We have tent camped for years and starting to think about RVing and considered renting to see if we would like the new idea. Thank you for sharing the RV renting scams. You guys are our favorite TH-cam channel, it's real authentic and look forward to watching how much you help others! Keep up the good work! We hope to meet you someday. We are in the Orlando, Florida area.
We rented RVs for YEARS (we are in Canada, large RV rental companies aimed at the European market are common here). With one exception, every single time we rented from large, established companies with pristine vehicles. The biggest pro with renting is that when we were able to purchase our own RV, we knew exactly what floorplan we wanted, what brands we were not interested in, etc. Also once we purchased, we had almost no extra items to buy (having purchased them over the years of renting). Having said that, no way are we renting out (or even loaning to friends) our 2020 rig! We refer people to the local rental company that we developed a good relationship over the years. :)
Great tips as usual. Especially for first timers, "try before you buy". Last October we decided to upgrade from our camper that we had used for the past 25 years and bought a used 1year old pristine class C with only 7K miles on it. The couple that bought it new were first timers and quickly found that this was not what they needed and traded it in. They probably lost close to $15K on the deal and we saved about $20k (over buying new). So for newbies LOTS of homework and try before you buy will help insure that you buy your second RV first! I am currently renting an RV from a private owner not through RV share. Maybe my situation is an exception to the rule but we have had a wonderful experience. Repairs have been completed in a timely manner. Payments are made in cash with me getting a receipt every time. Great tips! But remember it doesn't apply to everyone.
The RV share prices in my area are really high and that could be to Covid and they will come down later, but right now Cruize America is way cheaper for me. I not its a corporation but what are your thoughts on them. We want to spend a week as some prep work to determine if this is the life style for us so renting as you said is a great way to test the waters. I would say see if they would sponsor a video of your guys but you guys are too honest and thats what I love about you.
The Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are still good options and you can save 40%. I rent on all the platforms. The networks are the same to RV owners as IUber/Lyft is to drivers. Owners can provide rental insurance, process payments, 24:7 roadside for way less. 35% (25 for owners and 10 for renters) is quite a finders fee.
Hi guys! Another week, another message!... thank you for providing this very valuable information to your subscribers. Even though we won’t EVER rent-out our “Lucy” (2016 Navion M), you have given many people very good advice. Be careful, as there are scammers out there just waiting to take advantage of those who want to try-out RVing prior to buying. Your renter did you a great favor in labeling all the switches (I’m STILL learning some of ours!), and John, you were very smart in videoing your walk through with him! Unfortunately, there are scammers out there at every turn, and you two have just made it a lot easier for those who are just beginning the rv life. Thanks again for your kind advice...it can be used for other things in our lives, too! Love ya guys!, Virginia (give Sage a hug from me!)
LOL Virginia...We would never rent out our Piper :) Always happy to share what we learn and help others when we can. Always love hearing from you Virginia
RV Odd Couple i’m sooooo happy for Sage (and you!) in her growth! She is literally growing into quite the young lady, but she seems just so sweet too! I’m also sure she’s doing very well with her therapy...all will be good you two!
I got scammed on private RV rental. When it came close to pick up after I had paid, the owner said there was a maintenance problem. We couldn't use it and money was refunded but I had the pay the insurance part. No rentals for me ever.
