I'm 57 yrs old Been a staunch metalhead for 47 of them, and I swear to god I would have nothing.... nothing bad said about Kate Bush. She is completely and utterly truly inimitable. She's a national treasure, and she is quite simply perfection.
My 14 year old son and I watched ST together and his reaction to this Kate Bush song made my heart burst and he has now started listening to her stuff!
It has been one of the greatest joys of my life for my daughter to suddenly discover Kate Bush and for me to introduce her to the music! There’s definitely a ‘thing’ happening with the youngsters and her music right now…. I also LOVE stranger things - as I was the same age as the kids in the show in the 80s so its a proper nostalgia fest 😀
Agreed. Class comment mate. My kids liked trash for so long. They are starting to turn the corner. Took the eldest to see the chili's end of June and he frickin loved it 🤣
Kate Bush almost didn't get the recognition she deserved back in the day. David Gilmour heard her demos and thought they were great and more or less told EMI they needed to sign her by using the influence he'd garnered for himself. Thank you, David Gilmour!
I met David Gilmore when I was like 8, went to his house and my family took four of his cockerels off him, he loved his chickens but his cocks were bothering him so yeah then we had 4 of his cockerels in our garden
It's really important how the song was used in the show and that has a lot to do with why it resonated so much. The particular sequence it was used in was a very tense emotional one and the song was used as a huge payoff and really well edited into the scene, in fact the entire scene itself was masterfully edited. I've always loved her music, but even I was getting emotional watching it.
I concur. I've always loved this song and that scene with Max for me teary-eyed because it was used brilliantly to heighten the story. That's part of the reason the song is connecting so much with new fans.
It's also ALL about the importance of communicating with and understanding your loved ones, which is something Max particularly (but others too) is really struggling with and has kind of got her in this mess in the first place. So it's a lovely irony that a song about communicating is her favourite song and actually saves her.
@Sorscha 1 It's also about her wish for wanting to trade places with Billy. After the flashbacks she chose to fight and live again and run to her friends. So powerful
The older I get (I'm 50 with 14 year old twin daughters) the less I care where anyone says they've heard or discovered something. I'm with you Justin. There's few more life affirming moments than when your child discovers a classic song/album/artist and you hear and see the pure joy of discovery. I'm a music teacher, so I have many moments like this in my job, which makes me a very lucky guy. Love your channel Justin. Your videos are always a must watch - amusing, intelligent, wry and entertaining. xxx
I have that same happiness as my boys, who love music, become obsessed with albums and bands I have CD's of. They're getting into music from the 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's that they keep suddenly latching onto. My oldest boy is almost 12 and plays the trumpet and sings and he loves so much music that keeps surprising me. I love these moments.
You don't care about where and when people have discovered something and some day, one of your students will tell an amazing story of how they were introduced to a song or whatever at school by their teacher and someone else will brush it off with a boring story about how many kids they've got.
Love Kate Bush. You could debate that her debut album The Kick Inside in 1978 is the greatest ever debut by a musical artist. Rolling Stone gave the album 3 stars out of 5, once again proving they've had their heads up their arses all these years.
Rolling Stone has been so consistently wrong with their takes on current music since their inception it’s a wonder their name commands any respect at all. Their list of 100 greatest guitar players is a joke lmao.
Yes its a great album, I bought "East side story" by Squeeze, "Foreigner 4" and "The kick inside" all within one month and they are the best albums I have ever heard in all of my 58yrs!, there are some that come close but those three are the best, yes we all have different ideas about music and we can't all like the same thing, how boring would that be! lol.
There was a video where Big Boi said "Running up the Hill" was his favorite verse a couple years ago. Then Meg Myers did a pretty decently popular cover a couple year ago as well. Now this. Definitely a lot of love for Kate Bush the past few years
This song is one of my all time top ten favorites. Kate has fone some incredible music and I do remember as a teen ager I tried to do my homework while playing her debut album, the Kick Inside and it was very hypnotic and pulled in to somewere else. Some years ago I got in touch with her and blamed her for my low grades for that and she actually replied very kindly. BYW, you got a great channel there and I may not comment that often, I do follow it. Cheers from Sweden!
It's brilliant that she replied to you Ollie! What did she say? People just don't seem to write letters any more (email being easier and quicker - and a lot cheaper than stamps, I suppose) but I'd have been so blown away to have got a letter from someone like Kate. Did you keep her letter?
