Half of the people commenting here have no idea of what Houdini is actually capable of. Just because its used mainly as a FX engine in most pipelines it doesn't mean that you cannot use it for modeling, rigging and animating. Without a single plugin.

"...use even blender instead of maya to do uvs because it was a better option" said no artist ever. I am a blender user and blender uv tools suck. Also comparing maya with houdini is like comparing apples with bricks... but ok. I am learning Houdini for game dev and once I do I will definitely switch from blender/maya to just Houdini. So yeah, people saying Houdini=VFX, probably have no idea of what Houdini is.

Without all the glossy expensive looking studios and gaming setups material with all the fancy 4K screens we usually tend to see in these videos? Most of us are clever and have our own stuff at home, but it'll never look like the stuff in these videos unless we had the budgets or space required, you know what i mean?! I'v tried for 5 years to be able to animate in Houdini as a replacement for maya, Houdini can't simply stand next to maya when it comes to animation. However the KineFX is way too good and I constantly think of ways to take advantage of it in character animation/deformation, perhaps post processing and adding procedural motion to the skeleton and the mesh after the animation is done in maya. I'll be all in houdini if SideFX introduces new workflows to make it easier & much faster dealing with the animation process! Cheers.

Blender is cool and everything but it feels fragile under the hood, if you look at all the stuff it has it really isn't good at anything, the only plus iit has, is that you can have all these features in one app for learning and practice and maybe few manageable projects, but for scalability then Blender fails...Maya is good for Riggers & Animators, Houdini is good for VFX, Zbrush is good for sculpting..etc
but Blender's position is very awkward, where would you use it if it can't perform well in any of those?.
That's why Concept Artists perfer it the most because they can just paintover their blockouts and not worry if it performs or not.

I could really see what shit Maya is and how its development was the speed of a glacier, and nothing but excuses from AD and fanbois for their 15yr old destructive bugs.

Excellent Breakdown between Maya and Houdini. Based on what I've read, if you want to work in the "Industry", your best bet is to learn both Maya and Houdini. That's what most of the companies ask for.
Since I run my own operation, Blender it is. I'm doing mostly product design, so Houdini and Maya is not needed. I'm not even using Windows or Mac OSX, so they're definitely not needed.
Other 3D Artists, yes, you'll need to learn both Maya and Houdini, become proficient at both, and you'll get hired.

Blender was my first software. I know how to use most of the current software including houdini and substance products nuke etc but basically blender is overall good for most things but has limitations on all of them. For modelling and uv mapping as well as basic sims blender is enough. But houdini is king of simulation if used to its full potential with VEX. I honestly think there is a higher possibility of sidefx implementing a good destructive workflow for modelling into houdini than there is of blender ever becoming as good as houdini now that being said blender has awesome plugins that facilitate a lot of stuff!

Maya will remain for a long long time especially for Rigging & Animation because Studios, Schools, Professionals..etc have developed skills and knowledge over decades of productions..Maya might lose some Artists positions like Modeling,Retopo,Uving..etc but it will remain a central hub for pipelines, Blender, C4D or even Houdini can't replace that especially that their focus is on somethings else.

@@z_tiger311 @fattyparis I Understand but I just think is silly to make such an assumption with so much certainty, particularly when talking about technology. Maya might be king now but their development has been quite slow and in this industry you never know. there are hungry ambitious underdogs out there who are viciously gaining interest. Look at all the young generation of kids learning 3D these days, they seem to be very much on board the Blender train as a lot of them find Maya to be extremely boring, some of them going as far as to call it "the old peoples tool"

    • @z_tiger311

Huge boost in performance in latest versions and soon MaterialX, USD/Hydra integration.........it's easy to look over these stuff but they're essential tools for projects since decades and i don't see any other Software even coming close to Maya's tools as a replacement not even other Tools from Autodesk, hence 90% of Animation & VFX projects are done in Maya...logically it would take another Software at least a decade to reach that level of polish not only that it has also to gain a huge amount of trust in the industry to be accepted as a replacement, otherwise no one is going to change their well established pipelines for some random tool with no capabilities in handling similar projects.