I love love love your channel! John and Mercedes. Without Mercedes, you wouldn't have the glue that builds this channel and keeps your family in balance. God has blessed you both, regardless of your recent struggles. I became a full-time RVer for 5 weeks, during Covid-19. God blessed me with a year of videos, I watched that gave me the knowledge to do it. Thank you Mercedes and John from the bottom of my ❤️
As always great tips! Good subject matter video as well. We are not camping as much anymore. We live 10 minutes from a popular State Park here in North Texas. Actually you’ve given me an idea that maybe we can rent ours out just locally. Thank you! You’ve given me something to think about! 👍😀
As an rv tech, one of the things i frequently hear when someone buys a motorhome is: it is old but it doesnt have many miles. So i just listen but always am reminded of the saying "what u dont use, u lose." In saying that, i feel that people who rent out their rv are actually benefitting ther "baby.. ie. A rv frig has an ant-rust inhibitor in the cooling unit, but the frig (called a refer in rv tech talk) needs to b on for the substance to coat the tubes in the cooling unit fior it to b effective. When i was doing walk thrus w people who just bought there rv's, i wud recommend the to run their refer for 24 hrs if they were string it for a long period of time
Great information, I have a question. I have some property and I want to rent it out but not for a fee but rent it out for free if the person clean the property up. I will allow the person some time to clean the property up and as long as they keep the property clean and pay the taxes every year which is about 125 a year and the road is pave is this a good idea? A well is on the property plus city water is possible there is a septic tank but it kinda OLD meaning haven't be used in 20 years. The reason why I want to do is because i live out of state and the person be doing me a favor property is South Carolina
Very good advice to be leery about a rental unit with zero reviews. Be extra cautious. We were looking at a Monaco Class A in the Flagstaff area that was priced very reasonably on RV Share. But as I studied the photos on the listing I noticed there were three different rigs shown, including one that had a tag axle. That was a definite sign that something wasn't right. I tried to contact the owner through the RV Share site and never got a response, so I pointed out the discrepancies directly to RV Share. The listing quickly disappeared. If the owner doesn't answer you questions in a timely manner, move along to a different rig. Also be aware of the "mandatory" insurance charge most of the rv rental sites charge. They can be enormous, so be prepared.
Wow thank you for posting this tips. I have always wanted to rent an rv, but chickened out thinking about being scammed. However, after watching this video, not only did I regain my desire to rent, but also came across rvshare. Thanks so much, guys. You are a life saver!
Great advice for us newbies! Try before you buy - and learn what you really want. Rented a Class C for a 2 week trip out west, found it was too small for longer trips, but hard to go exploring. Now we are planning a short trip in a Class A, but will be able to wander very far w/o another vehicle. Van would be way too small for wifey and dog! Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I wouldn't want to rent out my RV but if the insurance will fix the broken stuff it might be okay. You do have great information here. Thanks for sharing your experience. Pat
We just started listing ours to try the rental program out. I hate that our RV just sits there so much when someone could be enjoying it. We don’t have any reviews yet but hoping we get some positive reviews soon! 💕Great Video!
We tried hard to rent a travel trailer before we bought ours last year, but the owners provided almost no answers or information related to towing. I could find weight info, but was trying to get info on hitch heights so I could make sure I had correct shanks. I got answers like “regular” or “normal” draws. I also found the owners of the specific trailers I was trying to rent before a purchase decision to be completely unresponsive to availability questions. It was an equally disappointing experience on RV Share and Outdoorsy. I gave up and went ahead and decided between the two trailers I was considering. I suspect the trailer rental market has a few more wrinkles than a class c, for example.
Thank you for a great video to warn & protect fellow RVers from possible scams. Thank you for all that you guys do ! I always look forward to your content because I am always learning from it.
What about stationary rv rental as we have 3 located on a 60 acre property in the smokey mountains in NC with hiking, waterfalls, wildlife, etc that we are ready to setup
it's always been said that if it flies, floats, f*^%s or rolls you should rent it.. in some instances i have to question the veracity of that, but if you are looking to buy later on, renting can be a good way to check out something you might have your heart set on only to end up in a pit fall later on. or not going into one that is...
@@RVOddCouple Used Outdoorsy this summer, and another rental planned for this fall - same advice. Large # of rental options available. Just stick with communications and payment thru their website.
Man this man looks and sound just like Alton Brown from Food Network. The difference he is a food expert and you are RV expert lol. Great tips by the way
daddysmurf180 Hi Guys, So Sorry but I could never rent my Siesta SS class C even if it sat in the driveway for a few months. Just to look out the window and think I'll be on the road again in a week what a feeling knowing that you can take that trip any time you want!