I was fortunate enough to see Kate's first date of her one and only tour, at the Liverpool Empire back in 1979....there were a few technical issues (she was using a radio mic headset, which was science fiction in those days) but it was AMAZING!!!!!...I think it's brilliant that she's reaching more and more people.
A high school classmate introduced me to Kate Bush. Hounds of Love just came out and he loaned me the album. I was obsessed. So, It’s a trip to watch Stranger Things depict a teen of the 80’s discover and obsess over Kate Bush. Hounds of Love was a revelation to me and I’m delighted that kids today are discovering it.
This song makes me cry. "Do you want to know that it didn't hurt me"? Wow.. Everyone who knows anything about music be they into rock, punk, thrash...loves Kate Bush. Her Along with Alan Holdsworth are two incredible geniuses, England should be proud of.
When I discovered my dad’s Led Zeppelin LPs in the mid 90s I can remember how happy it made him to see me excited about the music of his generation. Such a gift. Gatekeepers be damned.
That's when I got into them, found some cheap tapes and an older bloke at work who thought they were fantastic convinced me to try even more and get some better copies with my hard-earned £££s.
Im 42 years old and this was a memory unlock for me hearing Running up the hill on Stranger Things.. Of course i knew of Kate Bush but it instantly unlocked a nostalgic trip down memory lane of me being very young playing with toys in my living room with my mum playing stuff like Babooshka, running up the hill and cloudbursting etc... The world is a very different place with so much to consume that you forget all that great stuff from the past. I have been revisiting the Kate Bush back catalogue myself and my youngest daughter keeps asking me for the hill song, lol basically she saw the music video of wuthering heights when Kate is in the woods outside and she calls it the hill song. She is 3 years old and loving Kate haha
I heard a song on a Netflix show a while back. It blew me away. I had to look it up, never heard it before. It’s “Into the Fire” by Harry Nilsson sometime in the 1970s. The bass player detunes while they’re recording, it’s amazing. I’m 60 and I was so excited to discover this song.
You are spot on. There has actually been research in this comparing music from the 50’s to 2000’s. There is an accelerating decline in complexity, timbre, dynamic range and lyrical complexity, and an increase in “loudness” and compression. And it is worse now for the reason you deduce- getting clicks on streams.
A possible hypothesis for why classic (often under-appreciated) songs blow up when featured in pop culture: these songs and artists have had a profound influence on the music that followed theirs, lending an air of familiarity to the "new old songs" when people hear them for the first time and helping them to really resonate.
Hey Justin, so Kate’s sing is about her best friend RUTH (Running Up That Hill acronym) who was dying of cancer and her exploration of why was she able to have this amazing life while her friend got the shaft, and if she could switch places, she would. Also, check the Placebo cover of this song, it’s killer.
Love this tribute Justin. Thank you. Isn’t it brilliant when music that you love and respect crosses over? I hope a whole new world of folks discover the oddness of “The Dreaming” and sit, with headphones, listening to “The Ninth Wave”. Could not be happier for Kate. It’s interesting that you mention recordings from the 90s and yet, it was those tracks from “The Sensual World” (ok that was 1989) and “The Red Shoes” that she re-visited on “Directors Cut”. The remasters are a joy. Curated to her impeccable ear. I love Kate Bush. X
I’ve learned about Kate Bush through Placebo and The Futureheads covering Running Up That Hill and Hounds Of Love respectively (was a teen in the 2000s). What an artist. There has been nothing like her since.
Ha, same-ish. Phones Wolves at the Door mix of Futureheads -> Futureheads -> Kate Bush. She can be challenging to listen to and doesn't always jive with my tastes but I think that's part of what makes her interesting. What an insanely prolific artist.
Same here and I’ve been a fan of hers ever since. (I’m also from the same city as the Futureheads and see them in my local supermarket all the time! 🤣🙈)
Kate is an artist that made albums. They each have a sound, feel and theme. I would recommend listening to them as albums, and not bouncing around on streaming services.
