It’s depressing that at least Gascoigne’s family gave him a music box since they loved him. On the other hand, Gehrman was all alone in the dream so this music box melody is like himself, left behind and forgotten, never to be made or given to since everyone who loved him were gone long ago
I havent played bloodborne yet, only watched a few lore videos and read some myself, but this makes me think of a line of his... "...I've not much use now, I'm afraid." Most of this is coming from my head since I don't know what hunters actually hunt for, but if I could give a semi-okay reason that isn't just an addiction to the blood, it'd be to protect something or someone. What does Gehrman have? The doll? It's a thing that constantly reminds him of his mistakes. The hunter? He's heralded the likes of you before; no different from sheep in his eyes. He has nothing. No one to love. He's not even one to love. Nothing to protect.
Man, this is beautifuly depressing, makes you feel how conflicted he and the hunter were, Gehrman trying to save you from his fate, and the hunter to free his mentor, and end his suffering once and for all
"What was it," you ask me? It was neither the Hunt, nor the Blood, nor the Dream. It was the Insight... the Insight that you've sacrificed yourself and suffered for so very, very long for the sake of everyone else... But I can take it, Old Hunter. I am still young compared to you. My heart and mind are unburdened compared to yours. And when the time comes and I, too, am driven to despair by this horrible, wonderful dream, I will look for a successor to take my place... But for now, I know we must dance. Because I know that even though you long for release, and even though I am willing to sacrifice myself for your sake, you cannot allow me to take your place and suffer your torment... So come, Old Hunter. I invite you to dance this last waltz with me... and then, sleep... sleep, unburdened by dreams and nightmares... free of torments, free of sins, free of sufferings, free of cretins, free of sorrows, and free of tomorrows, free like the sparrows, leaving their shadows...
There are so many scenarios I could think of this music box being used that I’m not even going to bother trying to write them down. This is true beauty man! Congratulations!
Just imagine how it would be to fight Gehrman with this theme. It would make sense with the theme of the Mergo's Wet Nurse, it would be sad and depressing but absolutely beautiful

Its funny because I can play both Gehrman's and Davy Jones' themes.
