    As I was watching the video I heard the birds in the background and it sounded like they were investigating and their calls were sounding like they were closer at times. Oh the love birds! Thank you for plugging along and leaving the knowledge of the birds being out til the end.

    Those ridges on the spines of hand bound books are integral to the function of the book, attaching the cover to the text block of stitched signatures. The cover you have appears to have “false cords” which became a style when they stopped using those methods to attach covers to books. Often they used a piece of cheesecloth or linen between the cover lining and glued to the spine of the text block to reinforce the opening and closing of the cover. It was a cheaper way to replace the linen bands or cords used for binding the text block with stitches.

      @@ThePaperOutpost you’re quite welcome! My mom (and myself through watching her and reading) have studied how books were made historically because we are both fascinated by book binding. I don’t remember all the terminology, but functionally, hand bound books were designed to last hundreds of years. For example, they used a starch glue, (basically wheat starch cooked in water till it is a gel) because that was ph neutral. Now, you can buy PH neutral pva, but the drawback is that you can’t re-wet and reposition anything with pva because it’s basically permanent. Some really old printed books were printed on large sheets, folded, bound, and then the last step was to cut the pages apart, which left that uneven deckle edge we so love. 💕

    • @jenndotson6718
      @jenndotson6718 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh! And the gilded tops on books were also functional for when they started shelving them upright. It reduces dust collection because the surface was smooth when the book was closed. Then they could be dusted. Who knew!

    I always get so much inspiration from your videos Pam! As I was watching you pick out papers for the signature, I had an idea l… use the 2 smaller papers, place them horizontally and stacked; so that the first paper is in front, and at the bottom of the signature and the second closest to the top. Then just add glue to the sides and bottom (where the pages meet/overlap) to turn the 2 pages into a pocket. I don’t k ow if that makes sense 🤔
    I am really enjoying the neutral journal follow along format. Thanks so much!
    PS- I LOVE Cracklin Oat Bran! Lol 😆 🤤