Love Kate's work & I loved this song when it was released in 1985. There is another song on that same album called , Cloud Busting. Cloud Busting I hold every bit as good as Wuthering Heights which for me was almost a religious experience. The fact that Kate is now recognise for her only serves to love her music more. FYI Kate's brilliance was discovered by another brilliant musician, Dave Gilmore. Now Dave is an eclectic soul, & it does not surprise in the least that. he behaved as her mentor. Thank you Justin...
The Hounds of Love is incredible. My personal favourite is Cloudbursting though, one of the greatest songs ever written and the recording and production do it great justice. The Fairlight synths used on this record have aged so well in comparison to other tech from the era.
....."The Big Sky" with its descending progression, IMMEDIATELY reminds me of the early 70's and Chi Coltrane, her "Thunder And Lightning" - would HAVE to imagine Justin's familiar with it but, just in CASE.....th-cam.com/video/B9uJwegqviA/w-d-xo.html
I was 14 when this song came out. While I liked it, I can’t say I fully appreciated the song as I do now. My daughter is 14 and a big Stranger Things fan. When I heard this in that episode, it really hit me differently. I have listened to it again multiple times. What a fantastic song.
Okay, first, you had some of the most epic songs and videos in recent memory - mind blown that you have a TH-cam channel! Second, love that you're calling yourself a dad rock enthusiast - please! Culture used to have a looooong shelf life, now it's nano seconds. Keep raving, you're amazing! x
As a pastime I write music and the song Mother Stands for Comfort always amazes me. It’s such a strange and beautiful composition, timing wise, melodically etc featuring a fret less bass. Hounds of Love is up there with Sgt Pepper as one of the all time greatest albums.
I think it's fabulous that there is a whole new audience for Kate. Can't bear music snobbery. Music makes the world go round. I treasure my KB vinyl's. Stranger Things is fabulous! Just gotta say Nightwish! One of the best bands ever!!
Music snobs and elitists can go shove their head where the sun doesn't shine....so no need for them to change. They conveniently forget how they themselves found music from before their birth. I always say, it's not how you find great music, only that you did find it.
Absolutely. I have teenage kids and I have told them they are the luckiest souls because they have youtube and all the music ever made at their fingertips. My teenage days were spent praying that my favourite song would come on the radio (so I could sneakily record it on my tape player) I would have LOVED youtube and spotify and to be able to explore different artists and music like they can.
@@kiwisoup1301 Top 40 on a Sunday evening. C-90 cassette tape at the ready, hoping the DJ didn't talk over the song too much. Those were the days, hahahaha. Let's not forget that you had to actually leave the house to buy your music. 🙂
KB is a genius, I’ve loved her since I was a kid and I think it’s fantastic that people are newly discovering her wonderful music. I’ve played Kate’s music around the house for years yet it’s taken Stranger Things to make my kids think she’s cool which is ok I guess!
Hey Justin, great video. On the subject of the small percentage of music today that doesn't suck: I would love to hear what you think of The Lumineers, particularly a song like "It Wasn't Easy to be Happy For You". I initially wrote them off but I think they're probably a part of a revival of great songwriting (this song is pretty raw, no noticeable pitch correction, etc. but, dare I say (?), it's brilliant).
I hope Cloudbusting makes an appearance in the nxt chapter. Some of the lyrics are quite apt for Elevens story with the hiding from the government / Daddy/ a threat to the men in power/here in my head references.
Hounds of love is one of my favourite albums and I was welling up when running up that hill was used in stranger things. Especially as they added string instruments to it. It perfectly suited the scenes and the emotions being portrayed. Kates body of work is amazing ! It's great that a new generation are being introduced to her music via stranger things it makes me so happy 😊
I don’t know why I’m so late to your page but I’m here for it 👏🏼 I agree about mainstream music being average (or below) I’m very lucky to have an old school punk rock/ drum playing Dad who blasted a vast array of amazing albums through my childhood- which I now blast to my 2 year old 😆 We also love Kate Bush, and rightly so! Music is handed down, inherited and soaked up. Really enjoying your channel 👏🏼
Loved watching this and hearing your comments. I've loved Kate since Sat In Your Lap came out. I subsequently bought her back catalogue and have bought everything she's made since. The Before The Dawn live show at Hammersmith Apollo was the best live show I've ever seen. Phenomenally surreal!
