Thanks for helping me realize how short life is. After managing an apartment building for 8.5 years, I realized that I only have so much energy to put into the things that I truly love. I decided to sell the building before I happen to deal with a tenant that won’t pay rent in Los Angeles, especially with the moratorium in place. I’ve been very blessed to have had good tenants, and also, to be able to sell when my property is worth triple for what I initially bought it. I realized that I didn’t wanna continue being a landlord when my passion is in teaching. I want to own a school. I will start with a family home daycare, meanwhile I build the school. Then I want to establish a school with integrity and good values for children- Christian values. Just the way Knott’s Berry Farm became a place that exists, Disneyland, Target, Taco Bell, etc.. I want my school to become a place that exists- a well established business that represents what I stand for, and the values I will be teaching and instilling in the next generation. Anyway, the point is that life is short and I can’t do everything I want to do, at once, but I have decided what’s important and what goals I want to tackle before I die, because tomorrow is not promised and I don’t want to regret “wasting” or spending too much of my valuable time, doing something just to gain a decent income, but not being satisfied with the meaning behind my actions. I want to do things with a purpose and passion, not just because it’s convenient for me. Thanks for reading! I hope you find your passion too and spend your precious time, wisely!
Every one of your summary videos is excellent and well done. No "underachievement" or "bare minimum" with you! From your notes: "Rather than excelling at everything, practice “strategic underachievement.” Identify all the low‐return activities you must do to uphold your responsibilities at home and work. Then look at each of those activities and ask yourself, "What is the absolute bare minimum I can do so I can make time for what matters most?" "
Yes this rings true. I used to overwhelm myself with too many resolutions every new year. Aiming to make my life super perfect. But there is not "perfect" life. So this year I set only 3 goals to achieve and that too which are 99% in my control and not dependent on others and external environment.
Love this. I've been preaching about '4000 weeks' every since I came across the concept about 10 years ago. But I've definitely been in the efficiency trap all that time, and often don't take time to savour my remaining weeks. This video is super powerful and practical, thanks so much for sharing! 🙏
wow, brilliant take on this book, I have to say I was doing "avoiding the efficiency traps" involuntarily, because I saw that doing the opposite got me stressed, people will always try to be judgemental and think you're weird and lazy, and they will want to convert you to "efficiency ethic", it's very hard to get away from the social pressure, but it's very satisfying when you succeed!
i heard about Oliver Burkeman this morning on a podcast - then this pops up in my utube feed - it is scary how well you have pigeon holed my whole mental structure - thank you change is inevitable
Wow! That was a much needed message. Productivity without reflection may not lead to happiness and a life of satisfaction. There’s a lot of chance that we may get trapped in the cycle of doing this and that; and be busy always. Thank you so much for sharing, This sounds like a balanced approach! I really appreciate it🙏😊
Here are my 10 extra tips to INCREASE your daily manifestations that I’ve learned over the years..👇🏾 1. Practice gratitude every morning. When you wake up, list everything that you are grateful for and feel that gratitude in your core. Feel free to write things down in a journal so it is easy for you to remember. 2. Replace your negative thoughts with positive ones. Every time you feel a negative thought coming on, make a positive spin on it right away. 3. Take ownership for things that happen in your life. It's easy to blame others however you will feel much better when you realize that most issues stem from us. 4. ALWAYS believe that good things are about to happen. By being open to new possibilities you are inviting abundance into your life. 5. Remember that like attracts like so you get back whatever you put out, whether it is good or bad. So do good AND received good. 6. Meditate for five minutes a day. During this time focus on how you want your life to be; but place your focus on how you feel AND feel that feeling as if you have already accomplished those goals. 7. Step outside of your comfort zone. Stop playing it safe and make that decision to finally go for your dreams. 8. Focus on activities that make you feel truly happy. When you are truly happy you have the best vibrational frequency to manifest your desires. 9. Avoid the naysayers and surround yourself with people who only lift you higher. Downers will be downers, don't let them drag you into their misery. 10. Don't be afraid to dream and know that you are always supported by the universe. Hope this helps! - Your Friendly Neighborhood Coach
Next time my GF nags me about sitting around the house doing nothing on the weekend I will clearly state that I am embracing strategic underachievement and will be doing so until the monday.
I assume you watched this video for self improvement, so why don’t you spend more energy on being a better person and less on complaining about your significant other.
