- Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway are devoted to finishing the Gorge Trail. The nonprofit is holding the 14th annual Gorge Ride to fund the next steps to completion.
“There's also these amazing rocks that kind of look like a castle," board member Lidwina Rahman said at the Elipse viewpoint.
This spot is one of the projects Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway has made possible.
"So that we can go all the way from Portland, Troutdale to the Dalles."
Board president Jeanette Kloss said the old highway was "built by first looking for the beauty spots. And then figuring out how to take people to them. So it was designed to be a scenic route." In the 1920s, it was the first one in the nation.
The Gorge Ride highlights the eastern part of the Gorge from Mosier to the Hood River area. Highlights of the 38-mile round trip ride include the vista at Rowena Crest, the Mosier Twin Tunnels and rest stops at the historic Mayerdale Estate.