I’m one of those older folk and KB was/is the soundtrack to my awakening. Pure genius and I’m so delighted she’s back… never went away really! Not for me anyway…
I bought Hounds of Love in 1985 whilst in the Royal Navy and roughy-toughy sailors laughed at me because they were into Milli Vanilli! Still, to this day, when asked what is your all time favourite album, I reply, Kate Bush's Hounds of Love. A true pop-rock masterpiece. Truly :-0) Cloudbusting makes my eyes water, like rain, in a good way. The video with Donald Sutherland is my fav pop video of all time too.
I got into blues, soul and funk via Queen. All I listened to was Queen when I was a kid. But I remember the old Greatest Hits VHS with the mini-band member profiles and started listening to their "favourite artist". If not for John Deacon I'd have not gone down the Stevie Wonder rabbit hole although I loved his chart hits. If people discover Kate Bush via Stranger Things they may find other rabbit holes of artists that influenced her. Always a good thing.
I had a conversation earlier with a 20 something who said she loved the song having heard it on Stranger things.Kate Bush is an icon and this shows that her music is acceptable to all ages by the way I’m 59
I had a massive crush on Kate Bush in my late teen years in 1978 I was 17 and Kate was 19 years old which is when I first seen and heard her music from her first album The Kick Inside and as I got older the more I respected her talent! My friends thought she was cute but weird and didn't get why I listened to her music! I thought her music was awesome and the more I listened to her the more I was understanding what the songs were about. Watching her dance was amazing! This is coming from someone who is a die hard Rocker who is now 60 years old and a metal head!!
Great to hear she’s getting some well deserved recognition. Goes to show how ahead of her time she was back in the day when people are just starting to catch up with her now. Legend.
@@thomas79marshall In certain countries yes but she certainly didn’t get the recognition she deserved around the world. She had a big cult following which is great. She’s only really gaining big popularity in countries l like America for example more recently. She isn’t as well known around the world as the likes of other artists of that time like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Madonna, Grace Jones etc.
Figured this would happen, and honestly I'm glad it has. The vast majority of contemporary music is absolute tosh, and this track is, ironically enough, a breath of fresh air.
Actually there's a lot of amazing music today but ppl don't listen to that Ironically most of my fav artists rn are from UK lol I mean england always seemed to have a taste for real art There's a reason why tori amos got popular from uk and not the US
The Justin Hawkins that needs sleep is hilarious. My favourite episode so far. Sat here laughing at the way you describe modern (crap) music. Less sleep, more honest reviews 😆
Hounds of Love has been my #1 album since my teens (when it came out). Side A is full of fantastic singles - but Side B - "The Ninth Wave" is an incredible concept work.
I really appreciate your ongoing commitment to the zoom-in on your intro/outro song. It’s the little things, innit! I love that Kate Bush is seeing a resurgence, but it kinda saddens me that it takes a TV show for her to get the huge mainstream attention that she’s always deserved. I’m more of a The Dreaming guy myself. Night of the Swallow is, in my view, one of the greatest songs ever written. Absolute legend.
Hounds of love is a remarkable album, and The Ninth Wave (the whole of side 2) is simply extraordinary. If Stranger Things gets people younger than me to listen then it can only, only be a good thing. My daughter was surprised when I told her she actually had the album!
I’m proud to say that I’ve shown my children when they were growing up 80’s music, they always showed off to their friends at school 😅 today they are 26 and 20 years old. It’s such a delight to watch that series and reviving the 80’s soundtrack. Kate Bush was so much ahead of her time, just awsome.
I've been a Kate Bush fan since day one when Wuthering Heights was in the charts. It changed my life as I read Wuthering Heights and got into literature in a way a working-class Northern kid never would. This led to an interest in the arts in general and this became my life's work. I can trace it all back to Wuthering Heights the song, then reading the novel, it was even more inspiring that the Bronte's lived near my home and I would often walk to Bronte Waterfall and think about the fact they walked the streets of the wee town. She inspired me to tap into an entire creative world. I'm delighted that a new generation is discovering her work. Especially if she finally breaks America where she was little known. I hope this brings her back to the stage one more time. I hope it is more than a bloody meme as actually, I might find that a little insulting.
Kate Bush....anytime anyone tells me they like her music I immediately know we will be friends!! I've loved her forever. The Kick Inside is a genuine masterpiece and I'm happy that the younger generation is being introduced to her genius and magic. And she IS magic. I've never watched Stranger Things. But I'll always and forever listen to Kate.
