Big Country records?" and being pointed to the "country music" section of the store with my face going 😒. So glad that younger people now have a chance to get to know Big Country music thanks to your reaction video! Thank you! (Be sure to check out "Hold the heart")
Great song. The second version you listened to sounded more like an extended version. What annoys me about music videos is that they cut out verses, and the end gets cut off, so it's good you listened to the audio.
One of a kind I must say, I remember when I was a kid and my father bought the greatest hits with 17 songs of this band, I think at that time it was criminally underrated I think it in that way today too 22 years after that, because in the radio only this one played sometimes, the version in the video is the radio edit, which came in the Greatest hits album, the Studio version is the one in the crossing album, I love them both because when you hear one and another in Flac one is more minimalist than the other but the other sounds more complete. I love Big Country and I miss Stuart so much, his voice is just amazing.

I love this band, I have their album The Seer on vinyl, the single Look Away did well in SA reached no. 11. And the song King Of Emotion is my favourite, the 80's had variety in music
A truly unique sound, I played their first album so much that I had to re-buy the cassette 3 times because I kept wearing out the tape.