I’m considering purchasing an RV for the purpose of renting it out. I’m a cash buyer so will have no expense other than the cost. Any pointers of the type to buy and other things to think about? I live in Pahrump NV an hour out of Las Vegas and minutes from Death Valley. I also have vacant land here. Is it worth setting up a camper on it as a B&B? Thx
Thanks for clip but may I ask you about step by step... Select pickup drop-off, people number then website come out total right, do we pay any else extra or.....that's final amount? They will calculate how many miles over limited right then add it up to total? Am I right?
I saw your thumbnail and was interested but then I noticed the nearly 75k subscribers. Are you kidding me? You guys will be 100k soon and that’s amazing. Ok so this is what I needed because my wife and I had already spoke about renting first and doing a long trip before we purchased. I was thinking about this summer but with the Covid 19 lots of things have changed. Ok guys stay safe out there. Cheers!!!
Another great informational video with real useful information. Your honesty is refreshing. The RV Share program is interesting to me for future possibilities when we purchase our first RV. What is the split between owner and RV share? Trying to figure out if renting out is really worth the worry. Thanks
I'd never rent my RV. They require lots of maintenance and I watch how hard people tow on the roads. If I rented, I'd probably look at Travel America. Definitely buy proper insurance.
Been watching your channel for a little over a year, thanks for all the information that you put out. My question is I'm looking at used campers and I've heard some people on TH-cam say if your campers over 10 years old, some parks will not let you come in. Wondering if you know any thing about this or what type of parks have this type of rules. Thanks and be safe.
It’s very rare when that happens. There are many great COE parks and state parks where age doesn’t matter. Plus, they are usually much cheaper than an independent park.
Very helpful video! Thank you! We’re looking into renting from RVShare, could you expound on what it means when the rv owner writes something like, “75 miles per night included with rental for free”? What does this mean? Does that mean, as renters we would only be able to drive the rv 75miles a day, and anything over that 75 we will be charged extra? And I’m assuming the same would be true for the a generator time? So if they write, “3 hours per night generator usage included with rental for free.” We can only run the generator for 3hours a night? Sorry for all the questions. ☺️ Just looking for some help.
Me and my wife are looking into getting an rv and after going to a few TV shows we decided on a 5thwheel. We have the truck but wish there were places to teach how to drive and maneuver one.
Hi guys, watching from Australia 🇦🇺... We are going to USA next year and looking at renting a Class A 2015 Newmar ... I’ve never driven one before and not on the right hand side ... does this matter ?? Is it a scary proposition ?? Should I forget about it ?? Any tips would be awesome 😃
Hi David :) Sounds like an amazing trip for you! I understand your concern because I think about the same thing as we plan a trip in another Country. Scary proposition? Yup, but theres no fun without a little risk :))) Hope we cross paths when you hit the States
We drove cars in NZ & the UK (no RV). What helped us drive on the "wrong side of the road" was that the person NOT driving had to always make sure the driver was in the correct lane, since we always felt like we were driving wrong. Having 2 sets of eyes really helped us drive according to local custom & not USA custom. Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit to America.
I've rented from RV Share in the past, and the only issue I had was even Qualifying to use there service. They wanted a picture of both sides of my license, a copy of my passport. I do not have a smart phone and do not even own a camera so that was a pain. Once I got past that the renter was great and got back to me ASAP with any questions I had. Without asking she gave me a discount because I was renting it for a week. She had no clue how much gas was in the tanks and said just send me the receipt if you need to fill them up, and she did. I found out the trailer was full of roaches (it was rented in FL) She then sent me more money back because of the issue.
As usual, GREAT work guys! Best Regards, Roger ps. after 10yrs on the road and 10yrs off, I'm about ready to jump back out there! Hopefully we'll bump elbows some day :-)
Thanks for the video John and Mercedes! We are planning to make our first trip in September. Renting a RV in Manassas, VA and traveling to the Ridgeline mountains for a long weekend. We're looking forward to a great time and sure that your tips will come in handy.