One of my favourite things as a parent and a teacher is introducing the kids to songs they made not have heard yet. How great must it be to hear a song like Running up that hill for the first time for them. I remember off the back of Katie's amazing machines, playing I believe in a thing called love for the first time to my kids. Also in my class (I teach 5-6 year olds) playing Sir Duke for the first time. Now they know who Stevie Wonder is.
Cloudbusting is my favorite Kate Bush song. Excellent music video too which, fun fact, Donald Sutherland appeared in for free after receiving a letter from Bush asking if he would. He happened to be filming a movie at same time nearby and came and did the video in his free time. Amazing. Anyway, on another note. Justin, I can’t tell you how delighted I was to find your channel, I love your videos. Permission to Land came out when I was 11 and was my first introduction to rock that was my own separate to my parents influences (Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, etc, who I love but still) and fueled my obsession with electric guitar having only played classical up until that point. It didn’t leave my CD Walkman for months and I soon had every song memorized. Thanks for all that you do, The Darkness will always be in my top 10 of all time.
As a Musician and a hugely obsessed Music nerd myself, Kate Bush has always felt to me like a well kept secret. A Music fans Musician, A Songwriters Songwriter etc. It's kind of an odd feeling to see her experience a new wave of popularity. She deserves all the credit though.
Kate was given the opportunity to support Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ tour in the USA (77,78?) by her label EMI, which would’ve made her massive! Instead she concentrated on her second album ‘Lionheart’, which is a shame because the strength of the tracks on ‘A Kick Inside’, which still sound amazing today, could’ve kept her going for a bit before the second album. Anyway, brilliant that she’s cracking the market now. Bit like Queen with ‘Wayne’s World’. Another great nugget of an episode Justin, love it.
That's what I mean by watch out for alternative histories. Bohemian Rhapsody was an iconic rock song long before Wayne's World. Every kid would sing along to it in opera voice, when Mike Myers was a kid, even if you had to make up most of the words, you'd remember Galileo and Figaro yo yo yo etc. Only the "minor 6s" of the class (goths and new wave adjacent mostly) even knew who Kate Bush was back then.
What I should’ve said is that ‘Running up That Hill’ in Stranger Things has introduced Kate Bush to a new audience, which you can’t deny happened with Queen in Wayne’s World. It took them, what, seven albums before they scored a U.S. number one? My actual point was that success in America was handed to Kate on a plate with the Rumours tour, however, she turned it down to develop ‘Lionheart’ and a tour of her making with dance etc (Tour of Life). But hey, being the internet, unless you word your sentence 100% correct, some arse is going to pedant the rant.
Kate is really the goddess of music, an unsurpassed and subtle talent whose artistic skill continues to grow. In Running Up That Hill she is at the height of her young powers. New fans should explore her work, there is much to be found and it takes repeated listening to reveal all the layers. Kate's songs are going to burrow into your bones and become a part of your life. It does not hurt that she is also a talented lyricist. Her music is filled with mystery, darkness, sparkling lights, despair, love and anger, and hope. Enjoy, younglings! P.S. No effing autotune either. It's all her.
I hear a fair amount of Kate Bush inspired music on the charts these days, particularly her atmospheric touches, and her odd, repetitive chord changes. Billie Eilish springs instantly to mind.
Kate Bush being thrown back to the top of the charts might be the turning point in bringing back good music The record companies might see the value Im not holding my breath though
As someone who is 58 and a lifelong music fiend I can say with absolute sincerity the top 40 has always basically sucked since I was a little kid. Mostly, derivative dreck. But... Every now and again an original sound or voice pops through the noise. This is absolutely a good thing. Shakes the world up for you. Changes your perspective. What you consider to be great varies by person and that is what makes life interesting.
Movies and more recently (last 10 years especially) TV have been great vehicles for reintroducing music. The Pulp Fiction soundtrack (I was 11 when it was released) blew my mind! My folks had a deep record collection but that showed me how much else was out there in a great way. By the way, I couldn't even watch the movie when it first came out, but my cousin gave me the cd soundtrack.
I never fail to surprise my kids when they ask me to listen to a "new" song. Only to know it word for word..... Then having the chance to give them a lil history lesson on the song, artist or an encounter with them. I'm with you Justin, I Iove any generation finding an appreciation for "olden day" music. Lol.
