BJK gave a little talk to an audience at the Abbey Road Studio yesterday on 2nd/Aug 2024. He said he is 81 now. He had lots of stories from the old days.
The original version of this song was on Burts Hitmaker album featuring The Breakaways on vocals. It was recorded in London and Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones played on it.
On this day in 1965 {May 28th} Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas performed "Trains and Boats and Planes" on the British ITV network's weekly musical variety program, 'Ready Steady Go!'... At the time the song was at position #20 on the United Kingdom's Official Top 50 Singles chart, two weeks later it would peak at #12 {for 1 week}... The week it peaked at #12, Burt Bacharach's original version was at #6 on the U.K. Singles chart, and two weeks later it peaked at #4 {for 1 week}... One year later on July 31st, 1966, Dionne Warwick's covered version would peak at #22 {for 1 week} on the U.S. Billboard's Top 100 chart... Between 1963 and 1965 the group had six records on the U.K. Singles chart, five made the Top 10 with two* reaching #1, "Bad To Me" for three weeks in August of 1963 and "Little Children" for two weeks in March of 1964... Leader Billy J. Kramer, born William Howard Ashton, will celebrate his 77th birthday in three months on August 19th, 2020... * The group just missed having a third #1 record when their "Do You Want To Know A Secret" peaked at #2 for two weeks in May of 1963, for the two weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those two weeks was "From Me To You" by The Beatles...
I saw this band when I was 14 and stood a couple of feet from Billy and I tried to get autograph but so many fans and I was so awstruck❤ crying because of his many wonderful pop songs.
I do not know old I was when I heard this song, but I was only born in the 70's. Then last year suddenly the line Trains, boats and planes popped into my head. I googled it and found Billy J. Kramer, do not even know if i ever heard his name. (Probably did when I was just a tot). Funny, now it is one of my daughters' best loved songs. And she is not even 20. She can not sometimes get it out of her head!!
CAROLINE FLASHBACK just radioed this version of Bacharach's immortal masterpiece. For decades it has comforted anyone - including me - who had to say goodbye to a loved one. On a railway platform, a pier, an airport gate, or in a morgue.
Civil rights, too much sexual freedom/ feminism, the Vietnam war & liberal politics gave too much freedom to youth born in the 70’s which brought classlessness and no respect…just drugs and wasted lives for many kids from broken homes. Now crime and murder rule.

He had a great start not only , by having Lennon and McCartney write hit hit songs for him,but also John helped him with his stage name, and he had Brain Epstein as his manager.
just listened to news regarding the passing away of burt bacharach absolutely gutted I try to write songs myself but now have no chance of ever meeting my idol it's my birthday on Sunday difficult to celebrate peter
I love Dione Warwick, but to me, this version is superior. I used to date Hal David's maid when he lived on Midwood Cross in Northwood, in Roslyn, NY. Of course, Burt Bacharach wrote this and Hal arranged it for Dione Warwick
They left out the bridge, "You are from another part of the world, you had to go away but I waited here like I said I would, I waited here but where are you now......Trains and boats and plans took you away.......YOU DO KNOW BILLY J HAD A VERY LIMITED VOCAL RANGE .
Impossible to first hear this song by Dionne Warwick and then be able to fully appreciate it by any other artist, not that I do not like Billy J. Kramer (and The Dakotas).
He must have been on a diet he is so slim and handsome here -- poor Billy had a tendancy to put on weight --- But he is still around and making music in the US.
Sometimes it's deliberate to avoid problems with copyrights. I think this clip is just older and not of the very best quality. Sometimes not much is available for videos of some of the older music.
My dad has just died today aged 92 and this was his favourite song, he would play it on a loop xxx
So sorry for your loss.
Blessings to you. 🙏❤️
my dads favourite aswell.......19 years past........it is still one of my favourites ❤
Sorry about your Dad. He had great taste.
❤
To think I watched Billy J Kramer Dakotas playing this live in the seventies. I feel so privileged.
My favourite version.
I agree with you!
It takes me back to a beautiful time in my life and the life of Britain

It was a big surprise to listen a very beautiful song I haven’t hear for so many years!
I HEARD THIS TUNE A LONG TIME AGO, I WAS SO YOUNG AND HAPPY....I MISS I T.
Dionne Warwick is my favorite singer of all time. But this is the first version I heard of this song in 1965 and holds special memories for me.
The original version of this song was on Burts Hitmaker album featuring The Breakaways on vocals. It was recorded in London and Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones played on it.
Great memories of this band in 60s...Liverpool rocked the World then...
love this and the box tops as well
First time I hear this song was in1965 in Melbourne Australia, I was 14 .