I rented a small Class C last August for my birthday. Had great reviews but the floor was sagging and smelled like urine. I'm a germaphobe like John and cleaned the whole RV top to bottom. AC barely worked and was very hot. I realized that I wasn't going to get the true feeling by renting. That's just me and didn't want any more bad rental experiences to turn me off to RVing. So, my husband and I just purchased a 2021 Rockwood Mini Lite 2204s with twin beds and theatre seating instead of dinette. A good size to start with to see how we like the RV life. If we don't, we will sell. If we do, will trade and upgrade with more room to take the grandkids. Love your videos and have things in my Amazon cart from your Amazon store. Have watch many of your videos for the 2nd time😊 Take care and stay safe!
Hey guys, this video was amazing. I have a question, since you mentioned that someone could make a maximum of $40K per year renting out an RV. Obviously, that is the very high side. I am wondering your thought on this. What if someone who looked suspiciously like me were to purchase a new Travel Trailer (Let's say a Forest River Vibe 26BH) for 25 Grand in cash (no financing). Then let's say that this person threw in about 5 grand worth of sort of necessary upgrades like surge protectors. Then let's say that this handsome mo-fo decided to post it as a rental on RVShare. Do you think that this dashing 51 year old could make that money back (after expenses that I am sure will crop up) in say... 2 years? In other words, is targeting 30K in 2 years a realistic goal for this level of travel trailer? Link to this exact RV below. The reason I ask is because if I were to buy 3 of them (perhaps 3 different models) then I could retire right now and buy the 4th just to tool around in myself. Mine would be the 31ML, of course. The reason I ask your professional opinion is that I have no chance of getting my wife involved in RVs unless there is a surefire way of making money. She is all about money. Mammon is her king. Jesus is my king. I just want to relax. I could live in a van by the river and be just fine. She wants money. If I can appease her appeal to continue having a better than average income, maybe I can take it easy and drive around and drinking beer. Not at the same time! heheh forestriverinc.com/rvs/travel-trailers/vibe/26BH/4468
I don't know if I would want to risk my investment with others driving my RV. I'm wondering... Does RVShare have the functionality to "review/rate" those customers who are renting rigs? Because the ONLY way I would ever consider this is if I were able to limit my offer to ONLY those who have a history of renting - and have GOOD rating as a renter. This is mostly because I just don't have a lot of faith in a lot of people today. Just as with rental cars, "many people" will treat those vehicles *much more harshly* than they would treat their own. You mentioned renting your RV at a lower rate if you are new and don't have a lot of reviews yet; that's what I was thinking also. Conversely, I think a new renter to the system with no history should probably be willing to rent at a _higher_ rate until they themselves _have received good reviews/ratings_ from rig owners.
Renting from Outdoorsy is worse than renting from a private individual.. These platforms gives the illusion of protection but are quick to drop off complaints to a 3rd party company,
Great advice. The devil 😈 is indeed in the details! We are contemplating renting or perhaps loaning our RV to a health care worker in our area. The platform you recommend looks like the way to go for sure. We bought our 5th wheel with no prior RV experience. John and Mercedes advice of renting what you are looking to buy (sadly too late for us), and giving it a try before you buy would likely have made a difference in what we bought. We thought about it and decided against it due to not having a tow vehicle at the time. We didn’t realize we could’ve asked them to take it to a site nearby. I also felt the cost was not worth it. It would have paid off. Just saying....
No views, but if you’re new to the RV rental they won’t have any reviews. So don’t be afraid of us new RV’ers renting out our RV for the first time. Like me.
Mercedes had mentioned to list your rig for free? Does that refer to a fee that RV share charges or the cost to the renter? Please clarify. Love you guys and your videos.