Let's not forget that Placebo did a bang up job covering "Running Up That Hill" many moons ago as well. Kate Bush is one of a kind, and deserves all the recognition even it's a tad later in her life.
I love that cover. One of my favourites, and I don't take too kindly to Kate covers. Athough, tbh, it's impossible to do a bad cover of her songs because they're just so good.
good luck at download, Justin! and good for Kate. i'm happy for her. i live in the States, and i've known about her for a very long time, but she just never caught on. i'm glad she's finally getting recognition here.
I realize the series wasn't a big, but this song was featured in a huge scene in the show GLOW (also on Netflix), too. It's how I discovered the tracks. The show wasn't UNpopular, though, but I guess it didn't saturate a big enough market to see any significant boost.
Amazing that you are covering this... we were watching that episode last night and I asked my wife (who to her credit was already very familiar with this artist and song) who does this song? It's so good!
It doesn't matter how you find great work from the past, only that you found it. I've always read that Kate has been very careful about how and where her music is used, so it's great that it's worked out so well.
Most new (to me) music I have found over the last 6 months has been from this channel. Even music and artists I have heard before is all new when revisited with your perspective.
I agree with you, It is silly to think there is some sort of ownership over it because we were there the first time around. I was around for this but was not around for the amazing music that came out of the 60s or 70s. Great music is great music and everyone should be able to enjoy it.
I had a great eperience a couple of years ago when I heard a song at the end of the final ep of "Mind Hunter" Series 1...it was Peter Gabriel's "Intruder". I knew a lot of his material from the height of his fame in the mid 80s-90s but hadn't heard much from his earlier solo work. That lead me down the wonderful rabbit hole into the early Genesis records, which I always knew I "should" check out one day. Thank you to whoever made that creative decision to use THAT song at THAT point in the show - it was a very powerful way to leave the series hanging and I am grateful for the subsequent travels it's lead me on. Nice one, Art!
Some of us knew she was a genius from 1978. Such an amazing back catalogue. Without being 'that guy', modern music is so lame that a properly written song being introduced is an alien concept. Totally agree with your comments about modern stuff being shit, this generation is being screwed music wise
I don't understand how this doesn't happen more often, but organically, not because of a tv show or movie. A good song is a good song. Many are beyond good, into legendary, and many are timeless. Why don't THEY become hits again for a whole new generation of listeners?
Simple. Todays generations are JELLY brained, over sensitive, over anxious , soulless drones who can’t last 5 minutes without their device. You expect them to connect to a good song without the aid of a separate artistic machine to highlight the music? They need images, they need high fevered opinions hyping up the images, they need HD , they need seperate storylines… …they just need HELP 😆
Wuthering heights was the first song I ever remember being obsessed by. I would have been 5 when it came out and absolutely insisted I had my own copy of the single, even though my mum was buying one at the time. Love LOve LOVE Kate Bush.
Good day to you sir. Your perceptive pontification on the definition of the word "average" at 09:00 was both astute and concise. "Not quite shit enough to be shit... not quite good enough to be great". If it is not already, this should be on a T-shirt. Cheers.
Stranger things takes older songs and makes them popular again, breathes new life into them, and they all deserve it; Joy division, The Clash, Kate Bush and many more And I think thats why music in movies and shows are important, they can really help artists
No, not really. The other songs did not take off the way Kat Bush did. The other songs did not chart. The Kate Bush song is much much much bigger than what happened to the other songs. At least know before you run your mouth.
True Cam. The clash could be left back in the 80s but true. Im sure everyone of these songs have been heavily downloaded since the show regardless of which one had been the most..
@@canaryinacoalmine7267 the clash absolutely did reach the charts, same as joy division, maybe not to the extent of Kate bush but they definitely had their moments, no need to be such a douche
I hope this means she actually shows her face somewhere for a change, maybe, if possible, does an interview in person, just to remind everyone she's a "living" legend.
Funny you mention needing to be ready for Download as I'm watching this after seeing you guys there, great set and I was chuffed you played LIOAF, one of my personal favourite tracks ❤️ Im so happy to see people talking about Kate Bush again. She's brilliant and I hope people finding her through Stranger Things go and discover more of her work as she has so many truly brilliant tracks!!
