I wish that they had been told that real people write the songs, obviously there is real music. Sometimes the creator of the song cannot sing, or maybe the song is pretty personal to them. Sometimes the subject matter can be dark. Or, believe it or not, sometimes the appeal of a vocaloid voice is just there! Not everything can be captured by a "real singer", and vocaloids can go beyond human limitations. Songs that are practically unsingable have been achieved by Vocaloids, and that music as just as valid.
So you’re saying that the people who created vocaloid, turn voices into songs even tho it’s not actually a song?
Perfect example of an unsingable song that a Vocaloid sang: The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku. How could a human sing that?

I'm a baby boomer and I discovered Miku when she first came out. I confess I'm a kid at heart and I like this stuff.
I know this video is 7 years old but there’s one thing that’s always bothered me with it.
The why.
No one really explains to them why people actually like the music. Sure some people are like “haha anime dance”, but the majority of fans come for the music itself. Despite the music shown in the clips (another grievance I have with this video) the majority of vocaloid songs are incredibly sad and sometimes put to a happy tune anyway. Best example: Senbonzakura, a fun little pop song about the horrors of war. The fact that anyone can create music with this program means that anyone can post anything they feel. It’s especially important in Japan where therapy for mental health problems like depression is looked down upon. People express their pain or their takes on pain. Great example: Tokyo Teddybear. A little kid with depression that’s just being taken for them just being dramatic. No one takes the kid’s pain seriously so they run away and the song is their goodbye note. And this type of stuff would NEVER get published by actual producers. It’s too controversial. Project Diva, the company that makes the concerts, takes those controversial vocaloid songs and makes them hits. That’s why a lot of the fans are here. The raw emotion and inspiration. There’s your why.
PS I wish they’d shown some music videos because sometimes they really add to the story of the song especially with people like Hachi and Wowaka (RIP)
I would say it needed subs more, to understand the lyrics, then video. Because fan clip for, as an example, Ura Omote Lovers makes it's own assumptions about quite abstract song. And official video on niconico is one image. If video, I would say, most of Diva's PVs would be best suited for something like this.
These elders were more open minded than the kids at least, I’ll give them that.

I think that Vocaloids lead to the music being the main focus. There are so many instances in pop culture where the artist gets more attention than the art. That's why so many music artists make their music/ music video controversial or edgey. That's not the case with a Vocaloid because they are not a real living human.

I'd just like to say that Vocaloids actually do take talent to create and sound good. They are created by taking voice sample from *a living person*, and if those voice samples are low quality, the Vocaloid isn't very good, would have hiccups and such. That is probably a reason voicers are actually scouted by the companies, rather than a "make your own" kind of thing, like an Utau is. It also takes talent to input those notes into the program and get a nice sound from it, not to mention actually writing lyrics. It's nearly the same thing as a celebrity singing something that someone else wrote for them.

It's just like when you feel a connection to a character on a show or movie, even a book. I watched this a while ago, and since then have really been getting into anime, vocaloids, and all that other geeky japanese stuff. I decided to rewatch this video today and you do not know how many times I yelled "IT'S NOT A FREAKING CARTOON!!!!" at my monitor. Seriously though. Cartoon characters and anime characters are totally different.

I think that saying that you can't connect to a VOCALOID is not entirely true. The way that they have made VOCALOIDS is so that they have their own personality and their own likes and dislikes. This does give them a more human like aspect. Also, if you do know what they are saying in the song you can see that there is an actual story in the song rather than pop songs today don't always nessicarily have a story. So, in a way you can still connect to a VOCALOID either through its personality or the story it is telling through the song. Because I can tell you a a VOCALOID fan, so of those songs have very deep meaning in them.
