It’s great to see Anne Bancroft. NOBODY could have played Mrs. Robinson like her. She made that movie.
What's crazy, Dustin Hoffman was cast to play Franz Liebkind in The Producers, for her husband Mel Brooks. The night before filming he got called to audition for The Graduate and got that part as well, so he gave up The Producers.

Anne was super adorable on Password. Seemed so genuine, and looked like she was having so much fun ❤. Must've been a sad loss for Mel when she passed away in 05.

What a pleasure it is to watch these without commercials, three or four at a time. I was a Password fan kid and had to wait for a half hour show once a week in the early days.
We didn't watch much TV growing up but my parents had the second television in The San Fernando Valley at Easter of 1946 or 1947...I was not around yet! However, we always watched Password and To Tell The Truth...

Dustin Hoffman was a bore in the graduate, moody and soulful. After all these years we can see that Mrs. Robinson is really the only interesting role in the movie - as Anne herself said "Why do you think I took it1"

I love the way Ms. Bancroft is concentrating on the game and collaborating with her "stage" partner, even in just this game show. What a pleasure it must have been to perform with someone so attentive and focused!

These early shows were quite loose and freewheeling weren't they? There clearly was a lot of gesticulating and other rule-breaking stuff going on.
Being that the U.S. Dollar has lost 88.39% of it's purchasing power since 1962, an equivalent prize of $1000 in today's terms would be $8,616.85

There's a huge advantage in getting the second clue.
yea i noticed that. It really sucks because the loser always gets the first chance at the next word, so if they don't get it on the first try (which is fairly rare), the team who won the last round gets the '2nd clue advantage'. There was an episode i watched last night with Tom Poston with a lawyer vs a housewife, and the housewife shut out the whole game because she always got/gave epic 2nd clues.
Whoever goes first almost ALWAYS gets hosed on this game.

The contestants are so well dressed compared to today's. I've watched a lot of these shows when it was young and they didn't figure that saying the opposite meaning is actually easier for a win than describing the synonym for the word.
At 8:02 Anne tells contestant Doug "My dear, I think we're in love!". Doug then lets Anne know his wife is in the audience. I've never seen a celebrity gave such quick crush on a contestant! ☺

Ann Bancroft is my favorite actress of all time. She also starred in my favorite movie 84 Charing Cross Road. Second is Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany's. This was a treat to watch!!!!!

Recommend a film that Anne Bancroft did called THE PUMPKIN EATER (1964). Tour-de-Force Performance. Wow!
That is an incredible film. It's such a deep character study on toxic marriages from the woman's perspective. Slender Thread was another one she did. Kinda similar to The Pumpkin Eater (in terms of her character except she plays an American)
at this point Bancroft would have already been dating Mel Brooks. they married in 1964.
That teacher was so anxious it was actually making me irritated. Holy hell... Look at him, rocking constantly back and forth. He couldn't sit still for 2 seconds.
Exceedingly annoying and doing the handsy garbage also. A person could get seasick watching him. Hope he gargled before coming on stage because he was only inches away from the faces. ugh!

Catch Anne Bancroft trying to cheat by spelling the word in sign language (14:34). 😛 No one caught it (prolly not many viewers, either) - Ludden did mention seeing her using gestures but prolly had no idea it was sign lang. A skill she learned in preparation for her role in The Miracle Worker. Pretty sly, but it didn't work.

Anne Bancroft WAS brilliant and definitely beautiful ...beautiful not for some conventional idea of physiognomy but because her kind, attractive face was so consistently alive, so present and expressive; she was always emotionally engaged in whatever moment was before her...and that voice...when those elegant, just-shy-of-studied tones come out, buffered by a hint of her New York origins, you just want to fall backwards into the swimming pool of her soul and drown.
It's also important to remember that at this point both Bancroft and that nice boy from Montreal , Robert Goulet (check out Goulet in 'Robert Goulet in the HIPSTER HAMLET' also on TH-cam; you'll see he wasn't just a pretty crooner but a talented actor who could mix Shakespeare with comedy) were both matches that had been in the box, admired, for some years but had just been struck into flame by the phenomena of their 'breakthrough' roles.

Ya know it's not just the celebrities' and contestants' fault when they do the hand gestures. It's JUST as much Allen's fault, because he is CONSTANTLY telling them no hand gestures but that's ALL he does. He doesn't tell them "If you do it again, you won't be back" or SOMETHING to let them know he's serious. But all he EVER did was simply TELL them. The do it again, he TELLS them. They do it again, he TELLS them. No wonder they kept doing, they knew he was never do anything
But then again, it didn't seem to MATTER how many times Allen said it, Robert kept doing it anyway!!

This episode aired tonight on the city schools cable channel here. Tuned in just before this moment. Saw Anne's spelling 'cozy' in ASL and did a double-take, astonished. Did I really see that? Press record on the cable box, rewound to that moment, and replayed, first at regular speed and then in slow motion. I couldn't make out if anyone on the show @PASSWORD had caught that.
Wife's been interested in ASL for a while, not fluently, but does okay. I immediately went to get her to watch and replayed the 'cozy' part from the beginning, not telling her what had happened. She got it. ;) :D

She absolutely did sign. However if she signs in her personal life it could have been a habit or routine.

A.B. was a crummy player on the Lightning rounds. If the person does not get it after saying "picture" thrice, she should have said "Camera" or "Kodak" or "Polaroid". Not a good episode at all.

What was the word before chip? Somehow, the episode jumped forward several seconds.

The beautiful (and enthusiastic) Anne Bancroft was born Anna Maria Italiano. What's coincidental is the lady contestant's name is Annemarie. I tried to catch her responding every time the host addressed Annemarie, but she never let on. So focused.
And her "The Miracle Worker" co-star's real name was Anna Marie Duke, who was renamed Patty Duke.
I wonder if Crawford has already visited her by this time as requested to accept her Oscar??

I'm not sure if Vespas were popular or known in the US back then, but that's the most famous motorscooter I've ever heard of. That could have been a good clue (unless they were only known in Europe).
The overly handsy and pushy chemistry teacher said: "Risotto", and the "CC" printed words said "Risotto". I have NO idea why he gave that word for a clue to Password "Scooter". 🙃
The clue given was Rizzuto. He was a major league baseball player whose nickname was Scooter. At the time of this broadcast he was a popular sportscaster. Phil Rizzuto.
Cute Anne Bancroft had a really great time with her partner Douglas Smith (The Chemistry Teacher)..If Mr. Smith wasn't married ("Be careful my wife is in the audience") he would have dated Miss Bancroft. At one point in the game she said, "I think we're in love". This is one of my all time favorite episodes.
That "lot" and "plot" stuff was complete BS because theyve used other words in previous episodes that have had parts of the word in it

This is another episode where the rules change. In one past episode, the clue was "beatnik", and the contestant said "beat" and that was allowed. Beat is a part of the answer.

Goulet had a right to complain, the teacher was giving fake clues when he went first to throw him off.
They should have allowed as many words as possible to be guessed in the lightning round rather than just five. Excellent players easily could have guessed seven or eight words correctly. The final lightning round in this episode is proof of that.

When this episode aired, she had played Helen Keller’s teacher on Broadway, teaching Helen to learn sign language eight shows a week for two years in “The Miracle Worker” (and won a Tony Award for her performance) and the movie of it had just been released, for which she got an Oscar nomination. No, ASL is not allowed in Password (or any other hand movements), but her doing it here was clearly out of frustration and a little bit of joking - it was her learned instinct to do ASL and obviously her partner had no idea what she was doing with her fingers.
I saw that too.