My 16 year old daughter's already a Kate Bush fan (her stellar musical taste is a mystery to me😉), so she almost came off the couch when she heard her voice emanating from the TV during one of her favorite shows. 😂🤣🤗
I think it's worth mentioning just how well the track was used within the scene as well. It was just a fantastic sequence that the power of the song truly made the sequence truly brilliant.
Under Ice gives me chills every time. Oh, and the Placebo version of Running Up That Hill is for me, definitive. The mood is just killer. Your cover of This Town...by Sparks is FANTASTIC.
I'm a huge long-term KB fan, and as far as I'm concerned the more people discover her the better. The Hammersmith gig I saw remains the best live experience I've witnessed to this day....and The Dreaming remains one of the best albums ever recorded by anyone ☺️
Agree wholeheartedly. The Dreaming is also my favorite of her albums and I was in London as well. September 30th 2014. Unique experience! What I also remember is the vibe at that concert. Everybody there seemed to be a diehard-fan. Noone dared to raise a smartphone, when she arrived on stage the whole room was just happy and seemed to be deeply moved.
One of my absolute favorite things to do is sing along in the car with my 23 year old son. Sometimes he shocks me with a song I didn’t think he’d know. He just gives me this look like, of course I know this, Ma. It’s awesome. I’m so glad Running Up that Hill is having a resurgence. It’s use in the show was perfection. I’ve had it stuck in my head for 2 weeks now.

She's the best ever, ever!
Took the eldest to see the chili's end of June and he frickin loved it 🤣
Happy she is getting the attention she deserves from this generation
But, now she doesn't have her trademark esoteric appeal.

Kate Bush almost didn't get the recognition she deserved back in the day. David Gilmour heard her demos and thought they were great and more or less told EMI they needed to sign her by using the influence he'd garnered for himself. Thank you, David Gilmour!
Dave Gilmour is a god.

I was 16 when Wuthering Heights came out and it was a revelation. I’ve been a fan of Kate ever since then. She’s a true artist.
Wuthering Heights is a banger
Fun fact. I think that she was as well. Or maybe she was 17.
Fantastic tune!
I think it came out before I was born, but remember it being on VH1 and it was absolutely captivating.
So powerful
@@Missjunebugfreak teary-eyed? I was bawling my eyes out hahaha
Every time I need a good cry, I put on "This womans work" by Kate Bush. she is a brilliant song writer, as well as a beautiful woman.
I can't listen to it. It gets me every time.
Moments of Pleasure gets me every time. So sad and beautiful at the same time ❤
That song just wrecks me. I sob like a baby when I listen to it. It’s my favorite Kate Bush song. ❤️
"The Kick Inside" is the one that gets me. Great artist!
exactly the same for me
The older I get (I'm 50 with 14 year old twin daughters) the less I care where anyone says they've heard or discovered something.
@@globalnova I think you may be trying to troll me (and Karl V for that matter), but it's a very subtle and cute attempt and I admire your efforts,
Love Kate Bush.
Really? Van Halen 1, The Cars, Led Zeppelin 1, Hybrid Theory, Appetite For Destruction and so many others that are leaps and bounds better

Yes its a great album, I bought "East side story" by Squeeze, "Foreigner 4" and "The kick inside" all within one month and they are the best albums I have ever heard in all of my 58yrs!, there are some that come close but those three are the best, yes we all have different ideas about music and we can't all like the same thing, how boring would that be! lol.

Breathing from Never for Ever for me! Never ever fails
Kate has always been ahead of everyone by a long way. By far the best female artist on the planet. Never EVER written a bad song. Gawd bless her.
That mic was invented FOR that tour, FOR Kate Bush to use. Another thing we have to thank her for.
She was great back in the day. Lovely to see her have this unexpected revival of her work.
Her voice is other-worldly....and unique.
Not just back in the day, her albums post 80s have also received critical acclaim it's just they're not heard on the radio.
Kate Bush deserves all the success and respect she gets and then 10X that! I've loved her forever!

Hey Justin, great video. I hope Cloudbusting makes an appearance in the nxt chapter. Some of the lyrics are quite apt for Elevens story with the hiding from the government / Daddy/ a threat to the men in power/here in my head references.
