Nice one! I do the same thing, but not as a pencil case but mostly as a key holders with pull up leather 1.4-1.8 mm thickness max. They comes flex and can hold any long keys.

And one question , are you use tokonole for back of the leather ?
I used mixed from seaweed glue(funori)and CMC(Carboxymethylcellulose), but Tokornole is also sometimes used.