This is a great song, very nicely performed.
Beautiful music wonderful band ,real music not canned!

Very nice from back in the day ...never forgotten 😊🎶🎶
Amazing song
Love this song ,Train and boats and plains ,Billy J Cramer
where did the days go when the entertainers just decided to be slops.? This was a class act.
Civil rights, too much sexual freedom/ feminism, the Vietnam war & liberal politics gave too much freedom to youth born in the 70’s which brought classlessness and no respect…just drugs and wasted lives for many kids from broken homes. Now crime and murder rule.
Wow! He was a cutie pie! Oh, and the song was great, too.
Great song, I decided to change my channel to Mr. Ts Trains and Drones and Planes in memory of this song
Even the females back then had so much class..I wish I could go back..

My heart melting❤❤❤❤
Happy 80th birthday, Billy J.

When you get thrown away , it does feel like you are standing still watching them jet off
Sò beautiful, but its to short!! It hurts me to hear all these nice songs, from manny manny years ago!! Waar blijft de tijd??
such a beautiful song, would be great for a scene in a movie...
Tiger Tilt I think I've heard it on heartbeat if that counts
They made a movie about this song starring Steve Martin and John candy
@@grenvillegage9203 One of my faves. Those aren't pillows!!!
Maybe in Quentin Tarantino's last movie ;)
Wish he had made more music.
He had a great start not only , by having Lennon and McCartney write hit hit songs for him,but also John helped him with his stage name, and he had Brain Epstein as his manager.
He's got a new album out, as of now.
Lovely song 1965
Great tune.
He came from a big family, 7 siblings. Boy I bet they bragged about their famous sibling back in the day. Most young people do.
Akelig goed ( zoals zo veel muziek uit de jaren 60 )
Great track.

Brilliant!
Soberbio tema, preciosa y sentida
This was a breakout hit for BJ & The Dakotas! Billy Joe! That's what "BJ" meant? Or, heh heh heh, DID "BJ" MEAN SOMETHING ELSE??? HUH???
Nice! Check out the French version by singer Claude Francois "quand un bateau passe" super nice as well...
Think that is pirate and legend Mick Green on guitar
I could swear that the guitarist on the right is the guy that's sang with the Honeycombs. He looks just like him...
The guitarists name was Mick Green, the honeycombs singers name was Denis Deill-as far as I know both have passed away
De mooiste uitvoering
i want to hear this song played at 1.25 & sung with a Jamaican accent 😎🌴
Excellente retrouvaille. Merci
in english please
Love it...bjk..
This song was produced by Sir George Martin.
My Fave songs, ever. His version i loved more than Dionnen Warwick.
one of thest from the 60
Mick green of pirates fame on lead guitar
Never knew ! Fantastic comment,thanks
@@petemayes1940 forgot I put it on lol , welcome, mick then left billy j to be englebert Humperdincks guitarist for a few years 👍
Nice version of this song also there are good versions by Joanie Simmers and The Everly Brothers.
and maybe the best Dionne Warwick, as with all David and Bacharach tunes
And don't forget the BOX TOPS, very underrated group in the sixties, find there albums and listen.

This song is up there with, Bad to Me.
Great song but needs to be longer.

Chevere!
Super leuk
Ohh I wish Gene has recorded it as Burt planned.
Super
I was a teenager then
Me to.I use to have a crush on you but you didn’t know
There seems to be a Dakota missing.
Voz muito bonita muito legal

Listen carefully and compare to the rubbish played today
what year was this recorded ?
1965.
Impossible to first hear this song by Dionne Warwick and then be able to fully appreciate it by any other artist, not that I do not like Billy J. Kramer (and The Dakotas).
@sjaak boele
Ist ganz normal bei einem so großartigen Song von Burt Bacharach! Liebe Grüße aus Berlin
It's beautiful - gets to me too

Yeah, he also had a liking for the booze!
It happens when we age as well. I bet his grandkids are proud of his past fame. They were before my time.
Naif - mobil balap
This song was popular when I bid my girlfriend goodbye when I left for service.
Was she there when you got back?
The bass player looks like tony curtis the drummer from the searchers
Chris Curtis was the drummer of the Searchers. His real name was Chris Crummey.
Mick Green was the guitarist of the Pirates fame before and after his stint with the dakotas.
I think his voice is double tracked
Better than Rufus Wainwright
why do people who upload on here speed up..or slow down the original song...???