The B side to Running up that Hill is called Under the Ivy a wonderful piano ballad which is very apt for Stranger Things.

I remember off the back of Katie's amazing machines, playing I believe in a thing called love for the first time to my kids. Also in my class (I teach 5-6 year olds) playing Sir Duke for the first time. Now they know who Stevie Wonder is.
Kate’s one of those artists that no matter how much credit she gets it probably won't be enough. She deserves more
Cloudbusting is my favorite Kate Bush song.
I can't stop watching these, thanks Justin. Addictive.
Loooove Kate Bush! Hounds of Love is one of my all time favorite albums.
This channel has put me onto stuff I've never heard before, just like the kids getting into Kate Bush now. Cheers Justin!
? Queen played arenas. They were one of the biggest bands in rock
To see Kate Bush and the other goddess on the same stage. That would be musical heaven.
This is fantastic. Justin ranting is something I didn’t know I needed in my life, but here we are.
Your description of average had me in stitches. Thanks!
I hear a fair amount of Kate Bush inspired music on the charts these days, particularly her atmospheric touches, and her odd, repetitive chord changes. Billie Eilish springs instantly to mind.
It's great to hear you discuss Kate Bush, I've been a fan of hers for decades. As ever, your insights are interesting and intelligent.
Kate Bush being thrown back to the top of the charts might be the turning point in bringing back good music
The record companies might see the value
Im not holding my breath though
That’s the version I’ve always known lol
good luck at download, Justin! and good for Kate. i'm happy for her. i live in the States, and i've known about her for a very long time, but she just never caught on. i'm glad she's finally getting recognition here.
I realize the series wasn't a big, but this song was featured in a huge scene in the show GLOW (also on Netflix), too. It's how I discovered the tracks. The show wasn't UNpopular, though, but I guess it didn't saturate a big enough market to see any significant boost.
I would say a lot of the audience for GLOW already knew about Kate.
I watched the first season. It was pretty good really.
You’re awesome Justin. Your breakdowns are great !!
It’s always been a classic… Good for her that it’s getting a second coming
Oh THIS is why that song is everywhere. Thanks Justin
I don't understand how this doesn't happen more often, but organically, not because of a tv show or movie. A good song is a good song. Many are beyond good, into legendary, and many are timeless. Why don't THEY become hits again for a whole new generation of listeners?
Because there are so many of them. It takes something like this to make one rise above the rest for a little while
Simple. Todays generations are JELLY brained, over sensitive, over anxious , soulless drones who can’t last 5 minutes without their device.
You expect them to connect to a good song without the aid of a separate artistic machine to highlight the music?
They need images, they need high fevered opinions hyping up the images, they need HD , they need seperate storylines…
…they just need HELP 😆
Wuthering heights was the first song I ever remember being obsessed by. I would have been 5 when it came out and absolutely insisted I had my own copy of the single, even though my mum was buying one at the time. Love LOve LOVE Kate Bush.
A classic song. I'm glad current TV shows are exposing audiences to great music they might not otherwise hear.
Good day to you sir. Your perceptive pontification on the definition of the word "average" at 09:00 was both astute and concise. "Not quite shit enough to be shit... not quite good enough to be great". If it is not already, this should be on a T-shirt. Cheers.
Stranger things takes older songs and makes them popular again, breathes new life into them, and they all deserve it; Joy division, The Clash, Kate Bush and many more
And I think thats why music in movies and shows are important, they can really help artists

Man I find this channel entertaining! Superb music taste and knowledge followed by some hilarious points….it’s definitely not “average”!!
I hope this means she actually shows her face somewhere for a change, maybe, if possible, does an interview in person, just to remind everyone she's a "living" legend.
Funny you mention needing to be ready for Download as I'm watching this after seeing you guys there, great set and I was chuffed you played LIOAF, one of my personal favourite tracks ❤️
Im so happy to see people talking about Kate Bush again.
She may like Whitney Mower's band 'They / Live'. Check out 'circles' and 'foreigner' from album 'Ablation'. Tracks are featured on TH-cam. 🎶👌
@@Retrogamer71 I'll forward that info to her. Thanks for the heads up! 🤗😘
- Vyvyan! That's not, Kate Bush. That's, Neil and you know it!
- Kate Bush is underneath, Michael. I'm using, Neil as a contraceptive!