I enjoy your channel, taking notes. We are starting our channel with our first TH-cam video this Sunday, wish me luck! ...... 1MillionMileRoadTrip, any advise will appreciated!
FYI: RV share link not working. I had looked into renting an RV a few years ago from a different company. Those crazy people wanted FULL access to all renter's emails to read them!!
Everything you said is very true! We had a great experience ourselves... rented a Travato KL to see if we liked Class B's and the RV lifestyle (th-cam.com/video/rJ6-mwm3iHY/w-d-xo.html). The renter was very communicative, no scams, walked us through everything, and even lent us his drone to use if we wanted. Renting was a bit expensive for our tastes, but if you really want to get away, it is the best option. Be seeing you!
My daughter works for RV Share (CPA) and loves ❤️ it. Great company why? Because they care for their employees as much as they care for their customers.

I would or will never rent out my RV. I have lost trust in about 90% of people from being a landlord. I have more trust in animals than people.
We would never rent ours either Richard. To each his/Her own :)
I’m with you Richard! I’ll rent them my houses but they can’t drive them down the road lol they do enough damage with them sitting on a lot!
I’ll rent mine out and I’ll deliver it. Not all RV’s can be picked up and driven to the location. I have a 37’ fifth wheel, so we’ll deliver it.
@@RVOddCouple you would never rent yours out, but you make a video about renting it out? Have you ever rented your RV out?

When renting a travel trailer weighing 4,500lbs do you require that the tow vehicle has trailer brakes and the proper hitch?

Hi great couple! :) What do you think of Outdoorsy?
No experience with Outdoorsy Craig. We chose RV Share for our rental and it went great.
@@RVOddCouple Used Outdoorsy this summer, and another rental planned for this fall - same advice. Large # of rental options available. Just stick with communications and payment thru their website.
Great info
Would like to learn more….
We aren’t renting ours out :)
Cheers!!!
Hey Buddy! We seem to be slowing lately but are very grateful for our People. Cheers F & T
Another great informational video with real useful information. Your honesty is refreshing.
The RV Share program is interesting to me for future possibilities when we purchase our first RV. What is the split between owner and RV share? Trying to figure out if renting out is really worth the worry.
Thanks
Always welcome :) Thank you Richard
Great topic, you two. I don't intend to rent, but this was good info for those in the market. Best to you two!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you as always Tim :)
I'd never rent my RV. They require lots of maintenance and I watch how hard people tow on the roads. If I rented, I'd probably look at Travel America. Definitely buy proper insurance.
I feel the same way David! Mercedes, not so much lol
@@RVOddCouple That's interesting. I'm somewhat teasing Mercedes, but after renting your RV one time, I believe she would change her mind. 😊
Great question. We don't personally have experience with this. We've heard that it but we've never seen anyone get denied.
☺️ Just looking for some help.
how many nights a year on average do you rent your RV for? and do you see more demand for Class B's?
Hi guys u gave some good advice.thank you
Our pleasure Ganesh :)
Me and my wife are looking into getting an rv and after going to a few TV shows we decided on a 5thwheel. We have the truck but wish there were places to teach how to drive and maneuver one.
Go slow and let us know how it goes. We are working on a video for driving a Fifth wheel.
Im considering purchasing a trailer to rent out...Im in Washington state I think its a good business...but researching
Excellent advise. I just subcribed today 😀
Welcome aboard! Thank you Tina :)
Hopefully we'll bump elbows some day :-)
Go for it Roger! We'd love to see you out here
Thanks for the video John and Mercedes! We are planning to make our first trip in September. Renting a RV in Manassas, VA and traveling to the Ridgeline mountains for a long weekend. We're looking forward to a great time and sure that your tips will come in handy.
Our pleasure Gerald :) Please let us know how it goes....
We tried rv share but no one would rent to new rvers. So we had to use cruise America
Hmmm?
I just made a rental reservation last week. I wish I saw this video first.