Omg I finish the book and I think I should have just watch this and save a lot more time hahahahaha there’s too many unnecessary details that is interesting to know but not necessary to remember. I find that many non fiction self-help or philosophical books have many interesting thoughts, stories, facts and theories that I really like to take the time to read and remember so when people ask or when I come to share about it I’d know what I can share as examples but there’s often too many and at the end it’s really just a few simple things that they’re trying to say. I used to think that watching summary videos that I’d miss out on some important details, but I change my mind now. I watch this video after I finish the book and you put it all together so well within 10 minutes and it’s really all you really have to know to start conquering your life so yeah good job man thank you for reading, understanding and listing them out so clearly for us! ❤
Not with all books though, some are worth a read. However, with 4 thousand weeks an author goes in circles with similar stories. After a chapter you basically heard it all. I listened to audiobook and I feel like I wasted that precious time, this summary really covers it better lmao
Your videos are always so clear, concise, engaging and practical. This channel really enriches my life, and as a college professor and therapist, I am always giving tips from the books covering in your videos to my students and clients! Thank you for being so awesome at what you do! 🙏🏼
I would be interested to see a video about what are some of the most impactful things on your life that you've learnt over the years from all these books. I guess it would be the kind of stuff you've stuck with for the longest.
Whoosh! These are things I needed to hear. Thanks for the summary. I'll be getting the book. The Last Time Reflections hit me right in my middle age! #Real! Thanks!
You'll watch an entire Netflix show even when the first episodes are slow and boring just because someone told you "it gets better." *But what if you looked at your goals like that and watched your life get better instead?*
Be efficient at everything, learn to say no, and prioritize is better advice. Life is not that short; it's that we waste so much of it. We kill time as time is killing us. Carpe diem.
That open and close list looks like a good approach for multi-passionates like me, and it doesn't necessarily mean you can't do what' remains on the open list.
Really interesting ideas, and great work, I'm really in love with your channel! Can you also make a video about the new book of Jordan Peterson (12 new rules for life) please?
But... picking the items for the closed list and thus eliminating other options is EXACTLY what causes the overwhelm though, very few people actually believe they can do everything, it is prioritising that is the hard part. (hence why people with few options/freedoms in life, while suffering from other issues, generally do not suffer from existential dread/choice paralysis) This is just rephrasing the problem.
I agree and think that making the priority lists is at the heart of it. That's really hard work and not done quickly on the side. Then coming back to the list every so often and refining or reordering it, especially in the beginning. I haven't read the book, but I'd assume it gives some guidance and ideas on how to go about creating and maintaining the lists.
I think you missed the point COMPELTELY. You used 2 examples from the book the Burkeman criticizes. He doesn't use Buffett's as a blueprint, but as a way of thinking that feeds INTO existential overwhelm. The rocks in the jar example is explicitly mentioned as the WRONG approach. This isn't a book for maximizing time, or a recipe for figuring out what to spend your time on.
What about when you run out of rocks before you run out of jars? I was never one for anxiety. Never been my issue. I just lived. I did everything I felt I needed to do. I was still alive, so I did all the things I wanted to do. After that, I was left with "nice to haves" and after checking those off, well... I'm still here. Also, I totally disagree with "strategic inefficiency". That's called "half-assing your life". imho, I'd rather whole-ass my life. Each part.
Interesting. Did you gain skills as you went along doing you? Are those skills fulfilling you now? The main thing I got from this video is that existential overwhelm is whats holding me back (and it's true). I think it would be better to combat that by acknowledging that it exists and realise when it's happening, rather than changing my entire perspective to accommodate it.
@@ItsPBUH Some of my various "big rock" goals involved attaining specific skills so I built those skills along the way, typically as part of my education. Other "big rock" goals involved dedication to a task, but the task itself was easy for me, so 'dedication' was the real skill. Still others were easy and just needed to be fit into my schedule (e.g. travelling to specific locations). I don't really feel existential overwhelm. If anything, I feel existential UNDERwhelm.

Really, thank you.
The buddha used to break down a human life into years, seasons, days and nights, and lastly meals - only 72000 of them. That really shook me
This was an interesting book. I got it with the mindfulness workbook "30 Days to Overcome Procrastination" by Corin Devaso.

Be careful what you want to be efficient at
Does he say what to do when you accomplish everything? Your feel like you should be doing something, but you don’t know what.
Why not choose one thing? I think Warren Buffet did so himself :)