Let us know how it goes :)
Thank you Stephanie! Yikes... sorry to hear about that smell! John would have a big problem with that. Sounds like you came to a good compromise. :-)
Not at the same time! heheh

In the thumbnail, John looks like he's fighting the Rv park. LOL
LOL Pops!~~!~ Good to see you :)
Hi Jon and Rolls Royce. Good info. Too bad the Mice wont pay rent aye.
LOL
We would never rent ours unless we bought an extra for specifically that reason. Renters do receive reviews👍😊
Can I rent your RV, don't forget I get senior citizens discount and disabled Vietnam vet discount. Lol. Love you guys.....Larry
Hey Larry! We would love to have you over one day
I'm looking to rent a class A.
Make sure it has lots of good reviews
I love your videos they are so informative. I love your wife also. hehehe. In your opinion do you like the RAM van over a Ford or Sprinter van?
Any tips on buying an rv?
Renting from Outdoorsy is worse than renting from a private individual.. These platforms gives the illusion of protection but are quick to drop off complaints to a 3rd party company,
How do you guys not have more subs!?
Great Chanel 👍🏽
Ty 😊👍
Great points as always Susan! Guess who's playing with Bed Bugs
I had considered buying a new RV and putting our current RV seasonal somewhere and renting it out, but I’m so risk averse I couldn’t do it. 😳
I’m a germaphobe and risk averse lol...
Ok.. I thought this was going to be lame. Oh but far from it. You talked about things I need to know. Again for me you rocked it. 👍😎
Glad it was helpful Stache :) !
For me... I would not rent my TT. I like my own germs. And I am fussy and keep things like new. Renting would not work for me.
I couldn’t either 😊
No views, but if you’re new to the RV rental they won’t have any reviews. So don’t be afraid of us new RV’ers renting out our RV for the first time. Like me.
Good info. 👍
Glad you think so!
It’s expensive and time consuming to repair accident damage on any RV
Yup!
This is great information but was it sponsored? It sure sounded like it. I don’t care, but wondered.
Nope! not sponsored. We try things and share our honest oppinions
It definitely made me think this is the way to start to see what I like.
Mercedes had mentioned to list your rig for free? Does that refer to a fee that RV share charges or the cost to the renter? Please clarify.
Love you guys and your videos.
It costs us nothing to list on RVShare, but they take 25% of the fees... details are on their site. rvshare.com/rvs/details/1081263
Thank you 👍😊
Looks like you got your answer 😊 Love the RV Odd Squad
Be afraid be very afraid of the RV couple death stare (ha ha) great info guys!!! Respect, Peace and Love
LOL Herman....Thank you for the giggle :)
I enjoy your channel, taking notes. We are starting our channel with our first TH-cam video this Sunday, wish me luck! ...... 1MillionMileRoadTrip, any advise will appreciated!
Awesome! Good luck. Consider taking our class. It will save you a year of learning and lumps and bumps :) Too much work to do for free
I already purchased a course, next week I have a video about it, I mentioned the channels I follow, including your channel.
RV Odd Couple how much is your course, learning is a continuation thing...
FYI:
RV share link not working.
I had looked into renting an RV a few years ago from a different company. Those crazy people wanted FULL access to all renter's emails to read them!!
Thanks for that!
Thank you
My daughter works for RV Share (CPA) and loves ❤️ it. Great company why? Because they care for their employees as much as they care for their customers.
Thanks for sharing!
THUMBS DOWN: time for some mics for better audio.
I would charge so much to rent mine that I don't have to worry about it.
Great idea Terry!
Can I speak to someone please
Wow u ditch on me
Lol
I need a lawyer to rent a RV. LOL
RVShare Corp.. what a huge pain in the ass...I'd rather walk than do business with them
Thank you my friends; My brother got ripped off, the trailer smelled like cat pee🤮.
Cher Johnson Use vinegar to clean it. 🐱🌸🐈
Love you Cher 💚
